Here's a question for the women here who have worked outside the home but now do not:

Unless you have a physical condition that prevents you from working, how do/did you get over the guilt, if any, of not being productive, etc.?

I worked over 32 yrs at my last employer, took early retirement when I realized I'd have to go back to FT or retire early, otherwise, my pension would keep dwindling down to zilch. Plus I had a son in kindergarten and one starting junior high school, so I was busy enough without the 70 mi/day commute, etc. Even so, I've struggled all these yrs with the guilt of not working. Nobody says anything....plus I'm widowed, so no dh to complain, etc.

Just my own guilt.

I'm now going back to work FT next week at 60 y/o because of othe economy, plus down to just 1 son still at home.

My bff has 2 doctorate degrees, is an empty nest wife, and recently quit her job which became quite unbearable emotionally/mentally for her. She and her dh are involved in a new start-up independent lab, and she's already getting some things started there, but it's not "up and running" full-time yet.

She's now struggling terribly with guilt over not working. They're OK financially - that's not the issue.

Thoughts?
