I was perusing some hair products on Amazon and discovered a brand that actually used the term Ojon Oil in it's description which sorta surprised me. So, I had to read a little more. Since EL divested themselves of the Ojon line of products, the name can now be used by anyone. Ojon Oil is not the real name of the ingredient anyways. It's a type of palm oil (Elaeis Oleifera Kernel Oil) or Batana Oil.

The brand (T'Zikal) has a web site that you can order from directly. Products are rather pricey. They have a small wavy hair collection which is meant to last a month for $60, full sized would cost $104. The small size shampoo by itself is $10 for 2.5 oz.

One of the Amazon reviewers claimed that it was a good replacement for the original and even smelled similar which can be good or bad. I looked at the ingredient list and no silicones, which is a plus for me, and a lot of botanicals. There are 3 proteins in it which for some is good, others bad. I noticed on the hydrating shampoo, the Ojon Oil ingredient is the last ingredient, so it's really not doing much in that product. However, it's the 3rd ingredient in the conditioner.

Another note from the comments, the shampoo is rather thin which apparently makes it come out of the small tube rather quickly.

I'm adding it to my wish list for now and may try these products in the future after I pay off some bills. I never used the original Ojon but I did like the Ojon Tawaka conditioner, so I am familiar with the perfumy/musty fragrance

I LOVED OJON----used that brown paste stuff on my head as the hair was re growing from chemo--and there was a spray leave in conditioner that was the best thing ever. Felt like it really babied my poor bald head and new baby hair. I miss it!!!

That word is derived from Spanish (Creole) and it means 'big eyes'. I would imagine b/c the nuts from the tree look sort of like eyes when they are cut open....LOL!

Denis did not make up that word 'ojon'. He just had the word trade named to use as the name of his company.

I LOVED Ojon and I too still have my original Ojon restorative hair mask. I use it very sparingly on my ends on wash day and it never disappoints. I was sad to see this brand disappear. EL ruined it when they changed the formula up. I wonder where the Tawira people and their preserve are now!

You know that little jar he used to hold up. It's called Batana Oil. Maybe that tribe is still making it. Denis has a product that is close to the original Ojon in his line, so he may still be getting ingredients from that tribe.

His Tawaka line is a different story. That particular cacao came from the Tawahka tribe in Honduras. Besides the drug trade taking over, the groves that grew the palm used in Tawaka were destroyed by hurricane Mitch.

Whether they have een able to resurrect the groves or not I don't know, but I think it was already too late with the sale to EL. I loved Tawaka.
