@Anonymous032819 The #1 and most important question is this:

Do you want a mask with or without protein?

The MAJORITY of hair masks on the market contain protein. Hair that does NOT need it will suffer from a mask with it: it will coat, it will dry out, it will NOT HELP IN ANY WAY and make your hair worse. Most people don't realize this and assume that a mask to help with damaged hair is the same thing as a hair that needs MOISTURE. It is not.

My hair suffers using a mask with protein...badly. Google hair masks with NO protein and you will find a list of them from $5 to $60.00. A great one is made by L'Oreal and is sold at Ulta, Walmart, etc. It comes in a gold and black label plastic jar (name escapes me). Ulta sells many of them, btw.

Protein listed in products:

*hops

*rice

*soy

*wheat

*silk

*as well as long names I can't spell/pronounce.

All followed by the word "protein/proteins"

Once you figure out what your hair needs and you find the right mask, you'll be amazed at the difference.

BTW: DevaCurl and the Carol Daughters' Manoi were two of the WORST products I ever used on my hair. Beware if you are AVOIDING PROTEIN in your mask. Joico K-Pak is another one filled with protein but loved by the majority.

Hair Masks?

Can anyone recommend a really good moisturising hair mask?

I recently tortured my hair by stripping it of old, built up color by using Color Prep and then using Color Oops! then applying fresh new color to it.

By the way, if anyone uses Color Oops! and/or Color Prep hair color remover, use in a well ventelated area, as both have a strong sulfer stench to it.

So, needless to say, I used a lot of chemicals, strong ones at that, on my hair.

I want my damaged, straw-like fine hair, to return to a healthier state.

Any recommendations on a hair mask that can moisturize my hair without weighing it down?

Thank-you to everyone in advance!

@kaemarie wrote:

olaplex

Olaplex is not a moisturizing mask, it's a bond repair agent that helps repair molecular bonds in hair that have been damaged, usually because of bleach. From their site: "It is important to remember that Olaplex is NOT a conditioner. Conditioners are cosmetic whereas Olaplex works internally to cross link single sulfur hydrogen bonds to create disulfide bonds. Moisture and protein are entirely separate issues that should be addressed separately."

@Anonymous032819, if you used bleach on your hair (ColorOops isn't bleach, so something else) or have heat damage, then Olaplex 3 might be a starting point.

If your hair needs moisture, I really like:

WEN ReMoist

DevaCurl Heaven in Hair

Curls Blueberry Bliss Reparative Hair Mask

Shea Moisture Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydration Hair Masque (Shea Moisture is all about long product names)

If your hair needs protein (which it likely does after a color treatment), I like:

DevaCurl Deep Sea Repair

Aphogee Two-Step Protein Treatment & Balanced Moisturizer

Briogeo Don’t Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask

You can read more about when hair needs protein here: https://therighthairstyles.com/best-protein-treatments-for-hair/

You can overdo moisture or protein, so always follow directions. If the directions say to use it once a month, don't use it more often than that.

Choose a protein mask instead if that's what you need, but with all that chemical mistreatment, you'll probably want to treat 1-2 x's a week from now on with a moisture mask too.
