When Should Toner Be Used On The Hair?

I just got back from having my hair highlighted/lowlighted. I've had this done for many, many years.

Went to a new hairdresser today and she put a toner on my hair and charged me an additional $25 for doing so.

Why would she do that and no one else ever did? Does that mean she messed it up?

The color looks okay, but certainly not worth an extra $25.

Thoughts?

@Sunshine Kate - it's possible the highlights didn't lift enough and ended up looking brassy. The toner takes out that brassy, orangey color to get a better looking result.

@Sunshine Kate. Last year when my hair was highlighted, it bleached out too light. My stylist then applied a toner to "tone it down", make it less blonde or take away any brassiness, but I was never charged extra for that.

If she's your regular hairstylist, I'd ask about why she had to use toner and also why that charge was passed on to you.

Could be a double process ... first they lighten the hair, and then toner. When I had my hair highlighted years ago - that was the method they used.

I always use a toner after I wash my hair. My hair is highlighted very light blonde and if I didn't use a toner it would get brassy & very dull. I think $25 is a bit much. I've only paid $5 at the most at a salon. The toner keeps your color from oxidizing. I use Roux Fanci-full Toner #52 White Minx. This can be purchased at Sally's. It comes in several colors.

$20-$25 is the going rate around here for toner. Only a few stylists have wanted to add toner after my highlights. IMO if the highlighting is done properly, toner isn't needed--at least in my experience.

When the hair is lightened, color is removed. A toner is just a name for another color that is applied over the lightened hair to add a color. The color is mixed with peroxide and applied. The material used would be the same as if you just got your hair colored without the lightening first.

Toners can tone down colors that are too brassy or red, or add a different shade. Often they are not needed. They are often used if you have a ton of different colors in your hair from previous highlight visits.

If you feel that you do not need a toner, ask her to not use one next time.
