Ok, so I'm getting older and have been on hormones to level mine out. My skin is dryer, as I was an oil slick with eczema before. I don't usually wear makeup to work. I had a meeting today and wore some of my usual stuff, but my mid-day I got a look in the bathroom mirror under fluorescent lighting and saw it looked like it was just sitting on my skin and was somewhat in small patches. I exfoliated last night, so there shouldn't have been any dry skin, but that is what it looked like closeup to the mirror. I wore foundation and set with powder, as what was my normal manner. I'm thinking I need to skip the powder and start with moisturizer, then primer, and then just foundation, as I usually moisturize at night and not am/pm. I don't know when I'll wear it again unless I just try some on my days off to see how it goes. I think this is what happens when dryer skinned people use a powder to set their foundation.

Thanks for the advice!

If I slack off and don't take care of my skin it becomes dry. It stays normal if I take care of it. I use the IT confidence in a cream. Their spa primer serum is super hydrating as a last step before makeup. I usually powder with the bye bye pores then a light dusting of the celebration foundation after using my cc cream. Find a good moisturizing foundation.

You need a PH balance cleanser and serums and the gentle exfoliation.

Liquid foundation and silicone probably aggravate your situation.

You should look to Isomers (highly recommend) or Tatcha in the Blue bottles.

Then try the baked cremes from Laura Geller.

I should have said that I use Cerave for cleanser and IT confidence in a cream for moisturizer at night. I use Paula's Choice antioxidant serum and vitamin C for my dark spots.

Maybe it could be that the exfoliator part is not doing a complete job. That is where I would start looking. It sounds like it to me from what you have described. @Tigriss

I think I'll try a different exfoliator tonight. It was a "gentle" one last night, so I'll crank it up a notch. I prefer to use a gentle daily exfoliator, but maybe that isn't enough on its own.

If anyone had told me I would be using the type of creams I use during the summer (heavy duty moisturizers) I would have laughed and said "no way!" Yet, I am. Come winter, it's even MORE important to hydrate my skin.

I know exactly what you mean. I use Dr. Gross pads daily, I due a heavy peel every Sunday, I do a hydrating mask on Monday, I do his retinal peel Tuesday and Friday nights. My skin looks AMAZING but I also know that hydration is even more important so I use an oil every night, I used rich products day and night. For makeup, I use Bobbi Browns' Extra Illuminating Moisture Balm Primer and WOW, what difference it has made regarding makeup. I can even use a POWDER FOUNDATION and it looks great.

Getting older and having dry skin is a challenge but once you find the right products (and samples are a great way to do this), your skin will glow just like it did when you were much younger. HTH : )

@Tigriss I think you've got the right ideas with the moisterizer. I used to have really oily skin too, but now that I'm older my skin has changed. I exfoliate every night (some lighter, some stronger), but I would never imagine not using a good moisturizer in the morning after I cleanse. I even add a light layer of JM's Argan oil on top. I hate liquid foundations, so I've continued to use a light layer of either IT Celebration Illumination powder or Laura Geller's Balance and Brighten. I do use a spot concealer under the foundation. If you're using a liquid or creme foundation, then you should probably drop the powder altogether. I've had to continue updating my routine on a regular basis as I've aged. It ain't easy keeping up!

I use a cloth cleaner/wipe in the mornings as it isn't as harsh as a regular cleaner and not wearing makeup everyday has made a difference as well, but I guess I just failed to really update my makeup since my skin and hair has changed. I can actually have day two or three hair and not have to wash every night. That makes my red hair color last longer. I have liked that. I am afraid that once winter does set in down here, and I start to use heat in the house my skin will probably get dryer too! I make sure to drink plenty of water during the day/night, so I am doing that right. I guess that I will need to go shopping for some new skin products! I do know in the past the retinal creams make my eczema worse, so may skip that until I get the rest sorted. I do like the idea of a peel/microdermabrasion. Thanks for the wisdom ladies!

I hear ya! I am still struggling to find makeup that I am happy with! And this time of the year is the worst. The transition from summer to fall and winter is killer on my skin. Also, putting the heating on. My skin gets kind of red, cranky and will not behave at all. It takes me a good month or 2 before it really settles down. I hope you find your makeup. Just wanted to commiserate. I am getting ready to go to Ulta as soon as I have a bit of time to spare and see if they can offer some suggestions.

I forgot to mention a product I like to use on my dry skin, especially when it gets a little flaky after using Retin-A for a few days. I use these muslin cloths made by ecotools. You get two and they are made with a blend of organic cotton and bamboo which has been found to be naturally anti-bacterial. The logo tag on these cloths serves as a convenient hanging loop. These cloths are very effective and you really don't need to use them everyday...they are that good at removing stuff. There is a simple technique to follow when using cloths like this so I recommend looking for a video by Eve Lom (her brand of cloth 'Eve Lom') to show you how. You do not want to scrub back and forth with these cloths. Wipe in one direction only, using a single layer of cloth...not folded. With continued use, my skin is so clean, flake free and feels like glass...no chemicals, no grit.

ecotools Muslin Cloths - around $4 to $7, (iHerb has lowest price)

Sometimes I apply her translucent powder or setting powder that is so finely milled you don't know you are wearing powder. What has helped my skin tremendously is Pop Sonic's Leaflet that I bought at QVC. It cleaned out my pores the first couple of days and then settled down. After I cleanse my skin, I dry off and apply Josie's Argan Milk (LOVE this product). Sometimes I will take a drop of Marula oil and rub in my hands and pat on my face. I only layer 2 products no more. I usually just use the Argan Milk and you don't need much. I love the way it feels on my skin. My skin is normal now. I use to have a little dryness in the winter but with my skincare regimen, I no longer have that problem. I am in my mid 60's.

It was drilled into my head from my teenage years that if you don't moisturize, that's when wrinkles form. I always use moisturizer - day and night. In the morning after showering, I make sure to use a moisturizer on my face that contains a sunscreen (either Perricone or Josie Maran) and then my regular makeup follows. Primers don't work for me so I just apply the SPF moisturizer and then my liquid makeup and then the rest.

My skin is dry and I never skip a moisturizer. In fact I use my serum, an oil (currently using Perlier Almond), moisturizer and then a SPF. I always used a primer but a makeup artist told me that the primer is a waste of money. She said that's for people who have bad skin to smooth it out. I thought that she was nuts but decided to try my foundation without a primer. It stayed on all day without fading. Make sure that you let each layer dry. Also let your foundation set for about 5 minutes before applying blush and powder. BTW I do set mine with a setting spray and a light dusting of powder. My setting spray right now that I like is Urban Decay Chill. Great for dry skin.
