Shaving under arms

I never use to have a problem with shaving, but now when I shave under my arms I get some ingrown hairs and it hurts. I have always just shaved with a Bic razor. Is there something else that is going to prevent the ingrown hairs and be more gentle? I worry that the Nair type hair removal products will be too hash and irritating. That might be worse. I only have to shave maybe once a month anymore.

I don't know if an epilator would solve that problem with ingrown hairs ot not.

Epilating the armpits does cause some discomfort but it's not unbearable. I'm in the process of using a MeChic Permanent Hair Reduction Device. Keeping my fingers crossed for good results by the end of August.

I do not know if it is true but I was always told to use a separate razor for shaving under arms do to the residue on the skin from deo. dulling the blades faster. The dull blades can cause irritation and in-grown hairs.

Get an electric razor. I have the Panosonic electric razor for women for my peach fuzz on my face. It is gentle and there are no batteries rather you charge it from time to time. Believe it or not, I no longer have hair under my arms nor on my legs. It stopped growing when I was around 60, if I remember correctly.

@Katcat1Good advice I no longer have hair under my arms but mine climbed up to my chin

Make sure your razor isn't starting to get dull, maybe change more often. You can find many electric razors now that do a great job. You don't have to spend too much to get one that works well.

@SeaMaidenBefore you shave, use a hot washcloth to warm the area. Make sure you shave in the direction of the hair. If you don't, that can cause ingrown hairs.

I don't shave my underarms (or anything for that matter); rather I get waxed. When I have the rare ingrown I use PFB Vanish roll-on. It makes that stubborn little hair pop right out, then I tweeze it. That stuff works great!

@SeaMaiden - I use the Emjoi for my legs, and it has made a real difference! But for my underarm area I use a Venus disposable sensitive skin razor recommended for the bikini line (I also use it there.). It works well, and I don't have a problem with ingrown hair. I did when I used an electric razor on the underarm area.

If you're still having trouble, I know they have topical ointments you can apply after shaving to prevent them. I've never tried any of these.

I give that area a good buffing with a loofah > shaving. No problem.

@SisterGoldenHair 's idea of a warm cloth sounds good too. I'd combine the two.

Ugh I am 63 and still have to shave daily/every other day for my underarm hair! I don't think that'll ever stop growing! My leg hair has subsided but certainly not my underarms!

I know this is odd - esp. since I am part Italian heritage, but I have never had any hair under my arms.Not a single one. I have never shaved there. Very fortunate for me.

I went to the derm for the first time and they look at you all over with a magnifying glass - she was kinda amazed by this. She thought I'd had lazer or electrolysis.

Thanks for all the great suggestions everyone!. I will first try the Venus shaver and see if that makes a difference over the cheap razors I have been using. Then I will try some of the other suggestions if that does not work. Thanks again!
