Do you throw away make up once they pass their expiration dates?

Hi, Beauties,

I am going through my big stash of makeup and I am having a hard time trying to throw away expired items. I have never ever "hit pan" on any of my eye shadow pallets. And many of them indicted that they expire after 12 months of opening. Do you throw away your powder makeup once they reach their expiration dates? If you don't, how long do you keep it pass the date?

Heavens no, especially powder products. I think this is all a conspiracy to sell more product. I've had exactly two items go "bad" in my entire life, a Bare Escentuals lipstick and a foundation from Mary Kay. You can just tell, smell if there is bacterial contamination, or the consistency will change. I think the lipstick developed a white coating.

I've never seen and expiration date on any make-up. Some lipsticks that I seldom wear have changed smell and texture.

What do you have an expiration date on? Just curious!

I throw away mascaras, eye shadows, and eye liners a lot, sometimes a couple of weeks after purchase. Some of those probably sat on the shelf at the drugstore for a while before I purchased because they seemed to dry out quickly even though I closed tightly after use. Because I wear contacts that can easily get irritated, I am more likely to throw out eye products sooner than the rest.

@momoftwo2007, I have not seen expiration dates on any of my makeup. I have some eyeshadow that is over 5 years old. It does not smell and it's still good. Lipstick - I will toss if it smells funny and you know by the smell; mascara I toss every 3 months. If it doesn't smell, I keep it. You can smell it and look at it and tell if it's bad. I wish it was mandatory that makeup and skincare have an expiration dates. The cosmetic industery wants you to buy new products so I don't understand why they don't supply expiration dates.

@wildcat fan, Even though products sit on shelves at drugstores, etc., they are not open. Once you open then the expiration begins which may be a year or so. I never had problems with old eyeshadow and I have it for over 5 years. I wore it the other day - no problem. It's like sour milk, you can smell bad makeup. IMO

On makeup it's an international box with a number inside it and the letter M for month. This box with an open lid is seen on the outside packaging of the makeup, not on the tube itself.

I do throw away some things regularly - mostly eye products like Mascara, but after I've had somethng for a while I definitely check the smell. I do date tubes of mascara and if one has been open for 90 days it has to go. I have had several lipsticks from various vendors get gloopy and smelly, and they go out at once. I don't worry so much about powders, etc. But I'm only getting two eyes and I definitely want fresh eye products.

For most makeup an expiration date is just an excuse to get you to throw it away so you have to buy more.

No. I throw stuff away when it smells off, when it changes color, when it doesn't perform the way it use to, when it simply doesn't look the way it did when it was new.

You now when something is "done" and needs to be tossed even if you've only used it a few times OR whenever it's simply gone bad.

Powders last longer than liquids and it depends on whether or not they are organic. But generally I toss most products once they've been opened for three years or more, excluding mascara and liquid eyeliners which I toss after three months. For me it's not all about the possible bacterial contamination but rather performance and color retention. Some color cosmetics will oxidize over time and they change color. Others will degrade on a molecular level leaving them inferior as far as performance.

I also change mascaras every three months (with the change of the seasons so I don't forget). As far as other items, I use them until they look or smell bad. I think almost everything shows an expiration date now, but I use my own judgment. If you rotate several brands, you can't possibly use all of an item by the expiration date.

I have eye shadows that have a little picutre of the container that says 12M which means that they expire after 12 months of opening.

Wow, thank you, ladies! I know I can trust your expertise! I think I'll do what some of you suggested and continue to use my eye shadow pallets until they change in smell, texture, or performance.

No the only thing I have gone bad was JM oil and a vit c serum.

What I dont get and I have taken courses in microbiology, a mascara when opened and used one time is contaminated, germs would start grow day 1 not wait a blanket 90 days to multiply.

I think makeup and skin care are made in clean but not sterile conditions.

I throw out mascara after 3 months, I don't use eyeliner but if I did, I wouldn't keep it longer than 3 months either. I clean my makeup brushes and I clean out makeup regularly, I do not keep it laying around. I do think lipstick and foundation can go bad and have thrown tubes away when I notice a change in texture or smell.

Powders, eyeshadows and blush more than likely have a longer shelf life but I do not keep makeup forever. I usually purge yearly:-)

Moisturizers, creams...guilty as charged! Have way to many on hand but I am focused on using these up. My plan is using them on my feet, hands and body until they are gone!

No. But.....I live in a very arid climate, and some of the stuff just dries up way before any expiration date.

I haven't used eyeshadow in years, so I tossed all my eyeshadows last summer. I am one who will not use a mascara or a lipstick if it has that "weird" smell to it. I tossed an expensive lipstick just last week, because it had a smell to it.

I work at not have my a lot of different makeup items sitting around (I don't have a large stash and never buy several of one thing on sale) & rarely need to wonder if they have expired. If sketches My goes bad it gets tossed but items I use regularly don't go bad.

Powders R's tend to keep for a very light no time. Things like liquid makeup, creamy shadows, etc. go bad more quickly.

I can't remember ever looking for an expiration date on products to determine if I should toss or keep. It is pretty easy to tell if products are good or not.
