When I got engaged at 20, kept it long for the wedding and 2 yrs. afterwards. When we adopted our son at 4 days old and I became preggers before he was 3 months old...my first thought? Back to short hair!!!

I had a tough time getting the stylist to cut all my curls off. She insisted on doing it in 3 appts. at no extra charge for same reason you mentioned. Too much angst/crying over hair cut too short. So, for the last 47 years I've worn a short (really short) pixie w/ several spells of growing it out to a chin length bob without layers...get tired of blow drying with brushes, styling products and cut it off again.

OK, so I've been letting my pixie layers grow out for many months. I know it's said that frequent cuts keep split ends away and makes hair grow faster. I say BS to that. My stylist gets scissor happy and takes off inches instead of the 1/4" inch I asked for. I've been in twice in 6 mos. to get that back mullet piece cut even w/ the sides and told her "NO LAYERS". Yep, she layered the neckline, so had to start over growing that out. I've been trimming my own bangs.

So, Wednesday's appt. if she's not clear about that 1/4" & no layers...just want back closer length to sides to achieve one length bob...I'm jumping out of the chair. I don't care yet if it's even all way around. I need another few inches on sides before she can do that cut. When my hair gets to an awkward stage, I'm lucky that I can wear it curly and weird lengths is not an issue. Now the neckline is really too long.

Anyone else go to a haircut w/ photos and dread how much will actually be cut off?

I've also taken pics in to stylists in my past, I'm convinced they just don't listen or get what we want to achieve. They more or less do what they want to do, many are scissor happy. We walk out looking nothing like what we thought we'd accomplish. Perhaps with your gilr, you just need to tell her, no cutting of the hair today. If this is the only reason you see her (because you don't get color on your hair), then my best adise would be, don't make an appointment until you really need one or want one - or maybe it's time to find someone else. That's a feat in itself though, finding a new place to go or a new stylist somewhere.

If she starts doing it incorrectly, I would definitely get up and leave. You can fix what she started, and find a new stylist....or trim it yourself in back, I do, not that hard at all.

Wish we could exchange stylist.

So many times I come home from getting "my hair cut" and my husband says "I thought you were getting your hair cut".

They will cut off 1/4 of an inch at most. And then they ask if I want my bangs trimmed. My bangs are past my eyes. And I say yes, and they trim them 1/4 of an inch. I say you can cut more off and it is like they are afraid to cut anymore off.

I have fine thin hair, so I like to wear it layered. But last Tuesday I actually trimmed some of my own hair on the sides of my head. I never did that before. And I actually like it better than when I came back from the hairdresser last time. I no longer have wisps of hair going in every direction.

And I have switched salons and hairdressers. I wish I could get a consistent good haircut from the same stylist.

My stylist always says that she will cut a small amount and if I want more she will go back and cut some more off. She can’t do it the other way around. Also I show her the amount I want cut. For my money I would try to find a new stylist. Why be unhappy?

@Shanus I quit going to get my hair cut and do it myself now. I grew it long and wear it natural.. no dyes or colors. It is easy, looks great... no mistakes or worries. I can wear it back, up, and all kinds of ways. I get complements all the time!

I use to wear a shorter hairstyle and I had to go get it trimmed about every 30 days... dreaded going. So much easier not worrying about that anymore now that I am in control of my hair. Plus it saves me over a $100 a month!

I cut my own short hair too, love having control over the cut and style. I've only goofed up once or twice, and get compliments all the time.

I watched and learned while stylist was cutting it, and always had to trim it better when I got home, or wait until it "grew out" so decided to give it a whirl doing it myself. As it has changed with aging, greying, thinning, I've changed the style many times over the years, but always a short style.

I began this 25 years ago, have never looked back.....

It seems like you have given her enough time to get it right, maybe it's time for a breakup.

I would show them with my fingers pinched together how much I wanted trimmed. That worked for me better than saying inches.

@Shanus I often go from pixie with many layers to a one length bob.

As I am growing out the top layer which is the shortest, I often get the bottom layered because it doesn't matter. I even continue to have my "ears cut out" for a while.

I eventually want the top layer to be a certain length for the bob. By the time the top and longest layer is where I want it to be, all my hair is at the same length on the bottom.

Even if your hair is all shoulder length, the hair at the nape and around the ears is shorter than the hair that grows on the crown area.

As long as your hair dresser does not cut the very top layer any shorter, you should be okay.

Getting frequent trims is to keep your hair looking as good as possible while growing out. if you wear your hair short and do not color, perm, straighten or use chemicals on your hair, you won't have any split ends. Cutting does not make your hair grow faster or slower no matter what you do. Hair grow is determined by your genes.

Hair naturally grows faster in the summer months. The average growth for most people is 1/2 a month. Mine grows faster than that.
