Ok - what else can 2020 bring? LOL

So, I have hair about to the top of my bra line, I'm knocking at 50 and so far have no gray hair (yet) so the texture of my hair hasn't changed much and I do not color at all (never have)

But, the back of my head is getting so curly, especially up the back, seriously it's so wavy/curly that it looks like the back of my hair is uneven because it's pulling it UP where it curls LOL. The sides are still fairly straight (I have always had STICK STRAIGHT HAIR so this is crazy) and the hair laying over it is straight so bascially it's just super curly (tight waves) in the back of my head, if it was like that all over I would be in heaven but, it's not.

My dad has naturally curly hair and so did his mother.

So, has this happened to others? Do you think the rest of it will eventually become curly? Is there any products I can "try" to see if I can get the wavy curl around the rest of my head? Maybe try a diffuser? Maybe the rest is straight since I stretch that hair more as I blow dry it straight and obviously don't use the same tension in the back.

Sorry for the ramble but, I just got done taking my shower and blow drying my hair for the night and I'm just amazing......blame it on the crazy hormones I guess.

I definitely have noticed a difference since menopause. Always had fine, almost perfectly straight hair for most of my life. Last few years noticed that if it was rainy/misty outside that my hair got wavy/frizzy. Always used a blow dryer and sometimes a large curling iron on my hair until a few months into the pandemic.

I let my hair air dry one day and realized that my hair was a lot wavier than I had ever seen before. For the last few months I have given up all heat tools and have been trying to encourage my natural curl. It's been interesting. I've done a lot of research on wavy/curly hair and have tried a lot of different products. Some days I love how my hair looks and other days not so much. I think it's harder if your hair is fine because it's harder to get the right curl clumps. You want your curls to clump together somewhat but you have to be careful that your scalp doesn't show through. It's also harder to "scrunch out the crunch" with fine hair.

One thing I like is that I can go longer between washes. On 2nd or 3rd day hair all I have to do is mist it and then scrunch and my curl products re-activate. My biggest problem is getting enough lift at the roots while getting the right amount of curl definition.

If you're interested in trying to encourage your curls, there are a ton of good YouTube videos. There are also a ton of products for wavy/curly hair. You should definitely use a diffuser if you want to blow dry. Also, using products on really wet hair helps as does using a cotton t-shirt or towel instead of a regular one. Don't worry if you use a product and your hair is crunchy when it dries. That's what you want as it helps with frizz and curl definition. You can scrunch it out when your hair is 100% dry and fluff the roots.

As far as products, it depends on the thickness/density of your hair and your wave/curl pattern. There are charts online that show your curl pattern (2a-4c). Once you determine that, use it along with your thickness/density to get recommendations of products. Because my hair is fine, I do better with a foam and then a light gel. If your hair is thicker, you might do better with a cream/custard and then a gel.

Also your porosity is important, helps determine if you need more protein or moisture. It's rather overwhelming and there's a lot of trial and error, but it's rather fun. As someone who always had such straight hair I'm really enjoying having a lot of wave in my hair. If I still had to go into the office every day I probably wouldn't be able to spend the amount of time I do trying different things. One of the only positive things of being stuck at home is that if I try something and it looks awful it's not a big deal, I just try something else the next time.

Good luck! Definitely check YouTube/Google for info. There's a TON of stuff out there on curly/wavy hair.

Yes, but I don't blame menopause. I just thought it was 'age' in general. Mine has gotten curly around the edges, like the nape of the neck, the back, and over the ears. I like it, but do wish it was curly all over. It's funny that our hair gets curly in certain places, isn't it? Like @Sooner, my hair was always stick straight, fine and oily, but thick on my head. Thank goodness it's still thick! And even tho my hair has turned silver gray, it still has lots of body and shine. I wonder how long that will last?

My hair got straighter, less coarse and darker in color...it was dark brown before and now it's practically black and never any gray. It won't hold a curl like it use to either. I gave up trying. I'm 65.

After menopause, the back underlayers of my hair went very, very wavy--almost curly. While all the top is still stick straight. Good grief. lol

I grew up with stick straight hair. Started perming in high school, in college wanted straight hair and started blowing out the perm straight. Fast forward to late twenties and it was permanently curly, wavy. Fast forward to 49, my hair is curlier than ever but I don't like it. It's not a pretty curl, think a bad perm from the 80's. Also the curl is uneven. Much more tightly curly in the back, and a part of the front can barely be made to look like it matches. I tried a million products to enhance the curls but nothing produces a result I find attractive, so I just keep blowing it out. I wish I had naturally straight hair!
