topic Fragrance Aficionados...Some questions in Beauty

I know there are several ladies here who seem to know quite a lot about fragrance. After reading and posting in the body powder thread, I realized that many of us like the smell of powder. I have often read reviews of perfumes and a common comment is that a powdery smell is not at all liked. I think I would like a perfume with a powdery smell. To me, that means soft and light and not sharp smelling. Could someone tell me why that seems to be a consensus? And could you give me an example or two of a powdery fragrance?

Also, I ordered a 4 bottle set of French Perfume (at least advertised as such) from the Vermont Country Store, an orange scent, violet, Provence and lavender. The only one I really like is the lavender because it smells like the real lavender in my garden. I don't want to reorder the set just to get this one. Could you recommend a natural smelling lavender fragrance? I think the one I have is just a single note.
