Question: Glycolic Cleanser

I recently purchased and received a Glycolic cleanser by Insta Natural. I am going to wash my face momentarily. Do I need to still use a separate exfoliator once a week? My facial skin is slightly sensitive and when I use an exfoliator it is only once a week. I don't know if a separate exfoliator is needed with this Glycolic cleanser. Help!!

I wouldn't start out with using 2 exfoliators at a time. Wait and see what the glycolic does.

I use 10% glycolic.....and it does a good job.....but I do NOT have sensitive skin.

Oh.....and glycolic does cause a skin purge at first.......

GA cleansers give the least amount of exfoliation and if your skin doesn't need much exfoliating then that cleanser might be all you need. But if you still have some flakes and/or dry patches hanging around then you might consider using a leave-on treatment with a higher concentration of GA. A concentration of 10% for treatment products is a good place to start. If you have sensitive skin then go for 5%. Daily use of the treatment products is not necessary and you can use them according to how your skin reacts to it.

Some people experience some initial dryness and flaking when they start using GA products. That's just a temporary thing and it's a sign that your skin is renewing itself. Then after your skin begins cell turnover, you should start seeing clearer and smoother skin. GA gives us our glow back!

@SilleeMee I assume that this cleanser replaces my normal cleanser but I am concerned about using everyday (I don't want it to dry my skin out). I really know very little about glycolic acid. Thank you for your info.

GA is actually moisturizing, meaning it attracts moisture. However, in the beginning of using it there might be a temporary drying effect because the GA is exfoliating the top layer of dead skin. Continued use should yield less and less of the dry phase then your skin will get smoother. GA is an ingredient which takes time to work and there will be a 'break-in' period which will pass.

Cell turnover time takes 27 days. By that time you should know if you can continue using GA. Some people cannot tolerate it at all. But that is not common.

It ships free from their website. Takes about a week to get here. The company is in Florida.

@SilleeMee Thank you. I washed my face and when I rinsed and looked in the mirror I saw a cleaner, brighter skin. I thought I was seeing things. I then used a mild toner and moisturizer. My skin does feel soft from the moisturizer and smooth from the glycolic cleanser. On another note, I misjudged you and I want to apologize.

I have no idea what you mean by 'misjudged'. I've always enjoyed your company here and I've never had any reason to do otherwise. @SilleeMee My skin isn't (or at least thought it wasn't) sensitive. When I started using GA, I needed to discontinue my Retin A and Vit.C serum for a few weeks and then work it back into my routine. You do need to consider other skincare products and if they also exfoliate. Depending on your skin, you may need to make some temporary adjustments.

What other exfoliator were you using? As an esthetician, I'm not a big fan of using cleansers wih active ingredients, such as glycolic acid. I much prefer to use them in toner or serum form. I recommend gentle cleansers and moisturizers with all of the corrective power being in the middle of your routine.

@ekat My other exfoliator is by alba Botanica Hawaiin collection and it is mild. I would maybe use that once every 2 weeks if I don't have results with the glycolic cleanser. Funny, I sent an email to the Insta Natural and they would not disclose the percentage of glycolic acid in the cleanser but said they rather consider it as a whole. I thought was strange and I am sending another email. My skin is on the sensitive side but not overly sensitive and this cleanser does not bother me at all. Immediately after I rinse I use a toner and moisturizer.

I don’t really consider a glycolic cleanser to be very effective as the only method of exfoliating. IMO, a cleanser isn’t on your face long enough to do anything significant. I rely on a glycolic & salicylic pad or a gentle physical exfoliating scrub or occasional mask for that. Still, I like using a glycolic cleanser in the morning. I stumbled on a Signature Club A duo on HSN last week and figured I’d give it a whirl. Admittedly, I failed to check ingredients and only went by the reviews. There aren’t many but they’re positive. We’ll see.
