Ok, I am forever complaining about my challenging, coarse, wiry, dry, hair that I can never keep frizz-free in summer, no matter what I use or do (drawer full of hair products). So I went to a salon to get highlights, and she blow dried it, then flat ironed it using the typical technique they use (to my chagrin) as I thought it would frizz immediately leaving the salon.
How wrong I was !! What?? It has held frizz - free in 100% humidity for several days (wearing a shower cap)- I am freaking amazed!! So what do you think is the secret?? Was it the products? She used Goldwell and KMS. Was it technique?? Was it the salon blow dryer?

If you have difficult hair, what are your tips for blow drying and staying frizz-free?? I NEED to be able to replicate this- Thanks forum friends! 💝

The flat iron. There are products on the market you can use before flat ironing (and blow drying) to protect it from heat damage. But you still don't want to put it on the highest heat. And move it quckly down your hair, don't let it just sit on the same spot.

The products used probably contained a good deal of silicones. That would be my best guess.

I don't know if this will help, but here's a suggestion. I've always had straight as an arrow, shiny hair. In the last two years, my hair has developed a wave that drives me insane. I can blow dry my hair and it will be straight, but in five minutes, the wave starts moving in. Anyway, when I go to my hairdresser, she is able to do something that keeps my hair straight. Honestly, she uses just a tiny bit of product and then blows it out. So the last time I saw her, I told her my frustration when I do my own hair. She explained that since my hair is turning gray, the outer layers of the hair shafts have been stripped of color and as a result, tend to curl. She showed me what she uses on my hair - Noodle Head Beyond the Zone. Believe it or not, it's for curly hair, but it works to relax curls and waves and yes, it works. You can get it in beauty supply places or from online sellers.

I think it is mostly the technique. My hair is extremely frizzy in the summer months. Nothing, and I mean nothing I do gets rid of the frizz. When I get my hair blown out it is straight and will last until I wash it. The stylist just uses a blow dryer, no flat iron.

I may use a diffuser, or dry in the sun. In winter I just use the space heater that's on in the room anyhow.

My hair is below my shoulder blades, coarse on top, fine below, wirey, dry, and my curls have fragile kinks. After decades of uncontrollable frizzy broken hair, I'm now frizz free.

@Skyegirl21 As someone with wavy/slightly curly hair, I've tried many products and techniques. I've tried wearing itlong (way too much work) and went back to my life long pixie...keeps the waves/curls in check.

Products used include sulfate free s&c...very drying. Deep conditioner twice a week helps a lot. According to my stylist and my own experience, frizz is caused by dry hair that will suck up any moisture in the air to repair itself. If you coat it w/ silicone, conditioners can't get in the hair shaft. Sulfate shampoo is needed to remove the silicones and sulfates further dry out your hair.

I always use a heat protectant before applying mousse. I have found good blow-dry products by Bumble Bumble and my latest is Kenra Perfect Blow Out. If they have silicones, I only use them occasionally when I want a smooth look for going out special. It's not an every day thing because I know it will further dry out my hair.

***My hair is grey/silver/white. Some women who have grey hair do experience some wiry, dry hair. If you color your hair, but have grey hair underneath, those hairs are still a different texture. If I do use an iron, I keep the temp at 325 to keep from burning, damaging my hair.

But seriously now, are you unaware of the causes? High humidity is only one. Straight A-1 type hair can be frizzy. And porous vs non-porus is a separate issue.

@ , Haha lot of people only wash their only once a week, some even less, If you had super dry hair, you might understand that it's not harmful or unclean at all.

@Skyegirl21 , most people here wash their hair because it's oily/dirty, and gets greasier with every passing day. Given enough time between washes, it tends to gather in stringy clumps when really dirty.

Do you wash your hair not because it gets greasy, but gets drier and more crispy as each day passes, and washing temporarily restores some moisture, softness, and control? Instead of a stringy gathering together, does it seem each hair is trying to get as far away as possible from every other hair between washes?

@Skyegirl21 oh the frizzees - yes, I have them. For many years I received a Keratin treatment which lasted about 4 months.

Then, I found products that work well in the very humid area I live. First, do not use a regular towel to dry your hair. Either use a microfiber towel or do as I do by using a very old cotton t-shirt and "plopping" it on my head to take the excess water out.

I apply product to my hair and let it air dry. I found the blow dryer makes things worse. The flat iron is ok but my hair is also wavy/curly so it takes a hot iron to get it really straight.

Good Luck.

@Skyegirl21 wrote:

@Skyegirl21 You need to call her ASAP and get the secret and post it here right away! LOL

I have crazy frizzy wild hair that grows like a chia pet once I step outside no matter what I use or do. Sure they beat it down at the salon but in humid weather it goes into a fuzz ball on my head.

Perhaps the flat ironing does the trick for your hair? Mine wouldn't hold with that if humidty/dew point high enough.
