Lipstick obsolete??

I haven't been wearing makeup or lipstick around the house. When I do go out, I wear a big mask. I certainly don't wear lipstick with a mask. (I don't even wear eye makeup with a mask any more. Why bother?)

I realized yesterday that I haven't worn any lipstick at all since early February. Hmmm..... My lipsticks are wasting away sitting in my makeup drawer. Are any of you still buying and wearing lipstick?

When (if?) this whole virus thing is all over, I'll throw away all the makeup I have and buy all new.

I always wear lipstick, from soft nudes to reds, even at home, but not under a mask. I forgot once and ended up looking ridiculous when I took the mask off once I was back home, what a mess.

I look like "me" with lipstick! Makes me feel mentally better and I am enjoying using up or trying older ones and reducing my inventory.....then when stores open, I have promised myself one lovely new lipstick to celebrate.

I apply makeup every day --- not a full face but enough to make me feel human in these trying times.

Not a lipstick wearer but I do apply my tinted Beekman chapstick. I do put a tad sometimes of mascara when I go out. As a retired dental assistant, I wore masks and gloves my entire career. I got more compliments on my pretty eyes back then. I feel the mask accentuates the eyes because you are forced to look at them now! I know, silly but I just thought I would throw it out there. Trying to have a more light hearted day today

I put makeup on every day and do my hair everyday. I am working still but I even do this on the weekend. No need to get sloppy just because I can't go anywhere on the weekend. I am one of those girls who never leaves the house without lipstick. I would go to the gym at 5:00 am and always put on lipstick. I think it's polite to care what you look like to others. I just got six new lipsticks yesterday...5 of them are in a set of glosses from Anastasia that I am loving, all nude shade, one regular lipstick in WoodRose from Anastasia.

I do not think lipstick is obsolete. I do think, though, that it's time I used a few minutes of my home isolation to discard all the glosses I pass up every time I look for a bit of lip color.

I'm keeping a few oldies. I feel safer wearing those than going out to shop - and almost everything I have to discard was something I bought online. Either I'm not good at that or it's just not true that "everyone can wear this color" as we hear or see over and over again

@millieshops it's just not true that "everyone can wear this color". Also, whenever they're selling a trio of lipsticks that everone can wear, usually there is only ONE of the three I can actually wear.

@tototwo Are you concerned whether the makeup's still good? I'd think mascara worn in Feb., maybe should be tossed. I did. Eyeliners and lip pencils can be sharpened. Lipsticks should be fine. I just washed mu brushes yesterday since they were collecting dust, unused, in their glass mugs.

@Icegoddess Also colors on TV or on the computers are not accurate. I've ordered a medium pink gloss or lipstick online or it arrives a dark fushia.

@LindaSal I get it since DD is a hygienist...mask, too. She does full eye makeup for work. She said the patients are looking up into her eyes during their appt. That's all that shows besides her ponytail.

I have been wearing lipcolor or gloss, or even tinted lip balm at home. When I go out and wear the mask I dont wear any or makeup at all. This is saving me a lot of makeup! But I look a little better with my pale face, if I add some color to my lips at home. Taking care of my skin and its getting a long breather from makeup!

I think lipstick won't be the only thing that will be obsolete or changed if we have to wear masks until there's a vaccine. I can't imagine wearing a mask over most foundations and how messy that will be. And I'm also thinking about all the young women on Instagram who currently use foundation to make themselves 4 shades darker than they are. That's not going to work well with a face mask rubbing against it.

You mentioned not wearing eye makeup, but I wonder if eye makeup is going to get more dramatic because it will be the only thing people can see. Or maybe people will go with less eye makeup and choose brightly colored or detailed masks instead.

@Shanus the lighting in stores can even throw me off. I recently picked up a gloss at ulta and in the store it looked fine. As soon as I took it out of the bag in my bathroom I knew it had too much orange/coral. And you can't count on the sample color on the cardboard being accurate either.

@Icegoddess I always swatch makeup somewhere and walk outside in sunlight. Did I ever mention to try lipsticks on the inside pad of your thumb? It's a closer texture/color to your lips. The inside of your arm is lighter and your hand is likely to have some sun on it.

@ @Alison Wonderland Think my tinted moisturizer w/ spf will work fine. I use up iffy lipsticks by melting a bit w/ colorless lip balm, melting in a measuring cup in microwave and pouring into little travel pots.

Talking about makeup....

there was a doctor on tv taking questions about the virus. A woman asked if the virus can attach itself to makeup. He said they do not know as this isn’t a high priority to test, but he did say it is possible. He said better to be safe and not wear make up until they know. I am only repeating what the doctor said, I know nothing about this one way or the other.

@Janey2 I do know with or without a virus, I sanitize makeup and brushes between clients.

Ed. Ok sorry maybe this is an Ulta or Sephora thing, i haven't been to either in years nor a Dept store beauty counter. i'm just no longer a MU person i have doubles of some things i liked at one time so long they should be tossed! especially lippies.

I have stopped wearing lip color and now only wear a dryish balm so the mask stays relatively clean. I don't wear lipstick at home ever, and I won't start now. I feel sad, as I truly love wearing lip gloss. I decided to keep up my eye makeup routine but I find that the humidity coming out of the mask makes my eyelashes fall straight and then you can hardly see them. So in a nutshell, this mask situation is ruining my makeup game! However, someday we'll be free faced and my glosses will get to shine again. I'm looking forward to that. I've been working on my skin with various new techniques and products so that hopefully, once unmasked, I'll look a little better than before (if the stress hasn't aged me 10 years LOL).
