Wearing an SPF hands down is the best thing you can do for your skin since the sun is maybe the biggest ager of skin. Using a chemical exfoliant, gentle enough to use daily and a Retinol has made a big difference in my skin. Also, vitamin C, which I don't use daily but do use a few days a week. Purchased the Paula's Choice skin care book, it helped me a lot in understanding how skin care works. At one time Paula had a lot of videos up on Skin care which were excellent unfortunately for some reason they decided to remove many of the videos when they redid their Youtube channel. which is a shame because they were very educational. Visit some dermatologist blogs as well there are derm doctors out there with great blogs on skincare, what works and doesn't work. Most skincare products don't work though and beware of the more expensive brands & so called natural products especially. They rarely don't work, are in open jars (rendering them useless after a few days of opening) low quality & irritating ingredients. More expensive and natural doesn't equate better.

Sure, there are lots of things that really make a difference, and there are plenty of articles published in science and medical journals to prove just that. SPF, Retinol, acids, etc. Also, injectibles and plastic surgery work.

Honestly, if you don't have a routine and use things consistently, you won't see nearly the difference than when you do. So I think the best place to start is finding a routine that you'll actually do and go from there. Products can't help if they only sit on the shelf and don't make it to your skin!

I mix and match brands and I've had very good results.

It depends on what issue is being treated. For me this is what I have seen with my skin care routine:

- fine lines and wrinkles, 6 weeks

-hyperpigmentation, 3 months at best, had to see a derm

-pore size, 2-3 months

I think as a whole, give it 3 months and no less than 6 weeks.

But I have to admit that before all of this skin care stuff, I did kinda cheat and had some laser tightening done on my face, eyes and neck. It wasn't until then that I started taking care of my skin more seriously.

I'm not trying to brag, just making a point that practices do make a difference and it's not all in the genes.

Easy answer.. Just use Paulas CHoice and for your skin type and make sure you use the 1% retinol and Vit C in morning and Resist line. I have seen a tremendous difference in my skin and at late 50's have beautiful skin and no wrinkles. Make sure you start off slow with the Retinol and build up to everyother day or every day and use with oil or moisturizer or serum if you are senstive.

Good genes make a difference.
Loving, supportive, safe, secure childhood makes a difference.
Things that work from the inside out, like good food, sufficient sleep, aerobic exercise, and well developed coping skills makes a difference.
But tubs and pots of the latest potions, dabbed and smeared to the surface is of limited lasting value.

The only exception is SPF. This I saw with my own eyes.
I had a patient who was described by his Dr as, "the biggest collection of birth defects I've ever seen together in one place".
Due to his condition, the patient had lived his 60+ years without direct exposure to sunlight. Ever. EVER.
His skin was the skin of a two year old. Smooth, soft, tight, and completely un-lined.

Botox and fillers are not something I can or will be able to do so topical products that work are crucial. Genetics play a role and I wear spf 50 every day no matter what.

So far, so good. I try many products but I'm ALWAYS using products that offer specific benefits even though it may be a different brand every few days (samples).

No,I don't think cremes and serums make much difference. Keeping skin moisturized helps. Staying out of the sun,all things we all know. I dont believe all the hype about any product. And I'm not letting anyone near my face with a scalpel. I'll live with the face in the mirror.

Perhaps we should celebrate the fact that we are getting older and cherish the experience and wisdom we have attained.

I can totally understand and appreciate celebrating getting older. However, I do not agree that preventing sun damage has little effect on aging skin. Sun damage equates to aging skin. Genetics do play a part as well. At least this is what I learned in school anyway.

@SilleeMee, I think that you may have misunderstood @reiki604's post. I had to read it a couple time to figure out what she meant (no offense meant...:-))

I'm pretty sure that she meant that aside from surgery, fillers, preventing sun damage, and genetics, there is little else that will have an effect on aging skin.
