I dilute my Philosophy shower gel to use as hand soap

For years I've been using Philosophy shower gel in smaller bottles at the sink. I just transfer it from the giant bottles with a funnel. Yesterday I realized we were going through it much faster than usual, due to the Covid rules. So today I refilled the bottles after diluting it 50% with water. We'll see how this goes. I had bought a few el cheapo liquid hand soaps from Walmart and DH complained it did nothing for the grease and garden dirt he gets on his hands. So we are sticking with Philosophy.

Cant help but question, if Phil is supposed to be so gentle for the body as they claim, what does this say about it that it removes grease and garden dirt ??? It still contains sulfates, which perhaps makes it not so gentle after all. Between the sulfates and the artificial dyes, I stopped buying it a few years ago.

When my hands get really dirty with dirt or greasy stuff I like to use FAST Orange Hand Cleaner. It's gentle, has pumice in it and smells nice. But for everyday hand soap I like Dawn Ultra Gentle dish soap...smells so good.

@depglass I have been diluting it for some time with water and using it in a foaming dispenser. I do not dilute it with half water somewhat less and it serves the purpose as handsoap. I use Amazing Grace because that's my favorite.

I have several of the small bottles of shower gel that I bought for Christmas presents a few years ago but didn't give them and I have so much of amazing grace, pure grace and many other large shower gels so the small ones just sat there. One night I was watching Shawn and heard her say she uses the small bottles as hand soap and I thought wow that's a great idea. So I have started diluting them with water and they are great hand soaps.

You can use any shower gel for hand soap, if there is one your not liking when used on your body.

I always keep the 16 oz. Philosphy Shower gels by my sink. I refill them from the 32 or 64 oz. bottles. Sometimes I'll mix scents if one of my larger bottles is almost empty. I'll transfer it to the smaller bottle by the sink.

I love my Philosophy shower gels and Shawn K is right...it really makes my diamonds & diamonique shine!

I've been using Neutrogena Rainbath in my kitchen and bathroom foaming soap dispensers for a couple years now. Our hands feel so soft and clean.

I'll have to try the Philosophy body wash when I refill and see if it will work in the foam pumps.

Based on my past experiences it wont work. I have tried other soaps in the foam pumps and the results were terrible, it just comes out like water. And vice versa.

What a timely post! Almost thru with 1 of those smaller Philosopy shower gels--actually just refilled my kitchen hand soap dispenser this morning. I dilute it with some purified water and shake the bottle like crazy. It's working great at my house, no complaints, & love the sent. I've found the small squeeze out bottles difficult to use for the bath. But the shower gels now have a fabulous new life in the kitchen!

It seems to me that even the supersize shower gels are more expensive than any other hand soaps. I agree that with the sulfates, etc., I wouldn't use it on my hands for the same reason I quit using it on my body years ago because it was so drying.

Washing hands so often, I've started quite awhile ago using the big Philosophy Shower gels with the pumps for hand wash. It smells so good and makes my hands feel good. I use Korres large ones, also. I look forward to as much as I wash my hands with these. I'm a big hand washer. My one Grandson really likes the Philosophy Caramel I have.

Malin & Goetz makes a RUM HAND & BODY WASH that I LOVE... I use bar soap in the shower so I use this strictly as a hand soap in several of my bathrooms. I don't dilute. It has a great texture and smells FABULOUS.

Do people dilute because it would be too thick not doing so?

I do the same with shampoos that I am sorry I bought for shampoo! Also use it to clean my bathroom sink. Does the job and milder on my hands than bathroom products!

Although I have been tempted, I follow this advice from a biochemist:

"You should never dilute a product — whether it’s soap, shampoo, conditioner, face wash, etc. — for two main reasons,” he tells us. “First off, you decrease the efficacy of the formula. The ingredients within that formula are very finely balanced: Think of it like baking a cake — you change that balance, you get a product that doesn’t work or behave like it’s supposed to.

“This second reason deals with safety,” he says. “Every formula is carefully preserved to protect the user until the product is done. By adding more water to the formula, you’re diluting the strength of those ingredients and adding the biggest culprit of bacterial growth — water — to a formula.”
