Women who do makeup on the train are "Ugly to see"

So apparently there is a new campaign in Tokyo that is saying that women who apply their makeup on the train are ugly to see.

"Women are beautiful, but sometimes ugly to see."

This cannot be serious? So now we can't even apply makeup without being criticized?? insanity.

I know that traditional etiquette says that a woman should not apply makeup in public—although The Queen unapologetically applies lipstick in public after a banquette!—but I don't like the tone of that ad. As a once-busy working woman on the road, dashing here and there, missing planes, running to meetings, etc., I know there were times when I had no choice but to grab a minute or two when I could -- on a plane, on a train, in an airport waiting lounge -- to quickly check my makeup and make quick corrections. I was glad my mother couldn't see me, though, because she is a stickler for etiquette!

Women are criticized for everything these days, and what makes me furious is when other women pile on. You hardly ever hear men go after each other the way we do. You are too fat, too thin, hair is wrong color, you dress too young or too old and dowdy. This just scratches the surface of the sometimes impossible standard that women are held to. Rant over, because I would hate to be called opinionated or strident.

pretty woman, but don't like to see how she gets her pretty face on. they'd rather not be privy to the behind the scenes effort. 😊

I would not say it is ugly, but I take public transportation into work and I see this often. There was a women who was sitting next to me and I had on a pair of black slacks and she was putting on foundation. She was using bare mineral and the powder was flying all over my black pants. Needless to say I had to let her know, she apologized and continued to use it, she just postioned herself so the foundation would not get on my clothes. I would never apply makeup on public transportation, but that is just me.

What that woman did was totally rude!! Sounds like this woman needs a course in time management. I get to work at 5am. I take my shower and I have more than enough time to apply my makeup at home. I'm sure this woman has the time also, but just won't use it.

My thought? Get up earlier and do your makeup at home. Reminds me how women used to use nail polish on the plane. You could smell it rows ahead. I used to commute a half hour in San Diego on the highway in the 80's and I always seemed to see the same guy driving his BMW in and out of traffic while brushing his teeth. He finally got a ticket.

I've never understood why women can't just wake up early enough in the morning to get fully dressed, make-up, hair and all, before leaving for work. Pure laziness in my opinion.

Women and men should do their morning routine at home before they leave their house. There is nothing wrong with checking your makeup and putting on lipstick later in the day though.

i used to drive to work and often would see a man dressed in a suit and tie with an electric razor going full blast accross his face while he was driving 60 mph. I was behind him every morning it seemed. I wondered if he had whiskers all over his white shirt and suit when he got out of his car.

Oh goodness! Where did you ever see this? I have never had to watch something do this...ever.

This would be dangerous to do on a train and gross in public.

Why don't they get up earlier? Maybe they work late. Or study late. Or had a sick child. Or overslept. Or are just too freakin' tired to get up an hour earlier to do anything.

I totally understand where you're coming from, and you handled it appropriately. And I totally understand what etiquette says on this matter. I've been in that situation with other women and I also have cheated once in a while and had to touch up my own makeup, as I said in an earlier post. When I see someone doing that much make up on a train or plane, I often think, aha, that's a busy mom who probably got the kids off to school and and lots of other things done and this is the first chance she had to do herself. That's why in my earlier post I said that sometimes we women are all running around and we're so busy that we have to grab a minute when we can to do what we have to do.

I totally agree! I used to commute into NYC, and I had my makeup on before I left home. Then again, I have a pretty simple routine. But, I can relate to the women who do their makeup on the train! The NY Transit Authority used to run ads saying "Train time is your time" and it's so true! Some commutes are an hour or longer. And days are LONG... I'd leave home at 7:10 am, and was lucky to get back home by 7:30 pm. You need to be productive on the train.

I also want to say, that if you're running late, for whatever reason, you really don't have a choice..... If I had to choose between doing makeup on the train or missing the train, it's a real no-brainer.

I find the ad in Japan to be ridiculous and offensive. I do also agree that care has to be taken not to get makeup on other riders.

I don't think they mean that the women are ugly, just that they find the act of applying makeup is unattractive.

I like to watch women put on their makeup, find it fascinating but maybe public transportation is not the place for it.

All I can think of are all of the bacteria that could get into your makeup by opening it and using it in a place where thousands of people and their germs have been.
