I have heard it but never with any credibility. All things in moderation. It's not like you are exposed for long.

Experts have been warning about this for awhile. Claiming that you should put an SPF on your hands before putting them under the light. We are exposed to harmful elements all day everyday so not sure if this is worthy of being alarmed.

Yes yes, and yes again. My sister had cancer twice on her hands from uv nail lamps through the years due to weekly manicures/ nail tips and uv nail lamps. My advice is stay away from them. She had two different cancers both very dangerous.

According to the NIH the risk is low and only a few studies have been done to substantiate the claims.

@go2girl I am sorry your sister had to go through this. Could they actually prove that is what caused her cancer? Once a week exposure? I have to wonder if she would have had this happen anyway? You don't hear about this very much the way you hear about the dangers of tanning beds. There is so much more exposure there and for a longer amount of time.

The NIH recommends wearing sunscreen on your hands before placing them under a UV lamp. Makes sense to me.

The germs and virus spread potential from the hands all being placed in same spot all day, day after day, is the risk I would worry about...can't say for certain about all salons, but none I ever went to did I ever see it being wiped down during the day as women constantly use the same spot for their hands.

I always assumed UV light is harmful anywhere you're exposed. I've heard cases of cancer not just on hands, but under the nails even though there were a few coats of polish. When I go to my derm, she requests no makeup, no self tanning and no polish on fingers or toes so she can carefully check for melanoma.
