@Still Raining wrote:

Is not a collagen peptide molecule just another name for a fully hydrolyzed collagen molecule? The same thing? Just means the amino acids making collagen have been split to smaller components.

From what I understand, you are right. They are sort of the same thing. Hydrolyzation is the process used to break down the collagen. "Hydrolyzed" doesn't say how well broken down the collagen fragments are. However, peptides can be isolated so that the fragments are actually chosen and designed and are therefore more targeted. Plain hydrolyzed collagen can be any old collagen pieces. It's less refined. You don't really know what you are getting unless it is branded and the brand tells you.

"

Collagen peptides are a versatile source of protein and an important element of healthy nutrition. Their nutritional and physiological properties promote the health of bones and joints, and contribute to beautiful skin.

Collagen consists of three polypeptide chains. These so-called α-chains are wrapped around each other to form triple-helical macromolecules: a unique structure, size and amino acid sequence. In collagenous sequences, glycine (Gly) is present as every third residue. This enables the formation of the three chains into a triple-helical structure. Thus, the common feature for all collagens is a sequence that can be expressed as (Gly-X-Y)*n, where X and Y are frequently represented by proline (Pro) and hydroxyproline (Hyp), respectively. This sequence is necessary for the collagen to assemble the fibrils that subsequently form fibers, providing unmatched structural integrity for the extracellular matrix of conjunctive tissues.

The raw material for collagen peptides – as for gelatine – is collagen protein. Collagen peptides, however, are relatively small molecules with a molecular weight of less than 10,000 g/mol. The peptides comprise at least two and at most 100 amino acids. They are characterized by excellent cold-water solubility and, even in highly concentrated solutions, they do not form a gel."

https://www.gelita.com/en/knowledge/collagen-peptides/what-are-collagen-peptides

Collagen Supplement In Pill Form?

Can anyone recommend a collagen supplement that comes in pill form? With Vital Proteins’ capsule option, you have to take 6 a day. That’s unrealistic for me. I’d like to find something that only requires 2 or 3 a day. Does that exist???

Not what you’re asking for but...

i was taking 6 collagen capsules daily (2 Biocell and 4 Neocell). I’ve recently changed my thinking and switched to a product called Code Age Multi Collagen Peptide Powder (Amazon). It’s super easy to use, just mix a scoop into my morning coffee. There’s no taste and it mixes in well (no floating globs). If you are more of a smoothie drinker than coffee, it’ll mix in a smoothie too. I like this stuff and set it up on subscription with Amazon.

Unfortunately most protein supps, including collagen supps, require that you take large quantities of them. That's because proteins in general are large molecules...there's no way around that.

There are available liquid collagen supplements which are flavored. Neocell makes one, for example.

But the articles are fairly technical and most people would find them difficult to understand. Basically they state that collagen supplementation has beneficial effects on skin, that being the supp improves skin texture by making it smoother with less wrinkles. The studies I've come across are limited and so I would take that with some skepticism.

Supplement studies are much like nutritional studies where participants

track food for months at a time. They’re usually not very accurate,

unless supplement/food is administered under a controlled environment

(hospital, etc). Too much room for human error to report it accurately.

As for collagen supplements working...

Maybe it’s the additional water/liquid being used to drink/take the

supplements which are affecting the skin?

Maybe taking a supplement encourages the participant to eat better.

Maybe that’s affecting the skin?

The Placebo Effect is pretty strong...especially when one consciously

invests $$ in to a pill/drink they consume every day.

Increased Blow Flow is the best ‘supplement’ for healthier

skin, hair & joint pain.

Collagen peptide molecules are smaller than hydrolyzed collagen powder. They are better. They don't taste or smell like leather and you don't have to take as large of quantities. I'm biased towards Verisol collagen peptides because I like their studies. There's a thread in this forum about Verisol already. I only have to take 3 large caplets of the Verisol. I also take Peptan (for overall collagen and joints) and the recommended dose is four capsules, but I just take 3 first thing in the morning.

Is not a collagen peptide molecule just another name for a fully hydrolyzed collagen molecule? The same thing? Just means the amino acids making collagen have been split to smaller components.

Any protein in the gut will be broken down into amino acids.... eventually. But there is where the problem begins. Some of the protein is not broken down (by enzymes) in the gut because of various reasons. Supps have it broken down for you...sort of pre-digested kind of thing. The more a supp has it broken down, for instance into collagen and peptides, the better the absorption in the gut. Some researchers say taking vitamin C along with your protein supp can help it absorb better. I do that even though there's no real evidence that says it works or not.

Does that exist???

@StillRachB ...take a look at NEOCELL SUPER COLLAGEN+C with Biotin. ..its 3 tablets daily, 3 G of Bovine...collagen 1 &2. Good for hair, skin, nails, and joints. I think it's the best I've seen so far, high in Bovine Collagen. I just purchased it at Walmart...I'll start with 2 tabs. I was interested mainly for a skin issue I sometimes get, and my joints.
