Fake Makeup

Another story on the national news last night about fake makeup. This is a big business on the East and West coasts mostly. Packaging and colors look identical to high-end brands, but ingredients are dangerous and unsanitary. These fakes are usually sold at discount markets like fairs or sidewalk shops, or online - not in brand-name stores. Ladies think they are getting a bargain, but end up with skin and eye infections, rashes, etc., that require medical treatment.

I know this has been discussed on here before - this is just a reminder.

And it's not just make-up. A few years back, there were reports of fake toothpaste on the shelves in some dollar chains -- no idea which chains or which brands or whether there was ever a follow up to that original story.

I'm very cautious about anything that actually goes into my mouth -- and because I already have so many eye issues, anything that goes near my eyes.

I've heard on the news to not buy beauty items from Amazon or eBay. These places are riddled with fakes.

@Sunshine Kate, I do agree about eBay. @Shelbelle and I often disagree politely about buying cosmetics and skincare from eBay. She recommends it often. I haven't been worried so much about fakes -- but am now after reading this -- as much as I am concerned about freshness.

I would buy from Amazon only if it's sold and fulfilled by Amazon and not a third-party seller.

Allure magazine says to buy directly from the brand's website in order to avoid getting the fake stuff and if you happen to buy a product from a reputable place like Sephora or Ulta then somehow find that it is a fake, you can take it back to that store for a refund....and leave a nice comment for your on-line review.

I have 2 teenage granddaughters. I buy them quality name brand makeup from QVC or Ulta.

But the one granddaughter is always on youtube watching those stupid how to's.

They have flawless skin but I keep telling them that if they use some of this .99 drug store stuff their nice skin will not look that way much longer.

Teenagers are notorious for 'sharing' makeup. I constantly am talking about how that is a no no....

Well, I don't have any problem buying that ".99 drug store stuff" because, seriously, who's going to fake the cheap brands? No profit there. Just because some brands are more expensive doesn't mean they're better quality.

I bought once fake parfum from some internet site. Never again. All my make up is only bought from the name stores , Sephora, ulta(nail polish), Q. But mostly I trust places like Bloomingdales, L& T, Nordstrom,etc.

Never dollar stores for food or make up. I like them for balloons, gift bags, aluminum trays,disposable Tupperware for guests to take home food.

Yes, Allure magazine did an article about fake cosmetics - the focus was basically on fake EL brands like MAC. The irony of that article was that there wasn't one EL branded ad in the whole beauty magazine. Off topic but I wonder how much longer Allure magazine will be around as they seem to have lost a lot of print advertisers.

Anyway I don't buy from Amazon oe Ebay and have never bought makeup from a flea market. I prefer drug stores over department stores too. Sephora is OK for some things but I would not use the testers either. I won't let sales people touch my face no matter what beauty store or makeup counter I visit.

@tototwo I go by my “retail rule”: If an LV bag or Rolex watch or expensive cosmetic item is priced too low, it makes me suspicious. Even if a bargain is to be had at a discount store from shampoo to cosmetics or perfume....No! How’d they end up there? Fake? Past the “use by” date?

I’d rather pay more and deal only with reputable retailers/online sights. I know what I’m putting on my skin is the real deal.

Some so called "bargains" are not worth it. I prefer to always buy my makeup from reputable cosmetic cos., dept. stores or drug stores. With the asbestos being recently in the news that it was in children's makeup is a scary thing.

I've used the same brand (Ardell demi-pixie) false eyelashes since I was in my 20's. I order them now from Ulta. Last year I checked Amazon and there was a great deal - almost too good to be true. I bought them. "FAKE"!!! They were paper thin and could not even get them to conform to my eye shape. All in the garbage. Lesson learned.

My all time favorite Eau de Parfum is "Shalimar". It is sold for $135 across the board at Nordstrom, Saks, Neimans.... you get the idea. A friend of mine loved the scent and proudly said she bought the same bottle of Shlimar for $56.00! Well when she got it, I got out my bottle and we tested. It was not Shalimar parfum at all, but a weak toilet water similar scent that dissipated quickly. Shalimar hangs around in my closet for a few days after it's on my clothes.

Amazon is known for these practices just like ebay. BEWARE, there's no free lunch on certain items. You get what you pay for.

PS. Even on days when Saks, etc has "spend $200, get $50.00 off" it always excludes the fine french parfum houses.

That flawless skin is fake as well, they use heavy filtering on their videos. Wayne Goss blew up a Bobby Brown video regarding filtering.

@TY Re: Allure magazine. I think eventually all print magazines will only be available online. Unfortunely, it’s more expensive to print them, more people are reading everything online, books & newspapers, too, and advertisers are pulling out knowing their ads aren’t bring in business they’re paying for.

Agree about not purchasing skincare/makeup from eBay, but Amazon will often state where the product is coming from...if a sight I’ve used in the past and a better price, I feel confident.

Also no testing cosmetics in any stores...department or Sephora, etc.! There have been case of serious infections transmitted through dirty lipstick/shadow testers (brushes, too) even in high end stores.

Bobbi Brown counter at Nordstrom sprayed alcohol & wiped across lipcolor I wanted to try. Other counters may follow. First time I’ve seen that. Was that adequate? Don’t know. Time will tell.

@tototwo Some brands or cosmetics that are more expensive are better. I find foundations are a better quality and more easily matched in dept. stores. I don’t trust .99 cent products near my eyes like liners or mascara. I do use drugstore L’oreal mascara, lipsticks, gloss, lotion/potions, etc.
