I currently get a perm about once a year. My hair sucks it up, I'm done in the minimal time, and it never falls out. That curl is with me until it gets cut off. Luckiy, I have just enough natural wave in my hair that it blends well with the growing out perm. That being said:

When I was in college, like lots of girls, I wanted the Farrah look. My fiance at the time took me to the hairdresser in his one-horse town in MS. First thing they did was cut off a bunch of air because they seemed to think long hair wouldn't perm. Then, they left it on the full amount of time because, once again, I had long hair (even though they had just cut a bunch off of it). Needless to say, I ended up with helmet hair. I never got my Farrah hair either.

Bridgegal's post re: new style permanents made me remember my childhood experiences from the late 50's and wondered if anyone else had funny memories. I always had thick, wavy hair and Mom couldn't control it. She would get a friend to give me my Toni "Tonette" perm in August before school would start. I swear it was always the hottest day and the smells were yucky. This process took all day and I just wanted to go out to play and not sit with rollers and a plastic cap on my head! The end result would be a huge headful of bouncy curls and my beret would pop off in mass and land in the next pew! The only part I liked was the free set of paper dolls that came inside the Tonette box!

Anyone else have stories?

I am not sure when - I guess the late 70s, perms were "in stye". So I decided to get my first perm. Well, I did not care for it one little bit. So as soon as I got home, I decided to wash my hair. OH MY! My hair blew up and was wild. I had night school that night. And I did not know what to do. I stuck a scarf on my head but I could not get the front of my hair to calm down. I swear the hair in front was sticking out at least 6 inches from my head.

I never got another perm. I didn't care about what was in style.

When I was a little girl in the 50's my mom wanted me to look like Shirley Temple but I had hair straight as a stick so a perm was the answer. We went to a nearby salon & they had this contraption that looked like a dryer but the big metal helmet on it had built in hair rollers hanging down, they put a solution on my hair, put my hair in the rollers & the big metal helmet was lowered on my head, the air from it was so hot & the rollers so tight I cried. The results were absolutely horrific & that was the end of my Shirley Temple makeover...except for the Shirley Temple scarf my mom insisted I wear to cover the nightmare hairdo!

My mom gave me "Toni" perms when I was a kid so it seemed perfectly natural for me to give myself perms when the super curly style was popular in the 70's-80's. (I still have a shoebox full of perm rods in my linen closet)

I hated the smell and the mess, but did it for the sake of beauty....... (add manical laughter here). One day I said "enough" and let it go straight. The funny thing is, as I've gotten older, my hair has got some natural curl to it. It gets curlier and curlier every year.

My Mom used to give me the hated - detested - tonette home perms every year before school started.

I'm so glad that now a days we just pretty much can go with what is natural for our hair. My hair is poker straight and I wash it and blow it dry and comb - done. My dear cousin has the curliest hair you ever saw - same as me - wash it , she lets her's air dry, and styles it with some mousse. every once in a while I'll go on a bender and try to curl my hair with less than successful results, or she'll try to straighten hers . We're both happier when we go with what is natural.

Well, I had to have everything she had. My aunt put her hair on the little perm rods, mine on the larger ones figuring it wouldn’t curl it too much.

The phone rang and my Aunt talked and lost track of time......Guess I don’t have to tell you the rest. It was like a Lucy & Ethel story. My cousin’s hair was kinky beyond belief....didn’t even want to look in the mirror after seeing hers. I had a Diana Ross huge black wig looking head of hair on a tiny body staring back at me.

Everyone was laughing, but me. Off to the beauty shop for a very short haircut. I was miserable! It took at least a year for my hair to grow back and my natural curls to return.

When I was in my 20's I had fine straight hair. I use to go to a salon for a perm. I only wanted to get some body and a little wave to my hair, but it always came out too curly, hard for me to handle, frizzy and too curly. I wasn't getting the results I wanted and finally stopped getting them.

Perms make me think of the 80's when that look was in style. My hair is very thick and straight and I remember it taking hours for the hairstylist to roll my hair in the rods. The end result was big permed-looking curls with a head full of hair. Fast forward to the year 2000 - I had stopped perming my hair once the 90's arrived and started highlighting my brown hair with blonde highlights. It got to the point where I was more blonde than brunette. Well in 2000, I decided to get a perm with loose curls. The lady that had been highlighting my hair all those years did the perm - BIG mistake! The result was gummy hair that all broke off! It was terrible! I didn't know better, but she probably should have known better than to perm my hair with all the color in it. That was the last time I ever experienced a perm. Present day - I am now happy with my brunette straight hair, but I do put color in just to hide a few grey hairs.....
