Shiny Face Look

I think the cosmetic industry is taking illumination too far. Some women have the whole face in a glow and it doesn't look good. I know the industry tries to come up with new products but they need to educate women on how to wear the look. I really don't like too much illumination on the cheekbones as it looks phony. If you blend it in properly it can look pretty. What do you think shiny or matte or what????

I think that the over-shiny look, as in actually greasy-looking, is not very common in real life. I never see it here where I live, and I live in SoCal.

I think if you are very young it works, but not for a mature woman.

Blend...Blend...Blend...Some of the highlighters are much too Glowy & Fake.

I think most people who like illumination are looking to beauty gurus on social media for application tips. The companies often send them the products and they do what they want with them. And I don't think the companies care how their products are used, as long as sales go up.

I've learned that I cannot use most illuminating products because of the texture problems I'm having with my skin. But I would prefer a shiny face over the patchy, dry face I have. I think most of the YouTubers I've seen who use highlighting products do pretty well with them, and I wish I could use them, but I don't have the skin for it.

I think too much is oily looking and glare producing.

It has to be subtly done and blended. Some of the hosts on QVC look ridiculous to me and they have lovely skin without it.

Sometimes I think stylists are slaves to trends.

At 65 I use it very sparingly, especially on cheekbones and inside corner of eyes.

I think in general young girls are going overboard on their makeup. I think the trend now is to look too costumy - bright bold colors on eyes, bright cheeks and lips - I think they look so much better more natural.

After I do the little makeup I do, I use a little finishing powder in t zone. My blush is cream blush (BB Pot Rouge). I mix a tiny bit on the end of my finger w/ a tiny bit of NARS illumination stick (a silvery color called Casablanca) & apply lightly to cheeks and there's just a slight nuance of shine.

If you don't like the mega watt face look, no worries. I'm sure the matte look is a just a season away...have to keep us purchasing products, right?

I've spent my whole life trying to achieve and keep a matte finish on my face. I can't adjust to the idea that now I'm supposed to look like I need to powder my nose. I don't like this new trend at all.

I've had reason to be on Michigan Avenue in Chicago quite a bit the past couple of months. I purposely look to see what women of all ages and ethnicities are wearing in terms of makeup. When I'm consulting, it is typically at Fortune 100 companies so we're talking large populations of employees. YouTube is not being worn in the real world is all I can say. I rarely see a wingled liner, highlighter, or false lashes.

The cosmetic companies might be pushing it, we might be buying it, but from what I see, we are not wearing it.

@Lulu Bea, I was born and raised In Chicago. I can say for most part the women are not into fashion or beauty products. You have to catch a good day to see some fashionistas and beauties. Plus, if you go on the weekends it's a lot of tourists. I worked in prestige law firms years ago and there were only a handful of women into fashion and beauty.

@Lulu Bea Where I live I see the YouTube looks on people regularly. Yesterday I went to Kroger and I couldn't believe how done-up some of the women were. And it's not like they were dressed up either...unless you count leggings and yoga pants. They were just in there grocery shopping with their kids. At my last job, there were girls who would come in with a full face that must've taken an hour or so to do.

My sister lives in the D.C. area, and it's definitely a different look. Subdued and professional. I don't think I saw anyone there who had vivid eyeshadow, false lashes or winged liner. I haven't been there for awhile, but I suspect it hasn't changed.

Shiny and illuminating are two different things. I'm not familiar with this "shiny" look that you're referring to. The harder we try to achieve a natural look by applying makeup, the less you will look natural.

If you notice something it is overdone. I think you should look healthy and attractive overall. I don't like the greasy look. It makes me want grab a wipe.

I think this illumination craze came about w/ print photography, also in film with strategic lighting.

A touch of illumination in the right places suits me. I don't know what the "older" matte ladies are thinking! All matte can make a skin look older quicker than anything! Just study a young child's or teen's complexion.

I agree, @Katcat1, some take things way too far and so take what could be pretty out of the concept.

It's the "Instagram Look". Strobing and contouring all over the place. You can also add a an instagram filter or use the adjustments on Instagram to enhance your look.

All these heavy-handed bronzers and illuminators..... some women look like they're trying to be Morticia for Halloween!

As someone with very oily skin, I've battled with a greasy face all my life. I much prefer matte, especially now that I'm in my 60's. To me, the "dewy" look is greasy. The "illumination" look should be saved for Halloween. But that's just me....
