Brows!!! Really bushy brows...weed wacker needed. Scared to have them tweezed professionally and when using Retin A, no waxing...will take off a layer of skin. So, just maintain them myself.

@Shanus Don't complain! Better than having too few! 😄 IDK if you happened to see this on the internet yesterday, but an adorable picture of a 92 y/o man as he was coloring his wife's (married 70 yrs) hair, as she, naturally, can't go to the salon. So sweet.

Good morning!

This may seem so petty and irrelevant at this time, but I KNOW that things will eventually go back to normal.

I have been curious about why it is that (1) an eyeshadow on the crease is referred to as "transition" when (2) it will be covered up with yet another eye shadow. What's the purpose of it to begin with?

This also goes for layering eyeshadows over eyeshadows on the lid so that the initial eyeshadow is no longer visible. I just don't get it.

For this senior all of this layering wouldn't apply. Just can't come to grips with starting out with one shade only to cover it up.

Here's my simple application: a soft, deeper shadow on the crease. Light wash on the lid with a smidgen of a darker shade at the corner of the eye I've heard referred to as the "V".

Is this the trend these days?

When I apply a transition shade, I apply mine above my crease. For me, I apply it there so that it helps the darker crease shade blend out and not look so harsh. That’s just me, and I know everyone applies e/s differently.

@pommom All good questions. The first layer of shadow is usually a pale color, close to skin tone. It either sets your eye shadow primer or if not using one, this light shadow tends to neutralize any redness or darkness on the lid.

The transition shade is usually a medium tone shadow placed in the crease and slightly above. It serves to ease the blending of other shadows on the eye as "transition" to dark to light.

For women "of a certain age", most eyes have become hooded giving them a sunken look with very little lid space when you look straight ahead in the mirror. Using a dark shadow in the crease intensifies that sunken look. I choose to keep a light shadow on the lid to bring it forward, a light to medium shade in the crease, but bring that shade up a little further towards the brow. That gives the illusion that the hooded area is sitting back where it used to be. Putting a very light or shimmer highlight under the brow for definition at our age is a little too "done" looking IMO. I prefer to sharpen the look of the brow using a thin line of concealer and blending w/ small brush.

The outer V you're referring to is to give shape/less roundness to the eye. Be sure the color is not too dark and just a tiny amount. You can always add more, but not take away. This V shade should be blended well into the lighter shade on the lid...you can go back afterwards and tap on a little more light shadow on top if needed.

On "older eyes" (mine included), I'm a 2 eye shadow gal, fast and easy. One light to medium tone from lash line to brow. That takes care of setting/disguising redness & veins on lid, transition shade & lightening under the brow. I use a slightly darker shade in the crease and slightly above. That mid tone shade is also the one I use under bottom lashes. I tightline w/ navy or dark charcoal waterproof pencil, mascara and done.

Happy to answer or clarify any other questions.

No, I watch anyone I like for various reasons. I do have the same eye shape, eye color, and skin type and tone as Mel T, but even if I didn't, I simply enjoy her. I like all the information she shares about products, old and new, and love watching her create different eye looks. Another woman I watch is Mrs Melissa M who I have nothing in common with, but, again, I like her. She is very knowledgeable about skincare and makeup (even though she uses 99% drugstore) and I enjoy her personality; very sweet lady. Anne P is also informative about new products and is a no-nonsense channel.

I'm not a novice with makeup and know what and how much looks right on me. I simply enjoy watching/listening to what they All have to say. In addition, the YouTubers I choose to watch are all "no drama" channels and stick to makeup discussions and tutorials.

I also watch, and love, The White Cottage Company. I've never made anything with wood or refinished furniture, but I thoroughly enjoy her channel.

@Mimi 1883 My recommendation re: which youtubers to follow was mostly for women who had specific issues. I was steering them towards "tutorials" closer to those in their age range..20 years younger is fine. It's difficult for me to follow a 30 year old's suggestions for skincare and foundation, for example. Her needs are quite different than for someone 71. Love Anne P, Melissa (think it's over 50 or 60...forgot the name of channel), follow Ms. Goldgirl who's mid-40's, Hot N' Flashy although she's had so much work done, her recommendations are not accurate re: skincare). Wayne Goss is a master for specific techniques, Lisa Eldridge is in mid-late 40's, etc. You can google makeup videos on YouTube for over 50, 60, etc.

I just watch to catch a new makeup/skincare product coming out. My techniques were taught years ago and updated in seminars. I do my "footwork" for new makeup coming out online, receive promo kits, used to go to stores to swatch myself for shades and get samples...will be doing that again soon, hopefully. Keep in mind most influencers are sponsored. Even if they say "No", just mentioning an eye shadow palette can bring them a promo kit worth hundreds of dollars in products and a hefty check for mentioning their line. They can accept it or not.

Tilbury or Bobbi Brown videos, Laura Mercier, Trish, etc. are ones I trust because it's their own makeup lines. Yes, they try to sell products, but the demos are helpful and carry over to other makeup brands.

I don't trust many skincare tutorials/videos. Everyone's skin is different and products are hit and miss. Expensive to try and not work. Someone can recommend Lancôme, for instance, receive a lifetime supply for themselves at no cost and they love it...works for their skin type. Does nothing for me and don't like products w/ fragrance. I am also not so keen on derms that try to sell their own skincare on YouTube. Like w/ everything else, consumers have to be smart about their purchases and think about ingredients, etc.

@Mimi 1883 wrote:

@Shanus I also forgot to ask you if you have a favorite eyeshadow palette? I'm enjoying Tarte palettes (Tarteist Pro, Tartelette, Toasted - some from each one) and the Pro Eyeshadow Palette from Doll 10. There are many others, but I keep reaching for those. Have you tried any of the $3 palettes from Elf so many are raving about?

@Mimi 1883 Right now my favorites are the older Naked Basics palettes...The smaller Nakeds 2 and the larger UD Ultimate Basics w/ 9 shadows (only avail. on Amazon) and several MAC prefilled 9 shadow palettes. A recent purchase this year was Marc Jacobs Stiletto, cool palette w/ greys, lavender and my go to is Laura Mercier's Artist's palette (not sure still available.) when do a more "done up" look. For everyday, it's usually the UD's matte, bronzer in the crease, tightline and mascara.

In my pro stash, I have too many to mention. Just went through them last week and tossed 15 palettes. Some had hit pan in the best colors and others just weren't used enough to take up space. Laura Mercier and Bobbi used to have single shadow w/ empty palettes that you filled with shades of choice. Both are getting away from that in favor of pre-filled palettes. Same w/ MAC. Less expensive to purchase ready made palettes.

I did try the ELF palettes and found too much fallout. Prefer Milani as my drugstore brand.

For some reason I just have not purchased any of her products, but just may purchase one of those. I think it was just so much hype for her and her makeup that I just didn't want to be a part of it, if that makes any sense. I didn't even purchase the much loved Pillow Talk lipstick. At least her products are cruelty free. 👍

I have the UD Born to Run (rarely, if ever use) and Naked Ultimate Basics which is a great neutrals and matte palette. Yes, forgot about Milani - Pure Passion and Must Loved Mattes; very nice. Before changing to cruelty free, I purchased Estée Lauder Violette - such pretty shadows - I was pleasantly surprised.

When I'm in a hurry I usually grab my Smashbox Cover Shot (mattes.) They're nice, nothing exceptional, so I'm not sure if I will repurchase. I think Drunk Elephant is outrageously priced. So many people, Wayne included (PR package) swear by their products, but like you said, they get the items in PR packages, so of course they're going to give a great review. I'll just stick with The Ordinary. 🙂
