Did you color your hair lighter after a certain age

I usually color my hair dark blonde,which is almost brown. Lately,I think it makes me look older. I think I might have to go medium blonde or lighter now. My grey is around the temples and front,it's not a nice looking grey. My eyebrows are black. What do you ladies think?

No. Have grey around the temples. Will let my hair grey naturally. No desire to ever dye my hair.

No. Been coloring my hair since the age of 11. Finally just let it go and my hair is not light all by itself naturally. I have silver hair and didn't know it.

I thought about going lighter but decided to keep my medium brown color with added highlights & lowlights, it looks really nice & something different for me as I begin to gray at 68.

My natural color is a darker blonde. I've been doing highlights and lowlights for years. I'm sure I have grey mixed in there, but I can't see it. There have been times when I've gone heavier on the highlights but lately I've been having it more balanced between the light and dark. As we get older, I think too dark or too blonde isn't flattering. You stylist can lift that dark blonde/brown and put a lighter shade on you that will soften your features. She can probably lighten your brows too, if you're willing to keep up with them.

@MoJoV .... I'm 64, but don't have a lot of gray and only color where i need color, which is around the hair line and the crown of my head. I have naturally dark brown hair, and use a medium golden brown color, which is just a bit lighter than my natural color. It give me a highlighted effect. At some point... when I have a lot more gray, I'll have to decide whether to go lighter, or even gray. For now, I can't imagine me in any color but what it is.

Unless you feel that your natural color isn't flattering anymore, it sounds like you could do the same thing.... use something close to your natural color where you need color.

@MoJoV, to actually answer your question instead of suggesting you go gray, I wonder about your color. Is it multi-dimensional or one solid shade?

I have my roots colored to match my natural hair color, which was a light brown with some blonde in it. My stylist uses just one shade, but somehow (maybe the sun) it looks varied.

Maybe if yours is solid, you get a shade or two lighter weaved in a bit. If you don't go to a stylist, maybe try just one shade down from what you're using. Anything lighter might wash you out and also not go so well with your black eyebrows.

I’m no longer coloring my roots so it won’t be long and I’ll be gray all over. I’m trying to get to the point as I age to have less maintenance but still look nice.

I started going grey when I was 11; it runs in my family. I am extremely pale with greenish brown eyes and almost black hair. My hair is pure silver-white around my face (about an inch worth) but....in other parts of my hair, the color coming in is a dirty-dentures yellow grey OR strawberry blond grey. It's bizarre. The entire back part of my head has zero grey.

I tried on wigs in a lighter brown shade; all white; blond; the shades that my hair is turning and honestly? I looked like ******. NOBODY said the lighter shades were flattering on me. Long story short: we dye my hair the dark brown all over but don't touch the 1inch of silver framing my face. It's striking and I love it; compliments come quite frequently.

Many who work in color/makeup have commented that when you're very pale, you need some contrast and since my brows and eyelashes are dark, having light colored hair just washes me out. I don't know what I'll do (early 50's here) but I know that on many women who I see who are much older, the darker shades look harsh. That saddens me as I don't want to look like that. Then again, as long as THE PERSON is happy with what they see in the mirror, does it really matter what anyone thinks?

Being honest, it kinda does to me.

No, my hair’s mostly brown with some gray hair. My Dad’s hair was like this until he died in his early 70’s and I think mine will be, too.

Yes. Rule of thumb as we age you should go lighter with your hair color. If it is using more highlights or hair coloring or letting your grey grow out. This summer I added more highlights to my auburn hair and my family loved it.

i've had salt & pepper hair since my 40's......i'm 68 and much more salt! i wear my hair short and layered and have never dyed it....been very happy with my natural look....

I have Asian black hair. Never had any gray. I've toyed with the idea of getting highlights or even going entire shade lighter all over but I'm not sure that would look right on me because of my ethnicity. I think it would look rather fake, because truthfully, most Asians have black or very dark brown hair naturally.

My natural hair is an ashy light/medium brown with no gray. I find the most flattering for me is to have a mix of brown lowlights and blonde highlights. I tend to go with a little brighter blonde in the summer. It's a balance between the lowlights and highlights. If I go with too many lowlights, I think I look older, especially because I'm fair. If I have too many highlights, my hair starts to be too all-over blonde which I really don't like.

I'd suggest talking to your stylist. She/he should be able to pick out a flattering shade for you that's a little lighter than your base color and that goes with your skin tone. You could start with some highlights and see how you like them.

@MoJoV Can you try on wigs at a store near you? If not, you should wear the color the compliments your skin tone. A lot of women do not look good in blonde as it washes them out. You may want to lighten your eyebrows if they are truly black. Rule of thumb == what was your natural color? Go one shade lighter. I stopped coloring my hair and love my salt & pepper look. My hair is healthy and shiny.

I have been coloring my hair since I was 15. I have been every shade of blond and have no idea what my real color is except it is a dark dirty blond.

I have gray as it starts to grow out and I freak. In summer I go lighter and in winter I go warmer.

I will not go down with this ship! I will fight aging till I die! Uggg

Not lighter but warmer. My real color is a dark ashy brown with patches of white - washes me out. So I dye it medium natural brown - which picks up just enough gold/red coloring in my hair to warm it up.

I started lightening my medium brown hair when I saw my first grey - I was around 50.

After professional frosting for several years, I started full head lightening. I’ve been using Féria #91 for yesrs. it’s a beige blonde shade and gives me the color and shading that I like.

@Katcat1 I’m so hesitant to open the pandora’s box of “stop coloring hair, go natural to grey/white/silver, see silky, shiny, healthy hair, ya da ya ga”, BUT besides that reason, complexion/ coloring lightens and naturally adjusts itself as we age for the grey hair we’re intended to have. I had reached that point with my dark brown hair that no lightening to any shade of brown (cool or warm), highlights, etc. brightened my dull complexion. Every shade washed me out. In fact, the high contrast of almost black hair against my almost white skin what was what I needed, but was harsh & aging. White hair was the answer...high contrast (don’t know how to explain that since almost white on white). My stylist said that to think of it more as dramatic than contrast. One week before I left for Seattle, I was thinking I could use a little trim, but was busy getting other things taken care of. Just cut a cut at my daughter’s salon. What freedom to not plan “if I get my roots colored now, they’ll need coloring as soon as I get back, but she may not have an opening that week.....”. The appts. spaced for my roots depending on where I was going, or could I wait a few days so it’ll look fresh for a certain event 2 months away.... neurotic.
