HELP Needed!! Hair Spray Buildup.

I have some bad hair spray buildup on my hair!! I have tried vinegar, baking soda, vinegar and soda together, Suave Clairfying shampoo.

It has NOT helped 100%. The soda and vinegar together then shampooing after helped them most but not all of the buildup is gone.

Is there anything else to TRY?

Is there a way to avoid the buildup? I have to use some hairspray on my fine hair.

try this. it is recommended for once a week,then use your regular shampoo other days. If you have a really bad buildup I would try it a couple of days to get your hair totally clean, then do the once per week.

@CherryHugs, Try using a thickening product for your hair that is water soluble. You won't need the hair spray. It will thicken your hair and is does not build up. I use Aquage thickening spray gel. It comes out as a mist. You would have to play with it to see how much you need. For build up I always used apple cider vinegar & water and massage into the hair then rinse with clear water.

I used mousse and hair spray every single day I worked, so Neutrogena was in my shower stall until I retired. It's a great product.

Every couple months I put shampoo in my hair and then while it’s sudsy I will open a room temperature beer and use it in my hair. I just massage it through my and leave it set for a few minutes. It makes my hair feel so soft.

I use Ion Clarifying Shampoo once a week. Sally Beauty supply sells it. It is safe for color treated hair. It really works great and doesn't leave my hair feeling stripped or dry. My hair is so soft, bouncy and shiny after using it!

Can't help you with removing buildup, but I CAN help ....

Please STOP using whatever kwap you are using and start using L'Oreal Elnett Hair Spray. Tall skinny gold can, best price around is about $12 at Walmart. You can spray with it day after day after day ..... and when you need to comb your hair at the end of the day, it's very easy to do.

Yes, it may seem a bit pricey, but it's worth every penny and a can lasts me (fine hair) almost 6 months with daily use. It has an ultrafine mist, which I think helps a lot, but the formula is superb. One of the versions also has sunscreen in it.

Sometimes you can find the smaller 2.2 oz size, but don't count on it. Get the 11 ounce can and never worry about build up going forward. I'll bet you never use anything else ever again! It's really that good.

How many days do you go between shampoos to accumulate that much buildup? I would suggest washing your hair more frequently.

Not sure you tried this yet. But I apply apple cider vinegar Bragg, Mother (found on the shelf in grocery stores) or the one that says organic. Pour it over your hair - don't rinse yet - wrap your hair in a towel for about 10 to 15 minutes and then wash it out.

Maybe DUH on me, but I don't understand how you can still have hair spray in your hair after shampooing? And not just after shampooing but on top of that the other concoctions you've used.

That must be some hairspray you're using that soap and water won't remove it.

What kind of hairspray are you using?

I use mousse and hairspray everyday and I never have a problem of build-up and I never use a clarifying shampoo or anything other than my normal shampoo. I wash my hair every other day generally.

If the build-up is that bad I would think maybe you need to try something different or not use so much.

Here's an oldie but goodie that works for me to remove product build-up: Vo5 Hot Oil Treatment. I use it once a week in the shower. I don't even warm it up before applying, seems to cut the buildup. I would be careful using vinegar and baking soda if you have color treaed hair.

Never having heard of such a thing I just googled it. This is supposed to be the cure:

2 Tablespoons of shampoo in a bowl, add 1 Teaspoon of baking soda. Supposedly the baking soda breaks down the hairspray buildup thus allowing the shampoo to wash away the broken down hairspray.

I wash my hair every other day. I use a lot of product in my very fine short hair in order for it to look decent and not flop down. Yes, I have product build-up and use a clarifying shampoo weekly. It does the trick for me.

LOL, great tip! Seriously, I don't use an excessive amount of product and wash my hair every day. I do think products build up on my hair over time, so I benefit from using a clarifying shampoo once a week.

WOW thanks SO much everyone that posted suggestions and advice.

The Baking Soda/Vinegar did help alot yesterday. I didnt leave it on though, just ran it thru my hair then rinsed before washing my hair.

With Soda/Vinegar I was afraid of it Drying my Hair alot.

The Shampoo's, Thickening Spray, Hairspray you that is suggested

are things I will try for sure. Not all at once LOL

What happened was this:

The shampoo was not taking the hairspray build up off my hair when I washed it. So each time I washed it, some was still there. Then I would use hairspray again on my hair for 2-3 days after styling it. I was using Aussie Volume hairspray that seemed to cause this?? Plus i guess I was way over spraying!

I wash my hair every 2 to 3 days. It is very fine and thin so it really isnt dirty or bad by day 3

The Suave claifying may be too cheap? It didnt work on its own at all.

Try Dawn Dish Soap. If it wont harm baby ducks it wont harm your hair. Or try leaving the shampoo on your hair for several minutes and then rinse, shampoo again and rinse, rinse, rinse. Use a good leave in conditioner. If you continue to use hair spray, use a good clarifying shampoo once every week or two.
