Don't Know Where Else To Go

I am at my wits' end. Even though I'm 71, I still have oily skin.

Here's the issue:

I cannot find a moisturizer that will not produce even more slick and shine in a matter of minutes. I have tried Clinique, Cetaphil, Cerave, Simple, June Jacobs (facial cleanser & toner) w/o moisturizer, iT, LG, Borghese, JM's argon oil ad infinitum. Am wondering about Tatcha, but oddly enough - like Clinique's formula for oily skin - I get dry patches and itchiness and some reviews claim the same issue when using Tatcha.

If I don't apply moisturizer, oftentimes I'm itching all day due to dryness esp around my mouth & on my cheeks. Eventually, flakiness sets in. Such a vicious cycle.

What's a gal to do??? Recs please.

Though I no longer have oily skin mine is dry and sensitive now. Sixty next month attest to skin changing with age. Considered checking hormone levels. This can often attribute imbalances in our bodies. Good luck!

I know you probably didn't want to read this but maybe a dermatologist can help you. Sounds like you have come to the end of your road and have very few options left.

My friend swears by Oil of Olay. Another thought would be a moisturizer used with a powder-based foundation. Not a liquid or cream. IT Celebration Foundation would be my recommendation. I understand your frustration. Good luck.😊

Powder-based foundation exascerbates the flakiness - and I exfoliate regularly. Thanks for your input. Will give Oil of Olay a shot. Why not? The only thing left that I haven't tried. (The "Oil" makes me wonder....)

@pommom- before getting to the moisturizing step, I'd address your cleanser and anything else you're using within your skincare routine. If you are using oil-free products in your cleanser and toner, those can look like they've worked immediately after cleansing, but they actually cause your patchy dryness and send a signal to your brain to "send oil" to repair them. The problem is that the oil doesn't arrive just at specific places. It then becomes a vicious cycle. I used to have a similar problem with combo skin well into my 50's. Several years ago I tried a cleansing oil (Dr. Young Camellia Deep Cleansing Oil - bought on Amazon - similar concept to Tatcha only more reasonably priced) and in a very short time, my oil production normalized. It's still my favorite cleansing oil today. I do prefer a lighter weight lotion consistensy for an AM moisturizer but am able to use something thicker at night without a problem. My AM moisturizer is Mizon Collagen Power Lifting Emulsion and my PM is Skinn Pep 40.

I am 63 and my skin is still oily I swear by Skin Cecuticals B5 Gel, there is a dupe you can get on Amazon, this was given to me by my dermatologist years ago

just got back from a long-awaited derm appt this morning.

Have you tried these?

“CETAPHIL DermaControl foam wash and oil-absorbing moisturizer.” Nearly every place is out of the moisturizer in this town, maybe it is good.

I have been having the same issues: extremely sensitive; seemingly very dry and scaly on the surface. When I add any creams/moisturizers it just makes the scales worse or it makes my face break out.

RX: minocycline and elidel

he is also going to do a scalp biopsy in 6 weeks and thinks possibly my thyroid may be involved.

Hello... I am close in age with the same issues and have tried most of the products you mentioned. I now use Philosophy's Take a deep Breath. It is perfect for skin like ours. I think you would be happy with this.

The way you are describing your skin (oily, shiny) and then (dry and itchy) after using products for oily skin-I think you have dry skin not oily skin.

When your skin is dry(doesn't mean that it is flaky or itchy to begin with) just kind of greasy and shiny.

Your skin is over producing oils to compensate for the dryness but you are creating a worse problem by using products for oily skin.

Try products for normal-dry skin for a week, consistently and see if this helps. Oil of Olay Regenerist in the red jar is a good moisturizer and also has an option for sensitive skin if you need it but I like the regular one. Use it morning and night.

If your skin gets dry when you don't wear moisturizer, you have dry skin, not oily. I agree that you should stop using anything for oily skin.

You also sound dehydrated. I'd concentrate on rehydrating your skin, and being gentle to the acid mantle, using gentle cleansers--not ones for oily skin. Be wary of overexfoliating because going overboard also removes the barrier that keeps good moisture in your skin.

Try using La Roach Posay you can find it at CVS or on their web site not to expensive and I have the oilest skin in the world and I am 54 but it helps alot and I have tried everthing from high to low and my Derm. suggested it so here we are today not very well know but high quality

I am 74 and had very oily skin when I was younger. I still get oily patches but some dry areas, too. I serendipitously found the solution. I shop at Sephora and every year on my birthday I get to chose a gift. Several years ago someone here on the boards suggested Sephora's Fresh brand Seaberry facial oil. That year one of the gifts offered was the Seaberry facial wash, rose mask and a nice sized little bottle of the facial oil. I tried it and was thrilled. The facial wash is soy based and has a rose fragrance (not heavy) and the oil has a light fragrance. I used the mask till it was gone and have not repurchased. I have repurchased the facial wash and the facial oil. I use both of them morning and evening. I don't wear foundation most days since I retired. If I do wear foundation I don't use the oil. Try Sephora. They have been very generous with their samples and give it a try. Since using it I don't get the flaky patches and I don't get the heavy oily patches either. HTH

I swear by Paula’s Choice products. Look at her products online and talk to a specialist at their 800 number. Her products are sold at Nordstrom’s and for a while on QVC. I always order online and receive my products within 3 days at latest. The company is excellent regarding credit for return of product that caused irritation or other reaction. I find their website to be very user friendly to determine which product is right for my skins condition. I have been using this brand for 15+ years in addition to OTC products that Paula recommends. Read beautypedia.com (this is created by PC) reviews of all retail products. PC always has sale and sometime free shipping. I find the prices similar to some drugstore items and less than department store cosmetics.

I couldn’t agree more on the cleansing oil! What people don’t understand

is it’s water soluable. And the best eye makeup remover EVER! I’ve used

Tatcha but my very favorite is from DHC. (Amazon or DHC.) My combo

skin completely balances out. I love Philosophy but their cleanser can’t

hold a candle to cleansing oil MELTING every single drop of makeup off

without ANY rubbing! Great suggestion👍🏻

Lots of good points of view in answer to my quandry.

I will back off products for oily skin. As far as being dehydrated, I drink on an average of 4 qts of water every day at a minimum.

Exfoliate 2x/week with Murad extra fine formula. Very gentle.

@pommom , I really know your pain. There is little help, or advice for OILY skin problems.

I also have oily skin and went through the cycle of using creams that increased oil production, and the over-cleaning to deal with the increased oil, the harsh cleaning caused flaking. So, I added more cream, got MORE oil, and cleansed more, and got MORE flakes, and around and around I went. I used everything I could think of! This was for years.

I started using an oil free CC, the only face MU I use, and Tacha’s water based cream, just a tiny bit AM & PM. After a week or so I no longer had flakes, and didn’t need BHA, etc. to deal with flakes.

I also went to a charcoal soap with no strong additives because I would still have an occasional blocked pore, also added a mild toner. These changes have worked wonders for me.

Thank you to my derm who helped me break the cycle! He gave me no prescriptions, nor did he recommend any products by name. He gave me Information about ingredients, explained how to use them, and told me what would help and what would hurt, which means I can shop in my own price range, and am not lost if a product changes, or is discontinued. What a gift!

Thanks for the tip. I will definitely ask for a sample. I failed to mention that on top of oily skin, it is very sensitive so I stay away from products containing essential oils and fragrances.

The moisturizer I'm currently using is for normal-oily skin so seems like I need to go the other route. I've used O of O in the past, but not in the red jar and, yes, I would definitely need the sensitive skin formula. Many thanks.
