ComPact 2016 -- NOVEMBER

The ComPact is a commitment to simplify, pare down, streamline. It began as a way to gain some control over our collections of beauty products. Why were we amassing so much, yet not using what we were buying? Why were we always searching for the next new product? Why couldn't we just find what worked for us and stick with it?

The ComPact, however, is not restricted to beauty items. If you have a collection you want to address, do it here. Choose an area you want to work on, and track your progress on the ComPact thread. Members will offer tips and encouragement.

Choose one of our many mantras (“One by one until they’re done!” “We are SPAHHHRRRTAN!!!” “Not until you really have to.” “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” “Resist the propaganda.” "If it's high, I don't buy!" “When in doubt, do without!” “Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can.” “Shoplighters of the World Unite!”) or create a new one and share it. Target items each month to toss, donate, or use, and post your “chopping block” -- or “hit list.” Post temptations, post victories.

They say it takes 30 days for something to become a habit: Let's see if taking the ComPact one month at a time works for you.

Hey, all you HEPcats and HEPdogs! We had discussed making the Healthy Eating thread a monthly jam session, so I just went ahead and did a little improvisation.

This is an invite to our crazy crib where you can come and break it down! I say we go 18 karat on this and really swing. If healthy eating’s not your bag, no problem. But if it is, I dig.

I couldn't help myself: I had to count the leftover candy bars this morning. We started out with Snickers, regular and crispy; Twix; 3 Musketeers; M&M's plain. peanut and crispy; Milky Way; Skittles and Starburst. I have 115 left, which means we gave away 41. And that doesn't mean 41 kids, either. That was the worst turnout ever.

And what's sad is that some families walked passed the house. I wasn't that scary!

There's a thread on the other forum and one person got 350 kids. Most people are stuck with candy. A real bust.

Don't be surprised to find a ton of leftover treats when you get to work today.

I don't know, bee, you looked pretty scary to me. Burlap and flannel? How can it get any more frightening? Right out of a slasher movie, for sure. 🔪🚿🙀

As far as it being NOvember, I've blown in the 'no' part of that already. I ordered extra body cream when I vowed I wouldn't, but I told myself that it was now when it's on sale or later when it costs more. And I caved with Paula's Choice and ordered a full size AHA gel after getting a sample that seems to work well--again, while the sale was on. I'm trying a cheaper substitute for her cleanser but I think I may be coming to your same conclusion that cheaper cleansers aren't necessarily a better buy in the end. I'm already finding that I use a lot more of the cheaper stuff, which isn't really cheaper that way.

Yeah, that's happened in my neighborhood too. I wonder if they were just pooped and on their way back home.

One year my brother took his kids trick-or-treating, and they had to stop in the middle and go home because my nephew threw a tantrum (he didn't like the candy he was given by someone, or the amount). Maybe that was happening with a few families.

Let's see, it was in 2014. I stumbled across the Naked matte eye shadow palette from Urban Decay one day when I went in to buy a spare little tube of eyelid primer. I have finally just about finished off the little tube of primer. Nowhere near done with the eye shadows, though, and I like both products very much. I'm working up to reporting that I bought a new eye shadow palette that I've been drooling over for a year. Pushed a few buttons on the Nordstrom site and boom! A whole lot of dought flew out of my account.

As retribution, I went theough my much diminished box of makeup. I've been though it several times, and still, I found about ten things to toss. Too old, too many, too tired of it. First I got everything into that one box, and now the box is looking decidedly empty. I've found wha works in every category, and only have a collection of lipsticks. Because, really, a girl needs some colors, right?

Then I cam here to make sure you were still here, and got reminded to put the NO back in November. Good advice! Thanks! Nothing more for me this month. @just bee, I put that Alegria catalog in the recycling. I think I have enough shoes for the rest of my life, if I don't overstay.

I did some creative accounting this month: I paid the bulk of my November bills on October 31. That means I'm one week into the month and I haven't spent any money. Haven't really left the house, either, other than for work and dog walking. Said no to the NM Philharmonic's Viva Italia! concert and I continue to delete sale emails.

But I have incentive to stay cheap: My car insurance and property taxes are due this month.

There are probably a dozen pairs of Alegrias on sale that I would consider owning. But there will always be pairs that catch my eye. My mistake was buying pairs that were on sale because they were on sale. I liked the design but wasn't head-over-heels. I've since had to say no to pairs I've really loved. Watch those impulse purchases.

Another reason to just say no: Better-half's mother is coming to visit this month. As hosts, that will mean $$$$.

And it's definitely a challenge this time of year. I opened a Walgreens email and there was a set of nail polishes for ten bucks. Cute little bottles, beautiful colors. It was like looking at the Spiegel Christmas catalog when I was a kid. Then I had to have that conversation with myself: Bee, do you even wear nail polish? Of course not. When you've had nail polish, did you use it? Of course not. How many bottles have you purchased and thrown away? Too many. So why are you looking at nail polish and not shredding junk mail?

An aside:

I'd mentioned on another thread that the rain delay during Game 7 of the World Series was not a rain delay -- it was divine intervention. There was plenty of intervention that night because we had a tech filling in who had the game on his iPad/MacBook/whatever and there was a period in which we had no new patients. I was actually able to see the Cubs win.

But the Cubs who were interviewed said that during the rain delay right fielder Jason Heyward rallied the team. I suggested the team had also sacrificed a small animal in the clubhouse.

Ironically, I walked past the neighbor's house yesterday with the dog -- the house that has the Cubs banner -- and we saw entrails in their driveway.

Cubs fans gone pagan? Nay. We have an owl in the neighborhood. I saw it in my yard Thursday morning. It seems to be spending a lot of time there because the bird feeders haven't been touched in a few days.

(Speaking of Game 7, Better-half added time to the DVR so I'd be able to watch the whole thing on my day off. Ran over 100% on the DVR and I lost several films I'd been saving. Worth it. What an amazing game!)

Reviewing our ballots one last time today because we're voting tomorrow. (I'm taking a vacation day.)

I keep worrying that the lines will be long and we won't be able to vote. Then I have to remind myself: There are only 2 million people in the state and 550,000 in Albuquerque. How many of the 550,000 will be voting? Sure, we've had some dogs register to vote in the state and I'm certain there will be plenty of corpses, but I think we'll be able to beat the rush.

Have any of you noticed that many of the companies you support have redesigned their websites and have asked you to change your passwords? I don't mind changing my passwords since I recently generated a bunch of new ones to choose from. But the new websites are just terrible!

I'm especially annoyed with my tea company's new site. Hard to navigate and cluttered with useless ____. Now they have a loyalty program. I can earn points. I don't care about points. I want a sale and/or free shipping before I run out of tea.

There are pairs I purchased early on that I look at now and wonder what I was thinking. And those are the ones I should be wearing because if they wear out I won't care. I'm getting ready to retire my red patent leather clogs because the leather's starting to crack. It's the second pair of red patents I've worn to death.

Just came home from walking the dog and soon we'll head out to vote. I've filled in every circle on my sample ballot but one. I was going to start a thread on the other forum ("It's Election Day: What are you drinking?"), but I figured it would disappear pretty quickly.

Still have one circle to fill in... and it'll probably happen just before I hand over my ballot.
