I get my roots professionally colored every five weeks, use retin a/sunscreen, etc., use the Nuface and a light therapy device, and keep current with makeup and clothing. I keep my weight at a lower range for my height. I must be doing something right, because my new doctor told me to keep up what I'm doing, because I look 10 years younger than I am. He said, "I see a lot of patients, so I'm a good one to judge." Talk about making my day.

That being said, how liberating and free it would feel to get out of the grind of coloring and fixing my hair, getting it cut short for easy maintenance, and not having to wear makeup. How wonderful to just be able to drop whatever I'm doing and walk out the door to go somewhere without the hour and a half (or more) it takes to "look good." I confess that there are sometimes I don't go somewhere or plan a lunch date with someone just because I don't want to have to go through fixing up.

@Ainhisg An hour and 1/2 ? That’s a lot of time to look “good”. Any way to eliminate a few steps?

@Ainhisg - What about going to the grocery store, etc.

Are you able to go out to places like that without makeup? Places like that, I feel fine without wearing anything, but sunscreen. Perhaps you can take baby steps and try going to a few low-keyed places not made and see how it feels?

Sometimes I think oh how nice it would be to do that. But it just isn't me. I still color my hair, wear makeup and use my skincare. I love it!!!!! My sister in law is the same way, and she is 66...I do have a friend though that is 64 and she no longer colors her hair and it is so pretty, but she has a youthful face and still wears a light makeup...She said once she retired, she wan't going to spend the money to keep her hair colored.....

I seriously don't think I could give up all together, but I wish I could. I'm dangerously close to throwing in the towel.

I've always cared how I look, but I wouldn't say I fanatically take care of myself, like some women do.

My weight fluctuates, although I'm pretty trim. I had several cosmetic procedures around age 50 (I'm now 70), and my hair which was always very good (thick and healthy, slow to gray) well, I would sometimes go to the ends of the earth to get good cuts, sometimes I would let it grow long and avoid hairdressers. I love makeup and use a ton of products.

But, time is really taking it's toll recently, and I'm just getting tired of it all. I really wish I cared less.

I'll probably keep trying all sorts of things, though, because as my mother said toward the end of her life " you can't give up, you have to keep trying." She meant all things, not just appearance related.

I use some kind of cleanser to wash my face. Depending if it seems to be on the dry side or more oily side will determine what I use that day. I put a light cream on after washing.

I only use a liquid makeup on my t zone as that tends to be red. I use that if I leave the house. I wear glasses, so I don't bother with eye makeup.

i stopped coloring my hair when I stopped working. It is more white than gray. I keep it short, to me it looks more stylish.

No, I personally couldn't. I have a skin regimine I attempt to stick to. When I quit using retin a, and Perricone neuropeptide cream, I can tell a big difference. I have yet to find an eye cream that I feel makes a huge differenec, but I'm still looking.

I color my hair, like to go to a few different places for certain treatments.

I may not look any better to anyone else, but these things make me feel better on the inside.

I say if women are happy doing nothing, thats fine. I'm just not.

Also, some women, like my mother in law, look great with grey hair. There is a poster on here who has quit coloring her hair and posted photos, her hair is beautiful, imo.

I don't worry about what others do or don't do....I just do my thing and enjoy their company. I am only in my forties but I don't plan on stressing too much about aging...it happens to us all and there is only so much I can do to prevent it without spending tons of time and money, which I refuse to do.

I think the most useful things we can do, anti-aging wise, is to eat well and exercise, stress less, have fun and enjoy life ....and wear sunscreen.

To me, those arei the most important ways people can take care of themselves....much moreso than tons of creams, dying your hair, cosmetic procedures and/or wearing a bunch of makeup. When you are happy and healthy on the inside, it shows on the outside.

Oh and I'm not sure why going gray and wearing their hair below their shoulders is considered not taking care of themselves. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it isn't or it is a bad thing. To each their own!

To each their own!

@ValentinaBon

Forty is a baby. My best years were my thirties and forties. Still looked pretty good in my fifties and sixties as far as aging, but it catches up with you from about mid-seventies. Nature just takes over and everything "falls."

I don’t think I could stop trying to look as good as I can for my age or trying to be as healthy as I can. At least when going out. I do love my no makeup days at home though.😊

Nope. That said, I support a woman in anything she chooses to do when it comes to her look, style, ageing, etc. It's her choice. It's her body. I wouldn't want anyone to tell me I should do this or that so I am certainly not going to do that or think that of anyone else.

You go, Sister. And go proudly. : )

I don't think anything ages a person more than gray hair or hair that is colored an obviously false color like bright red or dark brown/black. I wish I didn't care about aging, but I do. I have always been considered very pretty, and this aging thing has been much harder on me than I would have ever dreamed.

No, it would be hard for me to just let go.

I use good skin care, have my hair colored and wear makeup. I want my husband to be proud of me and I want to be proud of myself.

My sister stopped coloring her hair or wearing ANY makeup and it has aged her at least ten years. Seeing this was enough for me to continue.

Yep. I could...almost there.

I believe a strong, supple, healthy body is far more important

than cosmetic anything. That will instantly make one younger

mentally/physically. My time, energy & money tends to

fall in line with those values, as well.

Always wonder...the women tending to themselves....

who are they trying to influence?

Seems we have more Positive Messages in our world today,

to be confident is met with like-minded people. Easier today

than years go

If we lived in a world of no mirrors, would any of this matter?

I hadn’t always believed that...I wore the makeup, bought lots of

expensive skincare, etc....then I woke up one day & realized

I’m pretty without all the fuss.

Whenever I see a young 20yr old, putting mountains of makeup on,

I have to think, ‘your skin is probably the more beautiful & flawless

it will ever be...and you’re covering up with makeup!”

Reminds me of that Rod Stewart song:

I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was younger.
I wish that I knew what I know now
When I was stronger.

And ‘younger’ could be 40 yrs ago or....yesterday.
