My Sebaceous Hyperplasia is Finally Resolving

I've stuggled with Sebaceous Hyperplasia on my forehead for several years. A few years ago I went two rounds with Paula's Choice BHA9 at $40+ a pop. I hated the stickiness of that stuff but stuck with it and it didn't do anything. I gave up and lived with it, had bangs cut to cover it. Not quite a month ago, on a whim, I decided to give plain ol' Stridex Pads (Maximum Strength) a whirl. They have 2% salicylic acid and are alcohol free. There's menthol in the ingredients but I don't notice any overpowering scent or tingling. I've been faithfully using the pads every morning as my first step after cleansing and darn if the SH isn't going away!! I'm happy to have found such an inexpensive remedy that's easily accessible and will be easy to continue.

@JeanLouiseFinch Stridex - that's something I haven't seen or heard about in years. My mother always had those in the cabinet for use during an occasional breakout.

More proof that sometimes the old products are the best. Glad your problem is being resolved.

Thank you, @JeanLouiseFinch. I have this same issue and boy do I need help! Like you, I've had it for many years. Sometimes it gets a tiny bit better and I have no idea what product made the difference. Since Stridex is cheap and readily available, I will give it a try, too. Can't hurt.....I hope.

I hope you have success too, @pupwhipped As tempting as it might be to use AM and PM, I'd recommend not going crazy with it. I think doing it twice a day could cause drying.

OP - thanks for the tip, I have sebaceous hyperplasia and I will be getting

Stridex pads very soon! :-)

I saw a dermatologist and was diagnosed with it. She said she could remove

them with cryptotherapy (the freeze gun) but it is considered a cosmetic procedure

and insurance would not pay for it.

So thank you VERY much, the Stridex pads will be much more budget

friendly than a trip to the dermatologist's office!!

I'm glad you found something that helped you.

When I first started using BHAs it was Stridex pads and that wasn't too long ago. I posted about it here and caught a lot of flack about how bad they are. But I have never had any problem with them ever. Then I started using Paula's but I didn't think it was really any better, especially for the price difference. Eventually I started making my own DIY 2% salicylic acid pads and that is not easy to dissolve the acid to make it go into solution. So now I am back full circle with using the Stridex once again and happily so.

Another great tip: I use the Stridex Pads on my heels. Gets rid of the dry skin.

Yes, @JeanLouiseFinch, I will definitely start slow...probably every other day at first. And I forgot to mention, I also had tried Paula's Choice and I didn't like the way it felt on me either. Several months ago I saw a derm for another problem and asked about the SH. He gave me metro gel (think that's it?, I'm not at home right now) and I can't say it's really helped much either. This stuff is tuff and it's a hard battle to win. Ha!

@JeanLouiseFinch I am so glad I saw this, I have tried the BHA9 and I use the liquid right now, I seem to be getting more since I started into my later 40's now, I NEED moisture but the more I use the more of these SH I keep getting, mine are around forehad and on one of my cheeks and jawline, getting hard to cover. I will for SURE be picking this up!

Stridex in the U.S. is reasonably priced, the alcohol free version is in the red packaging and is about $5 U.S. a box.

@SandGirl I know what you mean. It seemed to me that certain products would aggravate the situation for me too, if they were too emolient. For that reason, I prefer a lighter weight, more lotion consistency, moisturizer in the daytime. I use a cream at night but am careful not ot use too much on my forehead.

@JeanLouiseFinch Me too, I LOVE some of Dr D's creams but I seem to get them really badly after using them for only a week, I tried Hydroshield once and they went crazy, I always had oily skin in my younger years, i still have combo but no breakouts and I need to moisturize otherwise my skin looks much older.... I really hope this helps out, I will pick some up when I am at the store next, too expensive from Amazon!

Funny you mentioned Paula’s choice, as I found a lot of her products very sticky; none of her products helped me at all.

I had about 40-50 sebaceous hyperplasia. My former dermatologist wanted to charge $100.00 for every 15 he treated. My new dermatologist treats with the electric needle. He sapped as many as I could stand him to do in one session. He only charged me $40.00. On a return visit he zapped the rest of them. Again only $40.00. Previously a former dermatologist tried to freeze them off. That didn't work. Only the electric needle works for me. Since they are overgrown oil glands that makes sense. They are notorious for coming back. I will try the Stridex pads as well. I too have used Paulas Choice BHA 2% and 40% it didn't touch them. I'm surprised a dermatologist would prescribe Metro Gel since it is used mostly to treat inflammation from rosacea. Metro Gel didn't work for my rosacea I guess my skin is pretty stubborn!!!! @JeanLouiseFinch, just wanted to give a little update. I got the Stridex and have been using nightly for about five days or so. I do think it is helping! The bumps definitely feel smoother on my forehead and they look a bit better, also. Thanks so much for this simple suggestion. I should add that I bought the lesser strength Stridex pads as I wanted to start off really slow...always the best way to go. I got the ones in the green box and they have 0.5% strength of the salicylic acid rather then the 2% of the ones in the red box. They are also alcohol free and have the addition of aloe. These:

@pupwhipped - good to hear. I m kinda surprised at the lower strength but you would know best. You alway have the option of increasing.
