OK, I almost hate to admit this, but my complexion looks so smooth and glowy lately. Is it because I haven't worn any makeup since late February? Was it wearing a foundation daily that caused skin problems? I haven't made any other changes in my skin routine.

Is there anyone else who stopped wearing foundation during this time of wearing masks and then noticed an improvement in their complexion?

It's the foundation you are wearing. Some of these make-up lines are awful. Also with the application your brushes, tools, ect. need to be cleaned weekly. Many women also apply to much, do no clean their face properly and wear it to long.

All make-up and skin care routines are not =.

The skin does need a breather on occasion.

For me —. That’s a combination of a cleaning regime plus food, exercise, and way less time away from fluorescent lights

Proper diet, supplements, and water intake are key parts of skincare in addition to a consistent topical skincare routine. I do those things in addition to not wearing makeup everyday and I am pleased with how my complexion looks.

BTW, skin doesn’t breathe.

I stopped wearing foundation decades ago because I didn't like the way my skin felt when I wore it. Other than the occasional breakout, my skin's been clear since my twenties. I stopped wearing makeup on a daily basis the day after I retired. Nowadays, I'll put a little lipstick on for lunch with my friends. I reserve my version of a full face of makeup for special occasions.

I wear a cotton mask whenever I'm in a store or in close quarters outdoors. Even though my mask is cotton, the area of my face that it covers is always sweaty when I remove it. I think if I had been wearing foundation under my mask, my skin would have broken out.

I have oily acne prone skin still at age 57 . I have stopped wearing foundation sometime ago . I started following Dr Dray the young dermatalogist on Youtube . She has several videos for acne and rosacea skin as well as other conditions . One of her top tips for acne prone skin is to try and skip makeup(FOUNDATION) and especially blush ( many of the coloring agents irritate acne ) Naturally I still have skin issues(large pores old acne marks ) , but my skin is more even tone and not as irritated and red ,which has always been a HUGE issue for me . As stated in other posts nutrition , exercise also play a big part in skin health as well as proper sleep . Have a great day ladies .

I'm still going to work every day, so still wearing makeup...BUT, I went back to mineral foundation this spring (Meow Cosmetics) and have noticed my skin is much improved! I'm 65, so I have "stuff"--some fine lines, broken caps, a few light brown spots--but overall the clarity, tone and texture is better.

IMHO, it's not so much the foundation or other makeup, but the way you remove/cleanse your face. Many thicker foundations, especially those with a built-in spf, are difficult to remove without an oil cleanser and then a second cleanse.

Yes, masks can cause issues if foundation or heavy moisturizers are worn underneath them.

Even without foundations, but wearing masks occasionally, I've changed to a lighter moisturizer, a gel formula spf and am careful to cleanse twice and use a toner that's non-alcohol to be sure pores are clean. Once a week, I'm using a deep, pore cleansing masque and a hydrating masque afterwards. My skin is dry, but I still want to be sure pores are clean.

At night, I've changed to a richer moisturizer and temporarily spaced out my Retin A to only twice a week.

***Stress and lack of sleep along with my gym still closed, which means alternate exercise that's not as intense, was definitely showing up on my skin. I needed to step up all these things. I agree with those that said good skin comes from the inside and outside.

I haven’t worn makeup daily since I retired in 2017. I only wear it when going out somewhere and that has been rare in 2020. Not wearing it hasn’t made any difference in my skin.

I'm retired, that & the virus has kept me from wanting to wear foundation daily.

And I've found my skin to be in better condition.

Could be partly due to paying more attention to cleansing & moisturizing.

In other words, I'm doing my skin care routine, cleansing, exfoliating, etc, more regularly.

As others have said, skin cannot breathe, thank goodness. :-)

Plus as we age it aids in mobility. It's a misnomer to think that excess weight should be allowed as we age. We all don't quite weight what we did in our younger years, but obesity just opens the door to many serious conditons.

@Tricolor AMEN to that. Since losing all my weight, not only do I feel great but I look a lot younger too!. I've lost 104 lbs. in the past 14 months. Getting back to my wedding weight is within view!
