Are Perms Making A Comeback?

I've read a couple threads in this forum about those who had gotten perms, and I was just wondering if perms were making a comeback?

I've noticed several middle school girls with perms the past couple of years. My mom gets them regularly and gets her hair styled at the salon twice each week. Sometimes I'd like to have one to give me some body as my hair has always been thin, but I'm afraid of how it might affect ct my hair in the long run. Are today's perms damaging to the hair?

I've got very fine hair, and I've had two perms in the last year, the first one lasted a good eight months, and I got it refreshed/redone at that point because I had an important event to attend and wanted to look my best. I just had a color treatment today, and my stylist said the trim she did after the color brought the curl right back, and the perm is in good shape. I use WEN cleansing conditioner, and that keeps my fine hair in great condition, even with the significant chemical treatments I've been doing. I remember getting home perms when I was a child, and I think they were more damaging than the perms I have gotten at the salon, but that might be due more to the better cleansing treatments I use (WEN) than to any change in the perm chemicals, I don't know. I would recommend that, if you want a perm, you go to a professional at a salon who is familiar with doing perms, rather than trying a home perm, because they will be able to assess the condition of your hair and determine if a perm is a good idea, as well as how long to process your hair. For all my hair is very fine, it is VERY resistant to curling, so I need to process for the maximum time, but my stylist is able to gauge that, where I probably couldn't (not to mention being far better able to use those rollers!).

@wildcat fan Damaging = NO By the time your hair grows out and you need another perm - the old hair is just cut off. If your Mom's hair hasn't suffered why would you fear it? Gives thin limp thin hair body - brush and go.............................

When I was a teen in the 80's I had perms then, and I always went to the salon to have it done.

Now that my hair is becoming more "salt & pepper", it just seems so much work to keep up with the color. I just might stop coloring my hair all together and instead get a perm again.

I am going to let my hair get some legnth first, before I decide one way or the other about getting a perm.

I appreciate your reply @fthunt . I haven't had a perm in years. The last one I got was a spiral perm and it was difficult to manage and made my hair really dry afterwards. That was before I started getting highlights which I realize can also damage my hair. I guess the key is finding a good stylist who knows what he/she is doing.

Perms never went away for me. I have been getting them for years. Gives me as close to wash to go hair as I'm sure I'll ever have. They don't have to be horrible. I have pics on here including some I posted yesterday under Curly Hair Product that Works.

Over 10 years ago I got my last perm, and my stylist almost did the dance of joy. I always thought they ( the perms) made my life easier. It was a revelation to me how easy it was to manage my mid length Bob. You have to do what is best for you , but I love being perm free.

@wildcat fan Yes. Damaging. Especially for thinner, weaker hair.

Interesting I’ve been debating a perm as I love a loose wave and have stick straight fine hair and really don’t like to spend a ton of time on my hair anymore. I don’t think my hair could take a perm now though as I have pretty heavy blonde highlights. My last perm was probably in the late 80’s. some hairs would burn off whenever I had a perm and I’d have a bit of “stubble” but it wasn’t an issue back then as I had a ton of hair. Now, not so much....

I have been getting perms for 30 years now. So easy with no hair dryers, curling irons and brushes needed. Wash or wet, put a long roller in the bangs, do makeup while it dries, fluff out or slight tease, spray and go. When raining still looks good and no need to keep checking my hair. I know many who get them. Not as harsh and not the perms of earlier times.

i think the body perm is making a come back. i just had this discussion with my hair stylist. i had them back in the day and am considering it again. i would only go to a professional as i also get my hair colored. i've been going to my guy, for 30 yrs and he knows me and my hair.

i bet there are many ladies with perms, out there, you just don't know it. hair doesn't have to scream "i'm a perm!".

I can't stand my hair to be straight, it drags me down and screams "gravity is winning", so I add a little bounce in my hair to perk it up.

You're giving me ideas. Wore my hair long, parted on the side in high school and college. When I began a professional job after college, I wanted a change. Hair stylist suggested cutting hair to shoulders, layering and getting a perm. My favorite look to this day. So easy to take care of and truly, never a bad hair day. When I want that same look, I sleep in the pink foam rollers. The perms have to be better and safer now. When I decide to go all gray -- I may do this again. I don't have thin hair -- but it's not as full as it used to be.

I have snow white, baby fine hair and I get perms! They actually improve my hair and make it more manageable. Wash and wear hair with a style!

Perms have been improved like everything else and are not damaging like the older ones were. No more tiny rods. Rods the size of my fingers! Nice curls!

Since reading this thread yesterday, I've looked up some photos online of body wave perms, and I can see why many are choosing to get those. There was a review in Glamour magazine where the writer showed before and after photos. Seems like this would be much easier and faster for those wanting a beach wave than curling the hair each day.
