When to toss make up:?

Is there a recommendation on how long to keep powder eye shadow? I have heard/read that mascara should be tossed after 3 months, base after 6 months but wondered about powder based items. Any information appreciated.

Three years recommended but I have kept some longer depending on how often I use them.

Most cosmetics have a symbol on the packaging that states how long a product should be kept after opening.

When I worked and wore makeup daily, I purged eye shadows yearly.

If something smells or looks funny, I throw it out. Truthfully I get tired of something before I get close to using it up!

I keep mascara for 6mo. to a year depending how much I use. I have eye shadow from LG and bareminerals that I have for years. You didn't ask, but you can tell PDQ when liquid makeup is no good.

The general rule of thumb is that powder products last much longer than liquid products. I've had some for many years. Somtimes I will wipe the surface off with a tissue, but unless it has changed texture or has an odor, I keep it.

I also keep lipsticks for a long time as well, again going by texture and odor.

If it hasn't been used in a good while, I just pitch.

Except for Bare Minerals...those colors are so nice, even though I no longer use, but I really think they would make a great medium for water colors! (Just haven't gotten there yet.)

I toss mascara every 3 months...I use CoverGirl LashBlast, so it's not expensive.

I keep everything else til I either use it up or get sick of it, as long as it looks/smells normal.

@Gayle2 I have noticed powdered shadow, face powder in compacts, etc. may get an oily look on top. I’ve used my brow tweezers to scrape that portion off. There’s fresh product underneath. Of course, as others have said, I usually tire of the shades long before this happens & replace the shadow. That’s also why I stay from expensive, many shadow palettes...I always use only a few colors & they all end up getting tossed when a few are used up or get old.

I write the date I open all MU products on it with a sharpie marker and toss in 6 months no matter what they are. I do not buy a lot of MU products though as some here say they do.Basically - I have concealer, foundation, blush ,lipstick and mascara. That's all. I own 3 lipsticks only a peachy nude, a sheer red and a sheer pink.

I replace mascara every 3 months. Foundation I use up within 4 months. Eye shadow a year but most are used up within a year. Cream blush every 6 months. My lipstick collection ...I usually replace every 6 months. I carry a Chanel translucent powder in my purse that I replace yearly.
