philosophy - Cannot believe this

I'm having a reaction to Purity Made Simple. How is this possible?

When I used it the first time, I felt a slight sensation/irritation but dismissed it thinking it's a new product and my skin hasn't felt it before.

Used it again and I have to say, I'm going to return it.

I have reacted to purity too. I think I had a problem with the essential oils.

I was also not able to use the Purity cleanser. It felt great at first but made me break out.

I use to use Purity for some time. I am 50 years old and stopped using it about 2+ years ago. My face became dry and irritated when I used Purity. It was almost as if it sucked out all the good oil and moisture from my face. Because of this I would have small breakouts. I have used Cerave (not sure I am spelling correctly) and Aveeno Simply Ageless cleanser. I have had no issues since.

I've been a Noxema user since I was 14 years old...I'm now 54. I've always loved it for removing makeup and why switch to something else when you feel you have a good thing going?

All the hype from Philosophy about Purity Made Simple made me curious. So, I ordered the TSV from months ago that offered the Skin Tint makeup (which I love), Purity Made Simple, Hope in a Jar nighttime moisturizer, and a skin highlighter. I am on auto delivery so received two shipments to date. I tried the Purity and had some redness, but nothing major. I chalked it up to trying something new and figured it would go away once my skin adjusted...but it never did! So now I have an almost full bottle of Purity and one waiting in the wings from my latest auto delivery shipment. I was thinking I could gift the unopened one to someone for Christmas, but I'd hate to give them the gift of irritated skin!

@pommom, I stopped using over 2 years ago. It would irritate my eyes and burn so you are not alone. Give Cetaphil gentle cleanser a try which is in drugstores. Dermatologist tested.

It made my son break out horribly after tryihg it for a few days. Stopped using it and his face cleared up. Nothing else has caused this reaction, so it is not that he has sensitive skin. I believe that there is an ingredient in it now that can do this. This topic was discussed awhile ago on this forum and someone had the information..

If you can't use it on your face it makes a good make up brush cleaner. Wet the brush and work the purity in.

Purity works well on my face but sometimes it leaves some make up in and around my nose so I have to work at it a bit...but no irritation.

@pommom I am not a big fan of Philosophy in general. I also have a large botte to use up. What I;ve been doing is using it for my at home pedicures. It seems like your feet can take a lot more cleansers than the sensitive skin on your face. I've not had any problems, I hate to waste any product, especially at the expensive prices they are. Live and learn.

There are ingredients on that cleanser that are known irritants. I personally never saw a negative reaction on my skin but it didn't do a good job at removing my make-up at all.

@Lipstickdiva I now try to stay away from all products with a crazy long list of ingredients...especially known irritants. I stopped using Philosophy because HIAJ still had parabens after all these years & were making no effort to change the formula. That turned me off & on further checking, there were irritants in the shower gels (my skin seemed unusually dry) and Purity was burning my eyes.

Maybe the original formulas have been changed from the “doctor office safe products”.

I use Purity to wash my makeup brushes! It works very well and leaves the brushes soft. Just be sure to rinse well!

According to Beautypedia: This cleanser is overloaded with irritating ingredients. The fact that it is listed as “Best of Sephora” merely means that lots of Sephora customers are using a cleanser that is hurting their skin. Fragrant oils are abundant in this cleanser, and all of them contain volatile components that are irritating to skin. Philosophy also included black pepper extract, just in case the fragrant oils weren’t irritating enough.

Those of you who use this cleanser may not see the irritation it causes because most of the irritation is taking place under the skin, where collagen is being damaged and free-radical damage is being generated, but it is happening nonetheless. For the health of your skin and your beauty budget, please consider switching to a truly gentle water-soluble cleanser

You are not alone. I cannot use Purity Made Simple either. It breaks me out in tiny bumps immediately after use. I tried on two separate occasions, with the same results.

Purity also has parabans in it, so users should be aware. Only the name means purity.”

I'm another who's had a bad reaction to Purity. It gave me the most painful, deep pimples. I was sad to say goodbye to it beacuse I did like how it cleaned and left my skin feeling, but within two weeks of giving it up, my skin cleared right up.

I've never understood the fascination with philosophy.... but that's just me.

Yep, there is a reason why Beautypedia only gives it a one star rating. I had been using Philosophy skin care for about 2 years when I first found Paula Choice's reviews and skin care. I followed her suggestions, and my skin cleared right up. I do use other products besides hers, but I always look to the Beautypedia reviews. I also find her Ingredient Dictionary extremely helpful.

I am convinced that the formula changed on this product. In the past, I would swear by this cleanser. Best I had ever used. With my last order I've been disappointed that it no longer removes my eye makeup. Now I will try to find another product. Sad.

Not only can I not use Purity because it irritated my eyes, I can't use Hope in a Jar because the lavender in it makes my eyes water, every when I didn't put it near my eyes. Now that Coty has ruined the staying power of my beloved Amazing Grace, I guess my personal philosophy is now NO PHILOSOPHY!

I think there are a lot of people who are sensitive to Purity. I'm not one of them, but I chose to stop using it years ago after looking into the ingredient deck a bit. I still buy it occassionally (usually on Black Friday at Sephora when it's on sale) and use it in the summer to remove the deodorant from under my arms if I shower at night. I think it works well for that. I would also have no issue using it on my makeup brushes.
