I've never done roots myself but yikes my greys with my dark chocolate hair color in the last week are awful. I would have to spray a can of touch up daily! My stylist will fix it when the time comes I'm sure. I ordered dp hue root touch up from their web site. A girlfriend recommended to me. We will see!

You might want to call Clairol helpline and ask what products to use in your situation. Back when I was coloring (towards the end of that time period I was covering my roots biweekly) I was mixing my solution, pouring it into a bowl and using a paint brush to paint it on roots. After I finished the roots I mixed in about 1/4 cup shampoo into the solution and coated my remaining " natural" hair.

If you've never done your own color, don't even try it. Coloring roots only much trickier than all over color. To do roots correctly you part the. root area in small sections with a rat comb or color bottle tip and paint on the color. But there will be overlap of the new root color onto the blonde. If you don' get it right you get "banding'. That mean obvious shade difference. Then you time the color solution. With gray roots you need the proper shade level - blondes 8-10, Ash or gold. And the color needs an "N" Neutral for gray coverage. Timing varies depending on how quickly your hair "lifts" or takes developer. Plus you have to color the back of the crown. lots of factors.

i would avoid box colors . you don't know what you get and the blonde shades tend to run brassy

The first time i tried coloring on my own (eons ago) i used two shades of light brown from Wella and the 20v developer they recommended. the color came out 2-tone because i had a perm growing out and the color grabbed the permed hair and ended up with Level2 very dark brown while the crown and down to my ear level was level 5 warm brown. i had to get it cut off.

From reading the answers, I think I'm just going to grit my teeth and wait until it's safe for me to go in. I have never used color myself, unless you want to count the time when I was 13 and had my friend spray pure hydrogen peroxide all over my hair. That didn't go over well with TPTB. :-)

I am heeding the mandate to stay in as much as possible. So I really wouldn't be able to shop for color anyway.

I use L'Oreal Magic Root Cover-Up between colorings. It's a spray. You can get it at the drug store. My grocery doesn't carry the Red I use, so have to get it at the drug store. I mainly only use it on my part and in the area on the back of my head where I have swirlies and hard to keep covered with hair sometimes. If I get too much on the part I can take a wet q-tip and run along my part so my part isn't red.

I wouldn't try to actually color your roots. Your stylist will hate you. You don't want to have to get a color correction when you only wanted to get your roots done. But, she may not be able to just put pro color on top of anything permanent you might have used.

I use L’Oréal magic root cover up & clairol root touch up. L’Oréal washes out once you wash your hair. Clairol is semi-permanent. If I find myself not able to get to hairdresser for a long period of time, I use clairol. I have dark blonde hair & it matches perfectly. I’ve even gotten compliments after doing it myself.

Just go on YouTube and watch a tutorial. If you are blonde already just make sure you go one shade lighter than what you see on the box. I do my hair all the time and it is never brassy but a very natural shade of light blonde. Just be sure not to overlap and the last 5 minutes work it through your hair entirely. I put a plastic cap on my head while the color is developing. I order them from Amazon. The heat helps the color to develop.

Good luck! I use L'Oreal Excellence, it is great for gray coverage.
