Need makeup suggestions for 14 y/o

Anyone know of a good makeup kit that would be good for a 14 year old girl? She is just starting to be interested in wearing makeup and asked for some for Christmas.

Being 14, I want to get her something good for her skin, and in muted light colors (blush, eyeshadow) and maybe a CC cream to just even out her skin texture.

I am lost, it is hard to find kits with everything in one pallet. Healthy makeup, and not heavy looking makeup.

Any suggestions? Doesn't have to be QVC or HSN, I have a Sephora and an Ulta nearby.

Ulta usually has kits around this time of year. When my niece was around that age I bought her a kit there....had eyeshadows, lip colors, etc. Just enough for her to experiment with for a good price (about $19.99 a few years ago).

Ulta is full of kits right now.

I was in my local Ulta yesterday and a mom was in there buying for her young teenage daughter. She said that she had brought her daughter into the store the past weekend to get ideas on what she might like then went back to purchase. Maybe you could do the same.

With the approval of the parents, I'd get a neutral colored kit for her to play around with. As a sophomore, I remember wearing bright blue eyeshadow - how ridiculous I must have looked!

I would suggest a BB or CC cream with an SPF that matches her skin tone. (Never too early to protect your skin.) A soft blush color and then a mascara. I took my daughter to a cosmetics counter and had her and the saleslady chose the items that would look good on her skin tone. She also decided on a lip gloss to complete the look. She was very happy with her new look and enjoyed being able to choose her items.

Thank you. I was thinking a CC cream also. She is very fair but her skin is at the ruddy, uneven, a few breakouts (not many) place so I thought CC cream would be more lightweight.

I think I will check out Ulta. Much appreciate suggestions, thank you.

Clinique is a very natural looking make-up for a lighter, youthful, fresh look. Their ingredients are great for sensitive skin.

@gabstoomuch Since she is only 14, go to the drugstore and ask the sales person if there are sets available. If not, Burt's Bees has great lip balms (they are narrow and long in size) and called Lip Shimmers for $4.99 perfect for a 14 yr. old. Check out Maybelline, Revlon, L'Oreal and others to see what you can pick up. As far as ULTA, the young girls love Kylie Cosmetics and I own her blush in pale pink that is beautiful for $18. ULTA may have some sets on sale so talk to a sales person. Good luck. I think a little blush, some lipstick balm and perhaps mascara would be a good start and even a light neutral color shadow for the eyes. Think of getting her started on a very mild exfoliator and a moisturizer. If her skin is oily try a toner.

I have a teen girl, too. She just like to experiment with makeup, but she doesn't wear makeup daily. I would suggest getting mini-size sets, since most likely she wouldn't wear makeup a lot.

Here are some mini sized items that she might be interested.

And for eyeshadows, I would go with drugstore brands. Many are as good (or better) than high end brand, that way they (teen girls) can really play with different colors (and they expire way before you can use them up anyways).

I recommend the Milani eyeshadow palettes-- Most Loved Mattes, Soft and Sultry, Pure Passion or Bold Obsessions (You can get those from Target right now on sale for $10 each). If you do get the Milani eyeshadows, get a set of Real Technique brushes to go with it.

I personally find CC cream too heavy for my acne prone skin. My teen daughter doesn't wear any CC cream or foundation. Their skins are so good at that age (even with the occasionally break outs), that they don't need any color correcting products.

Depends. Was everyone else wearing blue eyeshadow? There have been periods where that was the look.

We may look back on it now and think we looked awful, but back then, you could have been right on point.

@gabstoomuch - IT has a nice holiday kit here. I think it's still available. The reviews are mixed, but I'm still using one I got a few years ago. She would have fun playing with it!

I also think Bare Minerals is great for a teen just starting to wear makeup. Glosses, mineral veil, blush and a little mascara. Nothing heavy and clean makeup too.

Kids that age love to go to Ulta. I would take her to Ulta so she can look at different shades of glosses & tinted balms. I am surprised at 14 that she needs a CC Cream but if so she will have to be matched with her skin shade also with blushes. You will see that she does have a preference instead of just picking out shades you think she may like. I would suggest looking at the Twofaced counter & Bareminerals & their Complexion Rescue tinted moisturizer with spf would be a suggestion. Ulta has a drugstore section too so you have more options as far as eyeshadow. I don't think you need a kit but make your own with the products she sees that she likes & also get her a cute makeup bag to open up for xmas with all her goodies. @gabstoomuch

I would get her a gift card to sephora or a store she has access to,. I could not buy my daughter or granddaughter a pair of sock if they if I wasn't told what kind. Kids are very picky. Makeup is a very personal thing. She may not know what she wants until she looks and tries it on. JMO

When I was young and had the beautiful skin of youth, I WANTED makeup but did not NEED makeup. Now that I'm older and have some red and brown in my skin, I NEED makeup but do not WANT to wear any.

@gabstoomuch I'm not a fan of teens wearing makeup until they are 16. Maybe because that's when I started and I was a senior at the time. After thinking about it that's when I started "officially". I did meet my friends in the bathroom before class and used theirs and then removed it before going home.

While you are buying the introductory makeup kit, please also think about purchasing a gentle Cleanser and share a few tips with her:

Never share mascara or lip products with her bffs and
Make sure to remove all makeup every night before going to bed.
