There are little hairs standing straight up and it looks silly!

Someone told me that it was due to wearing hair up in a clip. I do this around the house most everyday.

Can that really be the reason? I didnt think it was due to the breaking is around the part.

@CherryHugs As others have stated it very well could be hair clips causing the breakage. Also take your comb and brush into consideration. These seemingly harmless tools can sometimes be culprits related to hair breakage. If you aren't using one already try a soft bristle brush and a comb with rounded teeth (and by all means a wide tooth comb for use on wet hair). Then of course your hair care products cannot be ignored. You may be aided by using products designed for fragile/breaking hair. These products can sometimes be a bit richer and creamier than what you normally use, but the added moisture helps the hair strands regain and retain elasticity, thus less susceptible to breaking. Nick Chavez's Mesquite line of products fall nto the category of hair care products I'm referring to.

Maybe your hair is not breaking off but rather falling out at the root and what you are seeing are the new hairs growing back which will be most noticeable where you part your hair. I can't say for sure unless I see your hair up close. If the new hairs are blunt or brittle and frayed at the ends then mostly likely it's from breakage. But if the new grow is delicate, like baby hairs, then you may have gone through an episode of hair loss, not breakage. And it quite possibility could be both at the same time.

I agree with @SilleeMee . What you are seeing is more likely than not new growth. especially with straight hair the new hairs will stick straight up as they come in.

Hair grows and sheds in cycles. Typically there is a growth phase, a rest phase and then the hair loss or shed. At any time you will lose hairs, as others are growing. Of course age, hormones or even HRT, certain health issues like PCOS and exposure to some medications and cancer therapies will throw off the process.

I have short wispy wiry hair coming in. I color but I suspect it's the new growth of grey hair

Yes, hair breakage can be caused by hair clips or ponytail holders, especially metal ones, and by clipping or pulling hair back too tightly.

I use jaw clips, scrunchies, or Invisibobbles, which don't pull my hair out or break it. Invisibobbles are the ponytail holders that look like an old phone cord.

Hair breakage can also be caused by too much protein in hair products. Using a deep conditioner with protein too often did it for me many years ago. It took me several months to fix the issue, but I was able to do it. Here's some info on protein overload and what to do to fix it: http://pandhsalon.com/protein-buildup/

It mentions the strand test, but doesn't tell you how to do it. Take a wet strand of recently shed hair and pull on it from both ends. If it stretches before snapping, you may be fine. If it snaps without stretching, you may have too much protein in your routine.
