It has been years since I have used a toner. I stopped using one because I noticed there was no difference when I did use one.

I decided to start investing more time in skin care and saw all the stars-read reviews-and bought it.

So, here is my confusion. In reading reviews, it sounds as if some apply it using a cotton ball, but one said you need very little-that 3 or 4 drops would suffice.... It's a big bottle, but I hate waste....any comments?

This morning I will be using it for the first time. I am doing a NuFace treatment first....

Thanks for opinions,

Poodlepet2

You can apply this emulsion any way you want. Use a cotton pad or shake a few drops into your palm, rub your palms together and pat on your face. Easy!

I use a travel sized plastic spray bottle to spritz on a similar type of emulsion from Missha. If the Raw Sauce is watery enough, this may be a good solution.

I love Missha Time Revolution First Essence but would love to hear your thoughts about the Raw Sauce after you've used it for a while.

Raw Sauce is not a toner. It is an essence. As I understand it, an essence is a very lightweight serum. Great product!

I thought there was something going on with the word "essence"-but "toner" was also used in the product description.

What is an essence?

@River Song, I am glad I found you-I think! I believe you and Happy Daze were discussing Korean skin care. From the basis of your conversation, I ordered the Misha BB....shade 21 is light and I can't use it alone, but with foundation, wow! It really softens lines! I bought the shade 23 also: interestingly, it has totally different packaging. It goes on this funky shade of grey but recalibrated to a more natural tone, but I still can't wear it alone. No problem: the immediate benefits are amazing.

Misha is not something I have ever read about...tell me about products you are using.

Thanks,

Poodlepet2

I use Tatcha Essence after cleansing whch is a serum w skin benifits, its very hydrating & gives such a smooth finish.. I put about 3 or 4 drops in my palm & pat it on my face. Basically an Essence does make whatever skin products you use such as serums, moisturizers penatrate more deeply into your skin. I use Thayers's Rose toner sometimes with a cotton round to take off makeup that may be missed with a cleanser. I also love Rose Petal Water Spray. as another hydrating product! PS For me, I find using an essence has made my skin much more normal than normal/dry. I have been using it for about 5 months, first getting a travel size.

A Korean essence is neither a toner or serum, but a category, if you will, of its own. A toner typically removes any residual dirt or cleanser left behind and it will also restore the skin's pH after cleansing. With advances in skincare and better cleansing, a toner isn't really a must have nowadays. A serum is a more concentrated product (they're called ampoules in Asian skincare). An essence has a watery consistency like a toner, and has beneficial ingredients, but is intended as a skin softening agent that will allow follow-up products to penetrate the skin better/deeper.

I just use my fingers to apply so as to not waste any on a cotton ball. But one thing I was disappointed about was the scent. I much prefer no scent for my face. I probably won't rebuy.

Ladiest that use essences- where do you fit this in in terms of your skincare regime? In particular I am wondering if you use something like Paula's Choice 2%BHA first after cleansing, would you use this after the BHA? Before?

I've heard great things about the Missha one for many years now and almost bit the bullet about 5 years ago but never did. I see my favorite Amazon Missha seller sells it along with the Missha BB creams I like, and for much cheaper than Missha's site. Who knows, maybe one day I will try it. Just not sure I want to add an additional step to my routine and not sure I need it at this point. But it always intrigues me!

No problem: the immediate benefits are amazing.

Misha is not something I have ever read about...tell me about products you are using.

Thanks,

Poodlepet2

Well, I'm no expert on Korean skincare products, that's for sure, lol! Other posts have explained that Korean toners are not the same as Western toners, Korean toners are watery moisturizing products.

However, the definitions of Korean toners and essences seems to change depending on the brand, sometimes they're used interchangeably and sometimes they are completely different products within the same brand. I purchased three Missha products from my local Bed, Bath & Beyond store (of all places) but they are not available on BBB's website. The products I have are: MISA Geum Sul First Essence Booster (has a clear brown serum-like consistency) ; MISA Geum Sul Milky Emulsion (a white serum-like consistency); and, MISA Geum Sul Rejuvenating Essence (a thin white cream). All three of these products come in pump bottles and are floral fragranced. You can read about these products on the Missha website. I like the first two products because they are thin serums but the Essence is too moisturizing for my face during the summer so that goes on my neck/chest.

Which one goes on first? This seems to change with the brand. For the three Missha products above, you apply the essence booster first, then toner, then essence, then emulsion, then cream. Whew, that's a lot of different products. But you only use a tiny bit of each product, you don't slather it on and you don't wait between products, you just apply tiny amounts of them one after the other. So, this is completely different from the Western process of just slapping on a moisturizer and you're done, lol.

I purchased a couple of other products from iherb (they have quite a selection of K-Beauty items): Mizon Multifunction Formula All in One Snail Repair Cream and the Mizon Snail Repair Intensive Ampoule (both in a dark brown glass jar or bottle with dropper). The Cream is a white gel-cream. The Ampoule is a serum and neither product has a fragrance. Both products are great for healing up skin scrapes but I prefer to use them at night (too moisturizing for day for me). I also purchased the Missha Time Revolution The First Treatment Essence, cheaper at iherb than at my local Super Target, and really like it. A great first step for dry skin but can also work as a very lightweight moisturizer for oily skin. I just ran out of the Missha essence and am trying Mad Hippie Hydrating Nutrient Mist for a change and like it just as well although it has a completely different ingredient deck.

In April, some CVS stores will start to carry Korean beauty products but they haven't shown up yet in my area. Alicia Yoon of Peach & Lily, a Korean beauty e-retailer, has curated a selection of Korean beauty products to be carried in CVS stores, along with Peach & Lily's retail concept, Peach Slices. I'm really hoping that a CVS store in my area will carry the K-beauty products so I can try more stuff.

I don't think any of the K-beauty 'toners' are meant to be applied with a cotton pad. They're more like soomthing, hydrating and balancing essences to be splashed on or pressed in directly with your palm.

I ordered Raw Sauce after reading so many rave reviews and didn't find it all that amazing. What impressed me way more is the Whamissa Organic Flowers Deep Rich Essence Toner - it's superb in comparison. Glowrecipe carries it among other Korean beauty sites.

Thank you all for the great advice!

I tried it for the first time yesterday-and it's amazing: fine lines disappeared and deeper lines lessened. I used it-no other serum because I wanted to see if it "pilled" when I applied foundation.

I did use moisturizer and applied my MU.

Today I am trying it with my PTR glycolic to see how it works. I have not had pilling with PTR, but I want to see how it works....

I love it, and I am predicting a cult following!

Poodlepet2
