MY TAMMY FAYE CLIENT

I have a sweeter than anything client who comes in for a facial every 3-4 months and about every 6 months comes in for a new makeup look/lesson.

It never fails that she has a full face of heavy, full coverage foundation, too dark blush/lips and the heaviest eye makeup, fake lashes, too. She insists on going back to this look even though she pays me for a more natural look since she's 67 and says she wants to wear less makeup. When I complete her more toned down look, she loves it, purchases the items I've used (I write them down for everyone to purchase wherever, don't sell products) and she buys them all, but comes back in every time with her same Tammy Faye look.

I'm so frustrated, but she's so sweet. Any suggestions what I can tell her?

My first thought was "quit wasting your money." But second thought was maybe she just enjoys your company and likes visiting and spending the time with you. I'd just let things continue as they are.

Well, I haven't heard that name in awhile, LOL!

Sorry for the difficult time you are having but I really don't know if you can change someone at this point in her life. We are creatures of habit and they can be difficult to break. Maybe just be honest and tell her she is overdoing it and taking away from her natural beauty?? You seem like a nice person and can say it gently.

Sounds like she enjoys the makeover and makeup.

She is getting value from your services and products

in her own way.
Unless she is mentally impaired, very poor let her enjoy

your skills and company.

Ask her if she would like to look older or younger, then proceed to ask her what she thinks might help to achieve her look.

Or, you can have your grouping of things ready, and after she washes everything off, allow her to apply under your direction.

Maybe one step at a time. Rather than a whole face of a more natural look, start with a more natural lipstick, next time add in natural blush, etc. I know for me that's how I had to do it when I stopped working and didn't need the full face. I *wanted* to go 100% more casual but it was hard to do all at once. lol. So bit by bit worked.

Otherwise, she just feels that is how she looks her best and really that's all that matters.

@Harpa Oh, I've gone that route with her many times. She walks in, sees MY makeup (I'm older than she is) and she admits my look i s younger than how she does her makeup and wants me to do her makeup like mine...(of course need to change up her shades to go with her complexion). She looks in the mirror afterwards and "LOVES" the new look.

She's just stuck in her other look and can't give it up. She may be lonely and just enjoys the hour of girl talk.

@Shanus Tell her you love her the way she is! Tell her she is very much an individual and has a look all her own. Is she a Dolly Parton fan (I am serious here!). If so, help her look more the way she likes--just some variation for fun.

Have her bring in pictures of people whose makeup she likes and talk about that. Maybe by more natural she really is thinking about "younger." You think? Better skin, firmer, etc.

Help her be the best of who she is, help her take care of her skin and feel special, and help her buy some new "toys" for her own special look!

At the heart of it, isn't makeup more about how someone feels than how they look?

@LindaSal I'm surprised you haven't heard it in a while since the film The Eyes Of Tammy Faye came out in Sept to a lot of publicity. Stars Jessica Chastain as TF, Andrew Gargfield (Spider Man!) as Jim B and Vincent D'Onofrio (Bobby Goren from Criminal Intent) as Jerry Falwell of all people!

@Sooner Such a sensitive and sensible reply. This seems like a good option. We'll see how it goes over when suggested. She was just in, so will be several more months. I may also gather photos from pinterest of celebrities about her age and coloring and see what she thinks.

@Shanus Tell her that heavy makeup makes women look old (it's really the truth). If a woman thinks she looks old, she will stop with the heavy makeup. Tammy was a real piece of work. I believe the mascara was her signature to hideous.

@Shanus One thing is sure, we never know what someone else considers beauty to be, and we never know what makes someone else happy! If she brings you photos, it may be different that what she expresses verbally.

@Shanus Change is difficult as we age. The brain relies more and more on long term memory. She may just be doing her TF look out of habit. I like the suggestion of changing one thing at a time. Ask her if she would like to come back next week for step 2 in her transition. Refresh her memory about the first change, then implement step 2. If she can afford to come in weekly, do step 3 the next week. Review the previous two changes. Treat this like piano lessons. Tell her you want her to practice the changes daily. Repetition is what she needs.

Baby steps will work best. Good luck. I have difficulty with change. I am older than you all. I let my hair go gray during the lockdown, and I do not like how I look with gray hair. I want my old color back, but I know this is more practical and requires no maintenance. She may really be trying but just can't give up her look in one big step.

And some of us march to a different drummer--which is what make us special! I think about all the people who have a trademark look, but it's them.

Especially little old ladies! How many have you known and loved who maybe wore a certain hair style, bright lipstick, painted on eyebrows, and maybe a certain color or lots of jewelry. And don't you think of that when you remember them?

Maybe not some of the LOUD perfume, LOL, but something unique to them.

I think @Shanus has a wonderful job being an angel to a lot of women! She is concerned with who they are and what they want to be, and helping them feel good about it!

@On It I learned that when a woman gets stuck in a look, it's usually from the best, happiest times in her life. It is very dificult to change.

BTW, I went silver from being a brunette all my life and didn't regognize myself for months. I tweaked the hairstyle and brightend my makeup and am happy with it now.

@Sooner Thanks, I think you get what I attempt to do. Sometimes, women that come in are just in need of a friend....or a bit of therapy. I do find many times, I'm doing a lot of listening to their problems.

She probably has friends or family that all wear the heavy overdone makeup. There's a lady in her 50-60's who is often on air to give her opinions who wears the black eye liner on her lower and upper lid. She looks like a racoon . Her makeup look is awlful . This same lady has plenty of $$$ money to pay for a makeup artist to spiff her up to go on air but her look is always the same racoon look.

Do you think it would help to say something to her like, "You know, when you do a completely new look like we've done today, it can take 2-3 weeks for your eye and your brain to get used to the new you. So, over the next 2-3 weeks don't change a thing. Give yourself time, get used to the new you, and see what happens."

My mother used to be this way about home decorating. Her house was way too cluttered, with something on every wall and surface. Every so often she'd discover a new interior decorator, have her come over and re-do her house. Most of the "junk" was put away, and the house looked so much better. Within a month, it was all back, piece by piece.
