Facial seborrheic dermatitis

I've been dealing with flaking skin on my forehead, nose, and chin area for about 6 months or so. I'm pretty sure that it's seborrheic dermatitis as washing my face with shampoo that contains zinc pyrithione works. But dandruff shampoo with this ingredient irritates my eyes a lot so I stopped using it. I am also using Canesten cream on my face afterwards.

So when I was in Las Vegas I was in the CVS pharmacy and saw that they had a bar of soap for this skin condition so I bought it and brought it back home. It's the CVS house brand Skin + Pharmacy soap and I paid about $8 U.S. They have it online as it's not carried in all the CVS drugstores. I think it works well too but I still have to be careful not to get the soap in my eyes as it can sting.

Here's the drug info from the Drugs.com website:

https://www.drugs.com/otc/591230/advanced-seborrheic-dermatitis-therapy.html

So I'm still using the Canesten cream afterwards too and so far my skin has cleared up. I used to have oily skin and dealt with acne from the teen years to my mid 40s but after menopause my skin became more normalized. I don't think my skin exfoliates very well on its own. But given how sensitive my skin has become I decided that microdermablading isn't for me as it just seems to set up a cycle of flakes and then I exfoliate and it comes back even worse. I don't have a problem with my scalp and I don't have itching at all so I don't want to wash my face with shampoo.

These types of zinc pyrithione bar soaps and creams are not available in Canada, only the liquid shampoos so I will buy some more soap either online or on my next visit to the U.S.

Isn't this sometimes related to candidia? If my flora balance is off (from eating a bunch of sugar or from a round of antibiotics) I occasionally get a mild case in the corners of my mouth, on my scalp, or hairline at the back of my head.

What works for me like gangbusters is ketoconazole shampoo, Nizoral. Gone in a day or two. You could try the Nizoral briefly on the face and then use something soothing right after.

Just noticed you said you don't want to wash your face with shampoo. Understandable. But once the seb derm is gone, there's no need to keep treating it. Just avoid the things that led up to it and retreat if necessary. I don't mind washing my face or neck with this shampoo for a few days once or twice a year. Definitely overkill if I did that every day though!

They do have Nizoral in Canada so I will keep that in mind. I may try some facial oils too as I do have some oil cleansers.

I'm not sure if I am having a yeast or fungal skin problem but I figure that whatever it is I am going to try both the zinc pyrithione soap and the anti-fungal cream. I find when I skip washing my face at night that I tend to see flakes in the morning or later on, so I think I need to be vigilant right now. I am keeping it under control so far but right now I think I need to use these twice a day.

Azelaic acid is used for rosacea which is papular (like cysts). The skin on my face is smooth almost like scales. It reacts funny to everything. I'd like to use anti-aging, etc, but right now it is not possible : (

I second that you should see a dermatologist. I was diagnosed with seborrheic dermatitis and prescribed 2 creams for my face and a mousse for my hair. He also advised that stress, fatigue and illness can trigger it. There is no cure, but the antifungal and cortisone creams help. I only use the creams when I have a flare up, which is rare now days and usually goes away within a day of using the medication. I was having major flaking and peeling around my nose, behind my ears and along my hairline when it was at its worst. A proper diagnosis and treatment plan will hopefully resolve your issues quickly. Best of luck.
