E.L.F. Primer Deception?

Has anyone else seen the Facebook video from someone named Stephane Marie, about her experience with E.L.F. primer? She ran out of product well before she anticipated, like within 3 weeks, using only a half pea size amount daily. One thing led to another and she took the container apart, only to find that there's a mini container within a container, within the outer shell. It turns out, the total amount of primer in the container was slightly less than a tablespoon. Granted, the labeling on the package does say .47 oz., but visually the container looks like it's holding a lot more. I think she paid something like $8.00 for the package which makes it very expensive in the long run. Moral of the story, be a label reader.

@JeanLouiseFinch Wow, I guess that proves you still "get what you pay for," (or less). That's actually less than you get in most eye serums. Yes, we should always check product weight (I always do), but that company was obviously trying to be deceptive.

I went to lunch with a friend a while back and she pulled out her primer and took it apart and I could not believe what little was in there.

yes, I had used the ELF primer and it's a tube within a tube. I thought that was strange! And then, to make matters worse, the pump stopped pumping product out. I'll stick to my Mally primer

I didn't like the ELF primer - clogged my pores. I also thought it didn't last very long. I went back to my trusty No 7 brand - I love those products.

It's like anything else, most of the public will not read anything on the packaging and rely on visual perception of a product BUT they will also drop the product once they figure out they are being manipulated.

@JeanLouiseFinch Yes, many products are deceiving. I had that issue w/ IT BYE BYE UNDEREYE CONCEALER in tube. I know they say to only use a drop, but the starting a new tube by pressing from the end, most of the tube is empty!

I think this is not as uncommon as you may think. Cosmetics, hygiene products and even food products use packaging to trick the consumer. This has been done for years.

Eh, much ado about nothing. The AMOUNT is right there on the package. To think you're going to get a YEAR'S worth of product well from that amount....that's on you. It's an air pump so a tube isn't necessary (another thing she isn't aware of).

But, the one thing that needs to be known about HER is she heads up a MLM sales group that sells beauty products, of which one item is a primer.

Yeah, no bias there.

Oh really, @SahmIam? Where did you find that out? Unless she has another business page, I don't see anything on her personal one. I don't necessarily think she was expecting a year's worth of product, but from the looks of the container more than three weeks. Like I said in my OP, we need to be label readers.

@JeanLouiseFinch There's a YouTuber who does reviews of products as well as a weekly news report on what's happening in the beauty industry; VERY well done. She's a teacher who left the profession due the nightmare teaching has become (she has videos on that as well).

Her "report" on this was in my feed early this morning; that's where I heard about it plus the comments section offered quite a bit of info when Jen thumbed up (she only does that if she knows it to be true); another reason I watch her reports/reviews.

The woman going on about the product made her facebook page private; if you can get into it, you can gather more info.

The YouTuber mentioned is JenLuvsReviews.

EDITED TO ADD: THe name of the MLM is found via the video Jen does. Go down to comments. Also, the retail price for the primer is $5. ELF runs 50% sales quite often so that mkes it $2.50. When I've ordered from them during their sales, I haven't had to pay tax or shipping due to the amount purchased. The primer is also often a free product when during ELF's promo sales (which they also do quite often).

OK...I'll look. Stephanie Marie does point out on her page that the current design of the container is different from the one she originally purchased a year ago. I think the "deception" point is the visual doesn't match up with the stated weight. True the weight is there, but many people don't read and just grab, making an assumption of what they're getting.

I see this type of misleading visuals quite often. Just recently I bought an item that, according to the pic on the website, looked like I would be getting more than one of that item...in other words, the pic showed five and the sale was for only one which was clearly stated in their description that I neglected to read. Deliberate?? Who knows but they got my money anyway.

@SilleeMee and others: this whole thing of deceptive advertising is just...wrong and yet, it's also the norm. I read the fine print on everything because of an ebay lawsuit long (18 years or so) ago on Judge Judy.

The buyer purchased a luxury watch for a very good price. Not for dollars but a good, fair price based on the almost thousand it would have cost in the store. When the package arrived, all that was in the box was a PICTURE of the watch; the same picture that was shown on ebay. The buyer took the seller to court because neither ebay nor paypal found the seller to be in the wrong. Why?

As per the seller, it CLEARLY states that ebay auction is for the PICTURE of the watch, not the watch. It was ALL in the wording. That seller had made big bucks using that scheme and yet, it was legal due to the wording he used. They showed that ebay ad (that was STILL up and people were STILL buying) on air. Judge Judy said people will see you for the snake you are and he just smiled and shrugged and said he'd already made a lot of money so no big deal.

I NEVER forgot that.

There's a couple of issues going on here, how does an airless pump dispenser work and packaging that is deceptive so that you think you are getting more product than you actually get.

When an airless pump works to dispense product the vacuum created by the pump pulls the bottom stopper upwards. Whe the container is empty the bottom stopper will have been pulled to the top of the bottle by the vacuum suction. An Elf primer bottle being a bottle in a bottle disguises this. And the bottle looks bigger than it is. 14ml is half an ounce, that is not much product, it's about the standard size though for an eye cream. The demo of putting product into a bottle with the bottom stopper at the top already is inaccurate. The bottom stopper should have been pushed back down to the bottom of the bottle.
