Tip for those who color their hair and use 'grey covering' powder

Today, I had my hair touched up with my usual medium brown. When my stylist was finished blow drying my hair, she said "Ummm, didn't you mention you use a colored powder for your roots?" Note: I rarely use it but I waited 6 weeks for my appointment so all this week I used it on my part. I did let her know I used it yesterday.

Here's my point that I wanted to share:

The color didn't take on a portion of my part and she had to re-do it. She said it happened with a few other clients as well.

I use the Joan Rivers powder from QVC. I guess it works pretty well if hair color can't penetrate it! Next time, I need to wash my hair (if I've used it) prior to getting a touch up!

I generally use a spray instead of a powder, but I never use it after my final wash before I color.

Before coloring my hair be it at home or at my salon I wash my hair the day before with a clarifying shampoo. I use Neutragena Shampoo (Anti-residue Formula). My stylist recommends this to all her clients. She says it removes all residue from your hair, this helps with your hair taking the color better and more even.

My stylist asked me to refrain from using the powder or spray before appointments.

Here’s what I do before coloring. Take a cotton pad and saturate it with my Neutrogena bottle of eye makeup remover. Rub over hair areas where I have used gray coloring powders or mascara. Repeat until cotton is nearly clean. I take an old towel and pat dry a bit on those areas and then color as usual. No need to wash hair that way.

Just a tip if you don't want to spend a lot on the hair powders, you can use an eyeshadow that matches your hair color. My hairdresser gave me that tip. It's cheaper and works.

I also use in expensive waterproof brown black mascara for my brunette hair.
