Oils keep hydration in, but they don’t actually hydrate - that is why they are recommended for application after a moisturizer. However if your skin is sufficiently hydrated (from water internally or externally) they help prevent dehydration.

Oils alone cannot hydrate. Hydrate means moisture, specifically water. They can seal in moisture already applied, though.

There are, of course, blends of moisture and oil.

No. Oils don't hydrate. Humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid are what hydrate. They put moisture in the skin. But it just evaporates out again if you don't seal it in with a good moisturizer.

Oils provide one aspect of protection for the skin that seals in the moisture. But you also need ceramides and cholesterol. That is what makes up the "lamellar" structure of your outer skin layer. You need to fortify that structure to really keep moisturized.

So basically I'm saying that oils are great, but not enough. Supplement oil with some CeraVe as well if you are dry.

Oils prevent water loss from the skin by coating it with a hydrophobic barrier...it seals in moisture.

This may be a really dumb question, but if you apply oil immediately after showering or washing your face, that that trap in the hydration from the water? I do normally apply rosehip seed oil right immediately after I get out of the shower when my skin is still softened by the water and steam and I’ve thought my skin was well hydrated...thanks for the input.
