How to solve dandruff problem?

Hi everyone!

My name is Hanna. I am facing dandruff problem since past 2 years. I have used a number of shampoos to solve this problem but the result is zero. Even a lot of serums used, but I am not getting desired results.

I have dandruff even in the summer season.

I am fed up of this problem. Please suggest the best solution, any product for this problem.

Welcome to the forum! My husband has serious dandruff problems. He uses Head and Shoulders Shampoo and Conitioner. And he uses a copper hair brush (Goody Clean Radiance Paddle Brush). And it seems to help with his dandruff problem. Good luck to you in your search for a solution!

If I had tried the over-the-counter shampoos with no effect, I would see your doctor or a dermatologist. You may need something prescription strength to clear up the problem.

If that was my situation then I would go to a derm. Two years is a long time.

There are a couple of things you can try...

- tea tree shampoos (I like Giovanni Triple Treat shampoo, has tea tree oil in it)

- apple cider vinegar rinse (leave it on for 2-5 minutes then rinse out w/water)

Don't use dandruff shampoos with BHAs (salicylic acid). Those may temporarily solve your problem but they can exacerbate the issue and cause even more flaking/dryness later on.

@hannafoster Hi and welcome. About 7 years ago I had a terrible problem with scalp flaking and itching. At first I tried all the OTC products, Head & Shoulders, coal tar shampoo, noxeral, etc. some worked for a short time and then didn't.

I went to two different dermatologists. The first prescribed a shampoo and lotion. Again didn't work as I had hoped. The second prescribed a different shampoo. That works!

However, years ago, someone one the board recommended Dawn dish detergent, the original blue one. That worked! I continued to use it as a first wash followed by the prescription shampoo. Followed by a conditioner, only on the hair below the scalp.

My hair is waist length and curly. I have continued to use the Dawn once a week. Now that my scalp issues are good, I use other regular shampoos.

I should add that my problems occurred after using Wen, which of course I do not use anymore.

Good luck with your issues. Try the Dawn. It's inexpensive and you can always use it to wash dishes or delicates.

timely question. i was reading about aloe vera today and it said it was good for dandruff. tear off the leaf and rub the gel directly onto your scalp. leave for an hour then shampoo. it has other hair benefits too, but for dandruff was one of them. it's very inexpensive and grows so fast.

Many years ago a friend of mine solved this problem with, I think, Neutrogena T-Gel or something like that.

Mix tea tree oil with carrier oil so you can massage on your scalp. Leave it 15-20 mins before rinsing. Use a tea tree oil shampoo & conditioner. You can add 10 drops tea tree oil to an 8 oz bottle of shampoo if you have a favorite.

I would have a doctor look at your scalp. It may just be dandruff or it may be due to scalp psoriasis.

I had the problem for over a year, but I went to a good dermatologist. She recommended to use several OTC medicated shampoos on a rotating basis (each day use a different one and leave on for two or three minutes before rinsing)--one blue shampoo like Zincon (or Selsun Blue),one tar shampoo with at least 5% tar like Psoria (from Amazon), T-Sal from Neutrogena because it contains 3% Salicylic Acid, and Nyzoral because some dandruff may have a fungal component. But . . . .that was me and not you, so see a dermatologist to get what is correct for you.

@hannafoster I would definitely use a scalp scrub and then a anti build up shampoo. I would also Google "dandruff" to see what home remedies are suggested. If that does not work, you need to see Dermatologist. Good luck. I had a problem with dry scalp but I cut down my shampooing to twice a week and I use a scalp scrub every 2 weeks.

May I add that I read that you should wash your hair everyday. Apparently, it is the oils from the scalp causing your dandruff. Also, I read that Aveda has an excellent product for dandruff -- check it out and read the reviews.

I also had a Dermatologist tell me many years ago that dandruff can be caused by a fungus, as well.

I was using the prescription-strength Nizoral shampoo. You can now get an over-the-counter version, which is what I use.

It was also recommended to me that I also do the same as you--try the different over-the-counter dandruff shampoos.

I can't tolerate anything with menthol in it on my scalp. I believe that some have menthol in them, as an ingredient.

However, I didn't mind the Neutrogena T-Gel shampoo.

Actually I used Head and Shoulders Shampoo. But that shampoo didn't suit to my hair and I got itching due to that shampoo.

I thought, my body could be allergic of this shampoo so I immediately stopped using the shampoo.

I think this could be a better option. Since past 2 years I have visited 4 doctors and all of them have suggested home made remedies. They simply say that this dandruff problem is not that which can be controlled by using any chemicals to your hair. These chemicals can reduce dandruff problem but cannot eliminate the problme permanently.

I would definitely try using these items.

Actually I visited a dermatologist and he said the same that using shampoos can solve the problem temporarily but cannot eliminate it. Also, those hard chemical shampoos can generate some other permament issues as well which whould be worse than this dandruff problem.

Dandruff problem is a big issue mainly in the winter season. I have been asked by a number of my customers regarding their dandruff problem.

This is due to the dry scalps of your hair.

So how to solve this problem?

Home remedies are the best solution for this problem. Home made products like using curd with oil or using onion water for your hair.
