Apple Cider Rinse for Hair

I found this short article interesting regarding an apple cider rinse.

Science supports the use of apple cider vinegar as a hair rinse. It could help strengthen hair and improve luster by lowering hair and scalp pH. It may also keep pesky scalp infections and itchiness at bay. However, it shouldn’t be relied on to reduce inflammation or solve diseases or issues of the scalp, like dandruff .

It also has vitamins in it so next time you reach for the creamy conditioner toss it aside and grab that apple cider vinegar and mix with water. I actually used it today and it is helping. I sometimes have an itchy scalp (not dandruff) but probably somewhat dry or buildup so I am going to rinse with apple cider vinegar and water for a few weeks and then every 2 weeks or so.

Apple cider vinegar is so smelly!.... I can't imagine putting it on my hair no Matter how good it might be. That stuff is foul!

Tried that when I was a teen back in the 70's. I think I read about it in Glamour or Mademoiselle magazine where I got ALL my beauty information.

I used it for awhile but didn't notice much difference. Also it was cold and so I mixed it with warm water and that helped. I guess I lost interest cause if I don't see a difference I don't want to go to the trouble.

I'm willing to try anything once (though I tired it a lot!) but am pretty impatient with side effects from herbal, rx etc esp. if no help with the original problem and or creating new problems that weren't there to begin with! (a little ot sorry).

I like to use acv once in while. It helps get rid of build-up and makes the hair cuticle smooth by removing minerals or products stuck between the cuticle scales so it lays flat.

I think that is probably true and makes me want to try it again. It probably is a good rinse out product.

@Goldengate8361 It's funny that you said that (smelly). A few years ago I was invited to a barbeque. My friend told me my hair smelled good. I used an apple cider rinse that day. I don't smell it on myself but obviously when mixed with the water and poured on the head in turns into magic. lol

I think vinegar is like cilantro. We either hate them or love them.

I love the smell of vinegar and use it for cleaning everything and a mouthwash! My kids hate the smell.

I hate anything with cilantro in it or the taste of garlic. Cilantro tastes like soap to me. My kids like cilantro.

That's what they say cilantro tastes like for others that don't like it.

@Goldengate8361 And, if you live in a humid climate, you end up smelling like a SALAD........

Yes, I use white vinegar to clean and I like the smell of apple cider vinegar. Cilantro tastes exactly lke soap to me. I always ask now if a dish contains cilantro. It's a common seasoning now.

I rinsed with apple cider vinegar and water when I was in my teens. I also used stale beer (and hair curlers) to try and give my fine straight hair some body. (Probably a Cosmo or Mademoiselle recommendation too). Supposedly, the beer smell disappeared. I was in college at the time so most likely no one noticed.....

An apple cider vinegar rinse should make your shinier. However it's not the same a using a clarifying shampoo, it's not strong enough to remove silicone buildup. And while they say it won't strip color treated hair, I'm personally not 100% sure of that.

@candyagain I also hate the taste and smell of cilantro.. it smells like cat pee to me. It is a genetic thing.. when I did my DNA test for genetics it said that I most likely would not like cilantro.

@decaf The "Curly Hair Community" swears by it to remove silicones before beginning the CGM and if you use any "wrong" products while trying to let your hair go to its natural curly state.

I personally used Neutrogena Clarifying shampoo. It smells great, to me. It's easier to use, too. When I did it years ago, my hair was shiny and manageable just as they described the vinegar would be. Even with my short hair now, that I don't wear curly, I use Neurogena to clarify once a month.

The only vitamins that will improve your hair are those you take by mouth. Putting vitamins on your hair is too late. It would be like putting vitamins on your nails.

@SeaMaiden I have never heard of the cilantro gene. I just learned something new from you (again ). I hate cilantro (must have the gene, too). Do you like the smell of patchoulli? (hate) Do you like basil? (a little goes a long way) One last question: can you smell skunk? (never have) I wonder if these are tied to a gene.....? LOL

I have an article from Bobbi Brown's "Just Bobbi DIY Beauty Treatments", where she states "to bring your hair back to health, rinse with one cup of apple cider vinegar after shampooing. Rinse with water, then condition as usual. Do this when you feel your haif looking dull, then repeat once a month.

@tends2dogs do not like patchoulli... HATE patchoulli actually........ Basil... is just OK... yes I can smell skunk for miles...
