Why is everybody going blonde?

I think it really adds a whole new dimension to aging and looking desperate when all these women who have been gorgeous brunettes their whole life decide to be a beach blonde at 60 ish. I know I will get slammed for this and thats OK I expect that, but I just cant get used to seeing some of these women in this hair color because NUMBER ONE, it looks unattractive on them and their coloring and if it looked great i would be the last to say anything. I personally have colored my brown hair for too long and I am happy to see it instead of gray. Is this just part of our desperate culture to hide everthing and look like what we arent? I think it is and I am disappointed to see this because it sends such a silly silly message. Blonde hair isnt going to make you look younger and I am not naming names but if you think hard you can figure out a few women. Gees, just buy a wig and get over it already.

@Thebig I : I colored my hair for over 30 years until at 63, I asked myself what was the point? I concluded that for me there was no point in pretending anymore. I had my hair cut so short that in 2 haircuts I was gray. Now twelve years later I have healthy mid back length silver hair (I get it trimmed quarterly). DH loves it and so do I!

I don't know if everybody is. We just like trying something new now and then. I don't see a thing wrong with it. With some it's just more drastic. Maybe they like it. You only have to please yourself. Much of what you said is your idea of why women try different things. I don't find it necessarily true of everyone. I really don't care why one would make the changes they do in their appearance. I'm glad we all have a choice. I just don't label it as a message we are sending. Seems to me you're the one doing the slamming.

I don't think they're desperate, they just want to try something different & good for them...it's fun to change things up. I'm 68 & coloring my hair using high & low lights, it's something new to me & I love it...I don't need to justify the change to anyone, it's for ME.

I've never been able to get my dark brown hair blonde. Now I have a lot of white hairs, I am using dark blonde and getting a very nice lighter color with nice highlights (Shade is really darker than the box, as always, and a light brown).

But the main reason that I am going blonder/lighter is that it blends better with the white/gray roots than brown hair color. So I can touch up a lot less often, White/gray roots are too stark with brown hair and blend in better with blonde hair. JMHO

Blond is softer than black. When one is aging, black hair or dark hair is harder and makes one appear older. Blond is also a good color for graying. Roots are easier to camouflage.

A good transitioning color. It is easier to grow gray from blond than any other color. I tried them all. I even tried doing foiling of "pretend grey." Just a champagne blond worked best for me because I have similar natural color hair and my gray leans toward that instead of a pure white.

@Thebig I Maybe the reason for the blonde thing is that past a certain age, the dark coloring doesn't hold well over white hair. I know that's the reason I went lighter (not blonde, though) with my hair color.

One reason I think is because with the lighter hair color, the gray roots aren't as noticeable. When your a brunette and you color your hair, those roots will start to show in about 4 weeks, and then at 6 weeks, esp. if your on TV you'll have to go get a touch up so you don't look like a skunk!!

With the blonde hair the gray more or less blends in a little better, at least for a short while. Looks better than a skunk stripe.

@VegasBusinessWoman That's the reason I stopped coloring my hair and went naturally silver. Dark hair became too harsh against my fair skin.

I only like natural blond hair, so I don't think it's attractive on anyone if it isn't God given. I get it if you have dark hair and your gray hair comes in wonky you want to do something about it. I was lucky when I started to gray, it came in like I silver frosted my hair, that must be hereditary because my cousin grayed the same way.

What they said... Nature is taking us in a lighter direction. As we age, darker hair is harsh and looks flat. My hair is not totally gray but streaks give nice highlights under my color. Although I miss the red in my natural, medium brown hair, I'm thrilled with my transitional color. We're all doing what works for us.

I have no intention of going blonde. It's red for me and has been for years. But, I also have no intention currently of letting myself go grey. I color it red because I like it red and I don't really care what anybody else thinks about it.

That being said, I do know that the lighter the hair color, the easier the transition to grey. You can go longer between touchups. I have to do my roots every 4, maybe 5 weeks if I use a root touchup spray to hide the greys. Just as well since red fades quickly, so I need to refresh my length by that time too, although if I could only find a good color-depositing conditioner I could keep the fading at bay.

Everybody? Other than some of the hosts on QVC, I haven't seen anyone going blonde.

In fact - after being a blonde myself for the last 30 years, I've gone "au naturale." I think I was the last of my "crowd" to stop coloring.

I know there is one host on the Q that had very dark Brown hair and has gone Blond and from the comments I'ev seen everyone seems to think she looks awful but I don't agree. I think she looks fabulous as a blond. I wouldn't say she looks younger but IMHO she sure looks more attractive. It just goes to show you it's all in the eye of the beholder.

@Thebig I Is coloring your hair brown your whole adult life "just part of our desperate culture to hide everthing and look like what we arent?" If you propose to be your true, authentic self, you'd let your hair go gray. Then you'd look like what you are.

Don't know why QVC hosts suddenly went blond at the same time. There was a discussion here several months ago about this subject.

As for other women, I think many go blond because they think gray hair makes them look older. If still working, looking younger is advantageous in our youth oriented culture.

Depending on skin color, the right blond color is softer than dark hair around the face on older women and in some cases they do look younger, but the wrong color can look harsh and aging. Lightening dark hair a bit to medium or light brown rather than going blond may be more flattering on some women.

I also think there might be some who like the blonde image or think they look better with it.

For those not wanting to go gray, look at some of the silver-haired ladies on Pinterest. They are stunning.

Excellent suggestion. Eleven years ago when I was 50 considering natural hair color came across "Cindy Joseph's" amazing story about being discovered by D&G photographer while walking NYC. Cindy stopped coloring her hair was silver grey, long also.

If memory serves me right she was 49 started very successful modeling career. She inspired me to stop coloring my hair. For me it was the best experience and choice. Everyone has different opinions on this subject. No woman should belittle anyone. On a final note: Cindy Joseph was diagnosed with cancer couple years ago. Her wonderful positive spirit lives on through her company "Boom" and YT videos. Inspirational she made a difference.

I thought her natural dark hair complimented her olive skin tone better than the blonde she has now.
