The Products? or Pretty Packaging?

I noticed all the pretty pallettes in the stores and pictured on these threads. Makes me wonder.......... are you attracted by the pretty packages or the actual product inside?

I'm guilty - I used to buy any cosmetic or skin care in a lovely bottle or fancy pallette. I didn't know much about what was inside, but if I loved the bottle, I bought it. I'm still drawn to the makeup and skin care aisles because of pretty colors and packages. It's a "girl" thing, I guess.

How about you? Do you think you're drawn in by pretty packaging? (especially now with all the Holiday sets) Or the quality of the products?

That is an interesting observation. A lot of marketing goes into the packaging of a product to catch your eye. I'd say most of us are guilty of indulging because it's pretty.......now that I'm thinking about it I think I'll be more selective!!

I don't mean to offend you, @tototwo, but you (or the former you) are exactly the potential customer who these companies are marketing to. Remember the saying, "Pretty faces are a dime a dozen"? For me, it's like that with skincare and cosmetics. Anyone can put something in a pretty case or bottle and the contents could still be junk. I can't say I've never been drawn to something because of the packaging, but nowadays as I've learned more about ingredients and how some bigger companies operate I'm more about the contents and the pretty packaging doesn't matter.

Not such much nowadays, but when I was younger I was a real sucker for the Avon perfume bottles. The ones that were shaped like cars, animals, etc. I still have a couple of those old bottles on my dresser with the majority of the perfume still in the bottle.

I could care less about packaging. I'm all about quality and what works on my skin. For me it's the same as a pretty face doesn't necessarily mean a nice person.

I've never cared about pretty packaging - just how well it works and what is in it! I look more closely at a product that's presented on any of the shopping channels and the vendor states they don't waste money on fancy packaging. Even if a product is great, the packaging adds extra to the cost.

Even when I was younger, I was never particularly drawn to packaging.

Years ago I worked at an Ad agency and took college courses in advertising, so packaging certainly was a topic of interest.

I would rather that the product perform! Remember the line in Gone with the Wind: "just a mule in hoss harness."

I do not want pretty packaging that I PAY FOR and that I just throw away... Drop the price of your goods and send my item in a plain package, nothing fancy.

I am allergic to many of the usual skin care ingredients, so pretty packaging is not even on my radar. Any time I hear raves about a product, the first thing I have to do is check the ingredients.

My skin has a mind of its own. Very annoying.

@tototwo What an interesting question. For me, I know that packaging definitely plays a part in what catches my eye, whether I'm shopping at Ulta or Sephora or QVC. But I think in the end, its the product that matters.

I want sturdy packaging, pretty is also good. I want something that is a good value ,and that means it won't break apart after a few uses. I'd rather buy something expensive that will last, even if it initially costs more

Both. If I am buying for myself it's the product first. If it is a gift and there is holiday wrapping that will attract me first but in the end it all depends on what's in the package.

Most of the products I own are in plain packaging. The palettes that suck me in are the eyeshadow palettes with shadow colors that I'm drawn to. Then I ask myself if I think I will actually use those colors, and if I already have colors similar. Price is also a big factor, and whether or not the reviews on a product are good.

It's not that I don't appreciate pretty packaging, I just find that most of the products in my price range that I'm interested in don't have pretty packaging. On the rare occasion that something does, that's just a bonus.

I agree, eyeshadow palettes do me in. I almost caved on a few recently but then thought about the colors and what I already have. I could recreate most of them but still I dont really use the colors.Palettes are so pretty to look at.

The packaging does attract me but in the end it is the product and the pricing that will may me buy it.
