Fake Makeup?

The local news did a promo for an up coming news show on fake makeup. Looks like brands you buy online but wonder why they are so cheap.So I googled fake makeup.I found a bunch really cheap. The news talked about the consumer not knowing what harmful ingrients can be in it. I know lots of other things are dupes but never thought about makeup. What do you think?

Oh Cwap! It's time to read all ingredients on make up and compare to the real deal, huh?

I know that the Paul Mitchell hair products I use have a disclaimer on the bottles saying that if not purchased from a licensed salon, it may be counterfeit, out of date, etc. I have seen the shampoo at TJ Maxx, but now pass it by.

I would not touch with a 10 foot pole! If you don't know the ingredients that is pretty scary if you are putting on your face.

Fake makeup is a huge deal. Mac Makeup I know has been sold a lot. On line & by street vendors. Totally fake!

I know the ingredients in the makeup I have. OP is talking about fakes...So how do I know what I purchase is the real deal unless I check each product against another of the same?

I never thought about makeup either. I guess people will do anything to try to make a quick dollar.

I have never seen any...is this stuff mainly online? And bigger cities- I saw one reply said street vendors-no telling what is in it.

I've heard of baby powder in named brand powder sold on EBay & Amazon. I did unknowingly buy a fake OPI that was a discontinued color I really wanted. It chipped, then noticed a misspelling on the back of the bottle. That's when I learned about fakes.

The early morning news shows did stories on fake makeup several years ago. Up until then, I purchased several cosmetic items on Ebay. Never again. As an example, anybody can take an empty La Mer jar and fill it with cheap hand cream and sell it as the real product for big bucks online. Good Morning America bought several Mac makeup items on Ebay and took them to a lab -- all fake with questionable ingredients. The packaging looked real enough, but it was fake too. Just be careful where you buy.

If it's too good to be believable then it probably is! I stick to buying the brands I like and want at reputable places and will pay the full price!

@Pook That's probably the smartest way to go. Yes, may pay extra money, but know what you're getting.

Our outlet mall has a makeup outlet store. I never purchased there assuming that it could be fake or old. Expiration dates can be changed.

@Shanus Are you talking about the Cosmetic Company Store (Estee Lauder) or the Lancome outlet store?

They are safe to buy from. I LOVE those stores.

They are very strict about watching the dates & pulling expired products.

My outlet mall has a general, different brands cosmetics discounted.

One of the MUA at a major dept. store told me this secret: ask for your product to be taken from one of the drawers of back stock below counter. The bottles and jars on the shelves that are under the lights (even in boxes) can be affected by the lights/heat/exposure.

This is why I don't and won't buy stuff like cosmetics and skincare from e-bay and I would even hesitate to buy from Amazon.

Heck even some of the beauty items sold on shopping channels aren't the same as what the company sells out in retail.

Yes. If it's sold out or discontinued in retail & you find it discounted anywhere....Beware!

I won't buy skincare or makeup on eBay -- not just for fear of getting a counterfeit but also fear of how old the product might be. It's just not worth it to me. And it doesn't matter how highly rated the seller is, he or she might not know the manufacturing dates. Chances are, if they being sold on eBay, they're not right out of the vat. :-)
