Good morning,

I've spent a few hours this weekend (so hot outside!) reading through posts on this community. You guys have to be some of the most informed/educated shoppers I have ever run across in my life. The knowledge is very impressive, and as a "new poster" from a long time ago I really do appreciate it.

I searched this morning for a thread on foundations under $50 and nothing came up so hopefully I am not duplicating a post. I recently turned 50, and find myself needing to wear foundation (particularly at work). I've never been much of a foundation person; in fact the last I wore was "Clinique's Pore Minimizer" and it was water based and made for oily skin. My skin is not oily any more, so that's out.

I was trying to find something on QVC to try, but there are so many options and I feel really out of the loop. Can anyone recommend a good one? I need to cover some age spots and imperfections, but I can't stand the feeling of heavy foundation (particulary during hot flashes ). My skin tone is medium to medium tan, and dry (other than the nose area).

thanks in advance!

Fifty eight needs changed with age..own and enjoy two different foundations. Both are powder, Everyday love!! Smashbox Halo. Easy peasy. Spot conceal with Tarte shape and tape in key areas. Light hand applying Halo-less is more. Primer Smashbox photo finish and Smashbox hydrating water primer. Live in Florida, Primer makes the experience wearing makeup enjoyable. Next foundation Wanderlust Powder, Love this when I want full coverage. Sponge comes within the compact awesome. Suggested this here and several ladies love and feedback on the powder excellent. HSN offers Smashbox with free shipping and flex pay. Key! Imo with age preparing face is the most important. Good skin care such as Smart Profile Clarisonic helped immensely. Hope this helps. Good luck! Remember makeup should be fun and simple.🙋

Catchersmom, I am really liking the It Cosmetics CC Cream/Foundation. After all the hype and the fact that I couldn't find a drugstore foundation that I really liked, I thought I'd give this a try. I purchased the travel size for $15 on the It Cosmetics website.

They only had light and tan for the shade selection. I really needed the medium or medium-tan. So, I purchased the tan and it came with nice size samples of the CC cream in medium, the 50 primer and the cream foundation in a compact in medium.

I used the tan foundation and was hooked immediately. It was a tad too dark but I could get a feel for the coverage, how it felt on my skin and its lasting ability. I tried the medium cc cream sample (at least 4 uses out of it) and it was a perfect match with a light dusting of bronzer over it. The medium-tan would probably be the perfect match right now since I do have some color from this summer. I would say the coverage is medium at best. It blurred my hyperpigmentation but didn't cover it completely which was okay with me. I want my skin to look like skin and not a mask of makeup. I'm not sure how they completely cover skin imperfections like they show on tv but it didn't do that for my skin.

I did try the cream foundation in a compact sample (very generous sample with easily 10+ uses in it). This foundation felt a bit oily on my skin so I definitely needed a finishing powder to top it off. As the day wore on, the oiliness was very evident. I had to keep applying powder over it. Plus, the coverage wasn't quite the same. I prefer the cc cream foundation. IMO this would be a good option for dry skin. My skin is pretty much combo with an oily t zone but will get dry come winter.

The 50 primer was heavenly but I really didn't need it with either foundation. I tried both with and without primer and the primer didn't do anything extra. Maybe with another foundation it would perform.

I was using the Tarte Amazonian Foundation and BE foundation prior to trying this along with several drugstore foundations. I am going to wait and see what It has coming up at the end of this week for specials since they will be on. I will definitely purchase the full size cc cream foundation.

I am 64, and can't stand that heavy , turning orange stuff ,this Born This Way feels like nothing on and is buildable, a little goes a long way.

I do like the idea of powder! I'm in the SouthEast too, so maybe the primer is something I need to look into. Reading up on your suggestions now; it's very appreciated!

HSN and I had a bit of a falling out five years ago. I have my packages delivered to work (live in a condo and we have problems with "package thieves" if delivery happens when not at home)--anyway, they had a shopper that worked somewhere in my office building that they had problems with and blocked the entire office address from ordering. I tried a few times over the years to get that straightened out, but the follow up was a hassle and I just decided to stop ordering from them. The whole thing finally got worked out this year, and they gave me $50 spendable cash to make up for it .

lol now I might have something to spend it on!

thanks again!

@catchersmom, If $50 is your magic price number step to the Laura Mercier counter. Her foundations are FABULOUS! I have always been one to own several foundations (for the different needs of my skin and occasion). Over the years, I have bought foundations from every brand you can and been very pleased with many. However, for the past year nothing has satisfied me more than Laura Mercier foundations. All of them are $48

I am in love with Smooth Finish Fluide. It's feels weightless on the skin -- even in heat and humidity. The finish is rather matte, but not flat. As with all Mericer foundations, the colors are realistic skintone looking. I also like her Candleglow (liquid) and Smooth Finish Powder Foundations very much. Candleglow is a bit heavier the Smooth Fluide, but still sheer-to-medium coverage. It has a finished glow to it, but not frosty shimmer and shine. Her powder foundation can look however you apply it. Brushed on for a light dusting or using a sponge or more product with the brush a more intense finish.

My non Mercier recommendations would include:

Lancome's Teint Idol Ultra ($47)

Estee Lauder Double Wear Light ($42)

Smashbox Studio Skin ($42)

Laura Geller Double Take Baked Foundation ($36)

Maybelline Fit-Me Dewy & Smooth (less than $10)

They color matched me at Sephora. No more buying foundation off the TV! The color never matched me perfectly until I went to Sephora because they only offer a few shades on TV. This foundation is light and feels like nothing is on. I think the IT CC cream feels heavier than the MUF foundation.

Are you interested in a powder? I like the Lancôme Dual Finish foundation (retails for $39.50). It is not as heavy feeling on the face the way maybe a liquid foundation is.

But as far as liquids, I do like Urban Decay Naked Skin foundation (retails for $40) or Lancôme Teint Idole (retails for $47.00). Try to go to an Ulta, Sephora or a Macy's which has a Lancôme counter or an Impulse group of cosmetics which has an Urban Decay. Ask the salesperson for a take home sample or two. Remember fluorescent lighting can change how a foundation looks on you vs. natural sunlight. Also some foundations can oxidize on your face over time during the day. Take these things into account when finding a foundation.

Another thing to take into account is a tan during the summer so you might need a darker shaded foundation.

It is definitely a learning curve finding your Holy Grail foundation. Good luck.

@catchersmomMy favorite is "Make-Up Forever" that I buy at Sephora. Love this liquid foundation and it stays put all day. Sephora has a machine to match your skin tone.

Now for powder foundation, I love and have used for years "Jane Iredale".

@catchersmom wrote:

@catchersmom, A few years ago I was in Ulta and a sales girl showed me a new foundation by IT Cosmetics. I was not a QVC shopper at that point but was really impressed with the product. Now I use their new Confidence in a Compact, I get compliments on my skin and makeup all the time and won't use anything else. It definitely covers any flaws without looking "made up". Hope this helps!

Covergirl Auquasmooth. You can find in most drugstores, Walmart, etc, runs between 8 and $10 depending where you buy it. Has a sponge- type applicator, goes easy, evenly and gives a nice smooth, flawless appearance. Ive been using for years and never look to any other because it works for me.
