Before going to bed, cover them in Vaseline (get a big tub) and then put on washable inexpensive gloves (because you will never fully get the Vaseline washed out - so you can toss them periodically and get new ones when you need it). The gloves keep the Vaseline from getting all over the place AND it makes the hands & Vaseline warmer, which seems to help the softening & absorption process. I do this with my feet, too – using cotton socks or footies. Nothing works better and it is very inexpensive. It is amazing! And I have tried nearly every product out there.

My sister is having a really hard time finding something to help her dry, cracking hands. I would appreciate some suggestions. She said she's tried a ton of products, including the stuff in the short green tub (Working Hands???). She's added oils to lotions, worn gloves to bed on top of whatever product she's trying and nothing is helping. Any suggestions for her?

Before she goes to bed, she could try slathering her hands in vaseline & then putting light-weight gloves on.

If that doesn't work I don't know what will.

P.S. There is also zinc oxide ointment.

Try Cerave creme (not the lotion, but the creme.) I just came home from 3 weeks in the hospital and my skin was dry and flaking everywhere. The creme is really good. My dermatologist recommended it and a friend of mine who goes to a different dermatologist said her doctor also recommend this creme. Price is between $12 and $14 a jar and the jar goes far. Hopefully this will help - it sure did help me although my skin wasn't cracking just flaky. Has she seen a dermatologist? That would be a good step to take if the creme doesn't help.

Sometimes a change in diet will help more than anything. Drink more water, get some good fat (flax oil, avocados, etc.) and in general watch your diet.

I find that my feet are dry if I am eating poorly--even for a few days.

Dry, cracked hands and feet are a sign of low vitamin C levels. Eat more food rich in C to start with and in the meantime use a good aha hand cream.

If she's a smoker then vitamin C levels are low. Smokers need C supplementation...coming from a former-smoker myself.

There is Eucerin healing oinment. It's a thick oinment in a tube. I've tried it myself, and it works!

Also..my 100 lb Lab, had dried, cracked elbows that would bleed, and I bought him the Always brand of eucerin from Walmart, and he no longer has cracked or bleeding elbows. It was basically from his weight laying on his front elbows. They are so soft now. I would start your sisters hands twice a day, then hopefully once at night will do.

All the suggestions should help repair dry/cracked hands but she needs to look at the CAUSE. Are her hands in water a lot, does she do a lot of dirty work? I buy the very thin food-handlers gloves that come 500 to a box (not latex but clear plastic) and use them EVERY time I am going to have my hands in water cleaning, dirty work, etc. (I buy at COSTCO.)

They are not heavy duty, so when I do have heavy duty work, I put on two pairs. The beauty of these is you throw them away after you've worn them. I will even put a heavy duty cream before I even put these plastic gloves on while I'm working. This has solved my chronic chapped cracked hands.

If she isn't doing a lot of this kind of work, then she has a health problem to solve.

Here's what I use and it has helped me:

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair cream. You can use it all over your body as well as your hands. I use this on my hands and feet daily. It also lasts thru a few hand washings so you don't have to reapply constantly.

Josie Maran's Argon balm. I use this on my lips and my knuckles. They really get bad with gardening or cleaning.

Josie Maran's hand cream as a treat to me. Its wonderful but pricey. I'll use this at bedtime if I have it.

Hope you get the same good results as I do.

P.S.- If you can only pick one --then I suggest the First Air Ultra Repair cream.

@Bhvbum- she has two dogs and washes her hands frequently during the day after doing stuff with them.

I have occasional bouts of dry skin that actually peels. When I have a flare up my hands can feel like a terrible sunburn. I have had numerous diagnoses from different doctors, different prescriptions, wear gloves...don't wear gloves at night, etc. What I have found that works best is the Bigelow brand medicated hand cream from Bath and Body Works. It is pricey and smells bad, but is the ONLY thing that has worked for me. When I do not have issues, I used the First Aid Ultra Repair Cream several times a day.
