Ulta Selling Returned Products?

I got an e-mail about this situation. Has anyone heard this before or now? Thanks

I was thinking if they do this, how many others places sell returned products.

I've returned items to an Ulta store but they only ask if I've used them? Yes/No.

They have never once opened an item to check so my guess is that it's possible.

Now I'm thinking who checks items returned in the mail?

Sephora does. I recent got an expensive hair product that had obvious been opened- box was damaged. The finial proof was there was someone else's hair on the item!!

I read an article yesterday about former Ulta employees that said that they were taught what to do do make a used item like lipstick, eye shadow, foundation stick, etc. look like it had never been used and then forced to put it back on the shelf (and products were not sanitized).

The article said that Ulta said they were investigating the claims.

I understand if things that aren't used are put back on the shelf but to think a lipstick might have been used and purposefully made to look new is maddening (and gross).

@VenturaHighway - who was your email from? Would you mind sharing it? I have just recently returned some items to Ulta and the Ulta employee opened the box and checked the palette inside, which makes sense, could you imagine if I had depotted the shadows and just returned the packaging?! Of course, I didn't do that. But I think it's good that she checked. The other 2 items I returned were in "clamshell" packaging and it was obvious that I had not opened those.

I took a serum back a couple yrs ago. Only tried it once and put it right back in the box. The sales girl looked at it, boxed it up and while i was browsing at other items I watched her put it right back on the shelf for resale.

Before seeing that I assumed maybe they used returns for demonstrations ?

I dont assume anymore.

@deja vu If anyone sees used products put back on shelves, call them on it and/or report to health inspectors in your area. That’s how staph infections and other yucky stuff (professional term) is spread!

You got an email from WHO ?

There's a big difference between a RETURNED product and a USED product.

If something was returned (unused) because they didn't want it, would you really expect them to just throw it out? Makes no sense to me. Why shouldn't they be able to resell it?

Yes there is a law against it. Hence why you arent allowed to sell used items on Ebay or amazon. Some try but if you get caught they will suspend your account.

I wonder if this a case based on the managers? Its gross and wrong. My store practically drills you when you return items. That said, I have seen people open up a new item off the shelf try it and put it back .... so disgusting.

Everyone sells returned products as long as they are in the condition they were sold in. No, it would be against the law to resell cosmetics I would think but gadgets, no.

I'm not surprised. I prefer to buy products that are shrink wrapped by the manufacturer and wary of products at stores that can be opened and used as a tester.

@jodicaI have seen women use the testers on their face, like eyeshadow. Or the worse, using the lipstick tester. At one Sephora I was at, they no longer had the testers for lipsticks.

Hmm .... I think you're serious. Well, if we're talking cosmetics, NO you shoudn't "try" it ..... the only retailer (I know of) that accepts used makeup returns is QVC.

If you want to "try" a cosmetic, walk into the nearest Ulta (or other B&M store) and use their testers. That's what they're there for.

I think almost all retailers accept used makeup/skincare nowadays. Sephora, Ulta, Macys, Nordstroms, CVS, Target, etc. You can't always test everything at the store, especially things like skincare, mascara, etc.

That's why I would rather buy make-up at a department store than a store like Sephora or Ulta that has everything out in the open. Some department stores might be bad, too, but I've never wondered about buying cosmetics that have been tried like I do in Sephora.

No, thank-you to trying testers. Other people use and touch them. Though places are getting careful about their testers.

I have watched a woman at the MAC counter use her brush on one woman and never cleaned it before using it on another woman.

This thread was to ask a question and see what other people thought. Not get in a p***ing contest on testers. I'm not stupid.

And you are wrong about retailers not taking back used products. There are many, if you aren't happy with a product, they will take it back.

And this woman that worked at Ulta, stated that they take back used products, clean them up and resell them.
