Merle Norman powder base does. It is like a colored zinc oxide with med to full coverage. It stays on all day and never looks cakey.

Many foundations and powders contain sunscreen, but is it enough for daily protection?

By Susan P. Clark

From the WebMD Archives

You want to prevent wrinkles and skin cancer, so you are dedicated to wearing sunscreen. But coverage looks shiny or chalky, especially under makeup.

Many foundations and other makeup products offer a built-in sun protection factor (SPF). Is that your smartest beauty solution? Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD, says giving in to that temptation would be a mistake.

"Makeup does not provide enough coverage," she says. "You need seven times the normal amount of foundation and 14 times the normal amount of powder to get the sun protection factor on the label. No one does this."

So can you marry makeup and sunscreen in your routine and still look good? Yes, if you follow these steps.

1. Select the proper sunscreen.

Before you step in front of the bathroom mirror, find a sunscreen that offers enough protection. The Skin Cancer Foundation advises people to use a moisturizer containing broad-spectrum sunscreen (which means it blocks both UVA and UVB rays) with an SPF rating of at least 15. Ingredients such as zinc oxide, avobenzone (Parsol 1789) or ecamsule (Mexoryl), combined with octocrylene and avobenzone work best with makeup and provide broad spectrum sun protection

I cannot stand the smell or the feel of sunscreen on my face so as long as i am not at pool or beach or outdoors for prolonged amount of time, I just rely on my powder foundation for protection.

I wear a moisturizer with a sunscreen in it everyday so I do not care if my foundation has it or not. If I am going to be outside on our boat all day, I use a full on sunscreen even on top of my moisturizer.

No, foundation alone does not have adequate protection from UV rays, even the foundation that touts it has SPF has is downfalls because applying it correctly would mean compromising the cosmetic part of the product. In other words, you will look dreadful if you apply enough foundation to give you adequate protection from the sun.

I love Neutragena Ultra Sheer Liquid Sunscrreen, SPF 70. Does not smell. You can not feel it on your skin. Does not have a "white-ish" cast and does not interfere with makeup application.

Unfortunately, if you want sunscreen protection...it is separate product to gain effective protection. This has been known for some time, just consumers don't like the feel/look of the effective products.

No. I always apply Elta MD SPF 40 or Neutragena 30 or 55 UNDER my foundation during the day. Of course, SPF applied to face, neck and declotage (sp?)

This topic has been reviewed here many times in the past. Absolutely do not rely on your makeup for sun protection. There are so many newer products that have come out recently. Just to name a few Farmacy Green Screen, Volition Prismatic Luminizing SPF, Coola Full Spectrum 360 Drops, Elemis Marine Cream SPF 30, Super Goop Unscreen. Elemis is pricey and was the Beauty IQ Steal a few days ago. However, this has a newer technology that only a small amount is needed rather than slathering a dollop of it all over the face.

Angie of Hot&Flashy just did a video on this topic today. She favors mineral sunscreens as do I. If I'm not going to wear makeup, I wear Paula's Choice Skin Recovery moisture lotion with SPF30 on my face, neck and chest. If I'm wearing makeup, I wear Cerave PM on my face and then put Australian Gold tinted w/SPF 50 over it. It acts like a wonderful primer. She recommended this product last year and talks about it at the end of today's video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jITtkUBXGk

I've had terrible reactions to sunscreen so I don't bother with it. One that I tried actually dissolved my nail polish!

My foundation offers protection and I avoid prolonged exposure. I wear a hat if I'm going to be in the sun.

So far, so good ...

I totally agree with those who say a separate sunscreen produt is the best protection you can use. It really is as simple as we are not going to apply enough color cosmetics on our face to make the small amount in those products effective. It's a well known fact that's not difficult to research, yet as long as consumers think they are protecting their face wearing makeup with sunscreen, the companies will continue to market that one can get adequate sunscreen from a foundation (be it liquid, powder, or by any other name: tinted moisturizer, CC cream, etc.)

I'll take Neutrogena Clear Face (30 or 55) as my favorite among the true sunscreen products.
